Chapter 14: Her Allowance

Everything seemed to finally rest.

Bard and Carla got what they wanted. They took care of the little headache they served on a platter in front of themselves. They successfully took the necklace they had given away to Isabella under the veil of the dark.

The very next day after the incident, Bard had instructed the kitchen to cook a few more dishes for breakfast. He happily hummed as he sat at the dining table, grinning to himself as if he couldn’t contain the pride he took in himself for another successful plan.

On the other hand, Carla was similarly in a good mood. She wore a bit more makeup than usual. Nonetheless, she was a better actor than her husband.

The only one who did not share the same sentiments was their daughter.

Lost in her thoughts, Vanessa idly looked at her phone with an irritated look on her face, as if something was eating her inside, but she was unable to speak of it.

Isabella ignored all of them, keeping a tiny smile on her lips.

Soon, the food was served, and everyone was ready to choose and pick their preferred meal.

The meal was over in silence. Though it wasn’t as uncomfortable as the one a few days ago.

This time, no one had burst out in anger or placated another. No one accused anyone of taking what was theirs.

Suddenly, Bard clapped his hand as if the crescendo of an opera truly impressed him.

He looked at his wife, his daughter, and finally, at Isabella.

"Dear, why don’t you hand it to them already?" he asked with glee.

Carla sighed, but a smile was on her lips. "You just can’t wait, can you?"

Before her words had even fully come out of her mouth, she produced two jewelry boxes. One was handed to Isabella and the other to Vanessa.

Seeing the boxes in front of them, the girls were slightly shocked, widening their eyes.

Vanessa was truly shocked by her parents’ actions. She wondered what was going on inside their minds. Did they buy another set of jewelry?

Naturally, Isabella also played her part, surprised coloring her face even though she was already informed of this.

"That is..." her words trailed.

"It’s unfortunate you lost the necklace we gave you. But let’s move on from that tragedy." Carla kindly offered advice that she truly thinks was effective. "Here, take it. We bought a matching bracelets for our two little girls."

Soon after her words fell, Isabella took the box and opened it. A silver bracelet with several diamonds shimmering instantly revealed itself in front of her.

It was a beautiful piece, albeit smaller and less expensive than the necklace. Isabella really liked its appearance. It wasn’t flashy or big. She could wear it underneath her sleeves.

"What the..." Suddenly, Vanessa put her spoon and fork down a little too violently. "Lost? You lost the necklace?!"

Her voice started to grow louder and louder as her words progressed. Her jaw was slack with shock, and her eyes were wide in anger.

She probably couldn’t believe how benevolent her parents had suddenly become. Were they replaced? Were they hypnotized?

Please, just someone, tell her why her parents didn’t shout and scold Isabella for losing such a beautiful and priceless necklace!

Whatever was in her head, however, her parents did not hear it. They only turned their heads at her, frowning in disapproval of her lack of decency in the time of their meal and a happy occasion.

"Is this really mine?" Isabella said, as if Vanessa hadn’t said a word. When she received a nod from Bard, she beamed and thanked them.

"It’s good that you’re happy, Isabella. If you have anything you want, just tell me or your aunt, and we’ll try to give it to you."

Will you please get out of my parents’ house and leave my inheritance alone?

The intense urge to spout the words that appeared in Isabella’s mind quickly formed before she forced it down.

Not now.

Not yet.

She can’t let her mask crack now.

"Thank you, Uncle Bard. I’ll think of something later," she said vaguely with a smile. She took the box with the bracelet and dragged the feet of the chair backward as she stood up.

"I still have to meet with some of my classmates later."

Her uncle and his wife did not stop Isabella from leaving. They didn’t even question who her friends were.

Once the dining room only had the family of three, Vanessa finally couldn’t hold herself back from demanding answers from her parents.

Being questioned by their daughter, Carla calmly comforted her. "Sweetie, it’s fine. We just gave her a new and cheap bracelet. Although you two both matched, yours is much more expensive. I made sure of that."

"You know that’s not what I was talking about!"

Bard took a grim look, shooting his daughter a glare. "Impudent! You dare shout at your mother?"

Carla shook her head at her husband, stopping him from scolding their daughter. Then, she looked at the remaining maids and had them all leave. Once they were gone, she rubbed her daughter’s head with utmost care.

"Sweetie, come closer. Let me tell you something." Carla beckoned with a wave of her hand.

Vanessa was skeptical, but followed and listened to what her mother had to say.

Her mother’s words were soft and low, barely a whisper, but the meaning of her words brought tremendous shock to her heart.

After her mother pulled away, Vanessa still couldn’t get rid of her shock. Then, like a child finally pacified, a dumb smile appeared on her lips.

All the injustice and unfairness she felt over her parents’ indulgence toward Isabella was finally wiped away. A sinister grin was plastered on her lips.

"Are you for real?" she finally asked.

Her mother nodded. "Yes, we already had someone go and return it."

"Why return it?" Vanessa frowned.

The necklace was something she had been waiting for. If she had it in her hands, wouldn’t it solve everything?

"Naturally, to cancel the transaction," Carla explained. "Your father needs the money the most. He has to invest in the new company he created. We can’t waste that on a necklace."

Vanessa had heard of her father’s new company. It was the one he had established without the influence of the Harrington family, who disallowed anyone from using the family and company’s funds to create their own path.

Even now, the other members of the Harrington family didn’t know about that new company.

Still, this did not make sense.

A thought flashed into her mind, and Vanessa exclaimed, "You used Isabella’s inheritance money to buy the necklace?"

From what she remembered, due to the restrictions of the inheritance rights and conditions, no one in the Harrington family was able to withdraw anything from it.

However, Isabella was different.

Although a condition was also set for her, as the sole inheritor, an annual allowance would be given to her.

Every year, she would be given a huge sum of 5 million dollars.
