The Billionaire Can't Escape His Shameless Heiress Wife!-Chapter 24: Tricking One’s Mind (2)
"Hmph! You’re taking me for a fool, aren’t you?"
Isabella was completely astonished after hearing that.
She originally thought Vanessa would burst out in anger and storm outside to look for her father. But who would have expected that she would calm down.
This simply shocked her.
As the living room was vacant of the maids, the words they exchanged were heard by no one but themselves.
"Oh? Why would you think that?" Isabella became curious how Vanessa had come to that conclusion.
Vanessa, feeling proud of finding the missing piece to the puzzle, sneered. "You think I don’t know you like him?"
Isabella’s fingers moved ever so slightly.
Had she been seen when she went to the store earlier?
But she made sure no one followed her.
Besides, how would Vanessa know she liked Kaelian when she never got to see them together?
Then, could it be that Vanessa followed her herself and saw what happened at the store?
That might be the closest answer she could think of. Using Rebecca’s name might be a screen to trick her into spilling the truth.
But then again, Isabella turned down that conclusion.
Because Vanessa’s next words would steal away every word she was forming in her head.
"You’re crazy over him. You lingered where he’s always around. You talked to him. And you even met him alone." Vanessa rambled on as she became spirited while thinking she got Isabella busted from her plans. "You want him just as much as I do. But too bad, he chose me over you!"
The more she spoke, the more Isabella became perplexed.
Because what Vanessa had said was indeed true.
She was crazy about Kaelian.
She lingered where he was around, staying far from where he couldn’t see her.
She had finally talked to Kaelian.
And met him at the store.
Though they weren’t alone, it was the closest thing to being alone with him for her.
Anxiety arose inside her. She didn’t want the Harrington family to find out about her feelings for Kaelian. She didn’t want them to take advantage of her feelings to harm him.
But thankfully—
Thankfully, Vanessa was an idiot.
Isabella was sure Vanessa did not like Kaelian.
Besides, Kaelian would never choose someone like Vanessa.
If he did... Isabella would’ve been so disappointed.
Relief washed over her when she realized Vanessa hadn’t seen through her.
Isabella wanted to laugh.
But on a second thought... This might have been a much better outcome?
Isabella wasn’t scared that Vanessa would tell her uncle she didn’t go to the book club meeting.
Whether the engagement failed or not, Isabella had her ways to make sure the marriage could never happen.
Of course, she had always been indifferent about the engagement. If Vanessa had rushed to her uncle to demand a marriage with Edward, Isabella wouldn’t stop her, either.
All in all, she didn’t really care about whatever Vanessa did or anyone did.
Vanessa’s sudden assumption that she liked Edward, however, became a surprise.
In an instant, Isabella could hear Vanessa’s gears turning and knew what she was thinking about.
How deplorable. Do you really think I’d be so desperate for a man like Edward?
It was laughable that Vanessa would even think that she was trying to deceive her.
Still, Isabella knew how to take advantage of this.
"You think he likes you?" Isabella jabbed back. "Vanessa, he will never choose you."
Kaelian would never do that. Isabella didn’t mention a name, leaving Vanessa on her own to become even more creative in her inner narratives.
As expected, Vanessa’s nostrils flared and her face flushed. "You’re wrong. He already did. You think that time was the only time we did it behind your back?"
Isabella did not respond. But her eyes squinted a little bit to show she was hurt.
Vanessa grinned. "We did it way back in high school. We gave each other our first and still went on until now. I even came back from his apartment earlier. What do you think he told me?"
Silence.
Isabella chose it was better to stay quiet.
However, a part of her wanted to stitch Vanessa’s mouth shut.
It wasn’t because of Edward. Isabella didn’t care about that scumbag or thought of him even for a second.
It was only because while Vanessa was talking about Edward, Isabella was thinking of Kaelian.
Whatever dirty word Vanessa was spouting, Isabella didn’t want to think it was anything Kaelian would do to anyone else.
"Edward told me he can never live without me. Even if he marries you, he’ll divorce you and throw you away!"
Vanessa spoke so fast that she forgot to breathe. When she was finally done, her chest rose and fell vigorously, looking as if she had just run a fifty-kilometer track.
On the other hand, Isabella remained calm and relaxed, not a strain was on her expression and she stayed as graceful as usual.
It’s just that people could only appreciate her innate elegance and not her appearance because of her disguise.
When silence resumed after her outburst, Isabella finally opened her lips to speak.
"And still, you would only become the second-choice," Isabella used her softest voice but her delicate look was sharp and mocking.
Vanessa recoiled in alarm. But she stubbornly refused to admit defeat.
Unwillingness welled up inside her as she thought Isabella was right about her words. Hence, she got up and said, "Don’t worry, that will never happen. I will make sure of it!"
Isabella glanced at her nonchalantly as she walked away.
Her fingertips knocked soundlessly on her top her knees as Vanessa rushed off somewhere.
Carla arrived just in time and was about to greet her daughter when the latter bumped against her shoulder.
Rather than apologize and sweetly call to her mother, Vanessa left with gloomier expression on her face.
Coming inside the mansion and seeing Isabella standing in the living room, Carla decided to ask her about what happened to her daughter.
"What’s wrong with her?"
Isabella shrugged and smiled. "I don’t know. She must have received an important call."
