The Billionaire Can't Escape His Shameless Heiress Wife!-Chapter 25: Playing the Oriole
Carla didn’t think much about her daughter’s strange mood.
Vanessa has always been like that. No one could predict what she was thinking. Even as her mother, Carla, found her daughter a handful.
On normal days, Carla could ignore such bad behavior from Vanessa. But after a long day outside and being scolded by her husband, she found Vanessa’s sudden tantrums really annoying.
Who was she doing all this for?
If it weren’t for the fact that she wanted to keep her daughter’s name clean, would she sacrifice the necklace?
If she hadn’t been worried about letting Vanessa debut grandly to the higher society, would she have used up her husband’s credit card to buy her a necklace?
When she thought back about it again, all of this wouldn’t have happened if she hadn’t spoiled her daughter.
Look, her daughter didn’t even know how to thank her, ignoring her instead of welcoming her back home like any obedient child.
The more she thought about it, the more Carla became frustrated.
"Are you okay, Aunt Carla?" Isabella asked at the foot of the staircase.
Carla turned to her and blinked.
"Ah? Why do you ask?"
Isabella hesitated, and when she saw Carla giving her a pointed look, she continued, "You just seem unhappy right now."
Carla felt as if she was being seen through. She was ashamed that she couldn’t keep her composure, but her frustration reached another level when she thought that even Isabella noticed there was something wrong with her, yet her daughter couldn’t even guess.
"It’s nothing serious, Isabella. I just feel a little bit down because I cancelled my meeting with my friends." Carla confessed, thinking it wouldn’t hurt to share this.
Anyway, her niece wouldn’t have an idea that the main reason she was feeling down was the loss of two million. She also got scolded by her husband and ignored by her daughter.
The fun meeting with her friends was even cancelled because her husband kept her from going out of the office, keeping watch on her while he kept blaming her for their losses.
"That’s unfortunate." Isabella showed a rather empathetic smile before adding, "I also didn’t get to meet my former classmates."
"Oh? Why is that?" Carla became interested.
"I was already too late for our club meeting. So, I didn’t go."
Hearing this, Carla frowned. "Where did you go then?"
"I went to the city library and spent the day there with Miss Peters," Isabella answered with a lie.
Carla knew Miss Peters. She was an old spinster whose family made a great contribution to the beginning of female education five centuries ago. Although her family wasn’t wealthy or powerful, the Peters weren’t unfamiliar with many wealthy families, as a lot of their family members have become professors and private tutors of many powerful families.
Like her family members, Bree Peters grew up with an extraordinary mind. Carla’s mother was Bree Peters’s close friend. And since Isabella liked to go to the city library, Carla requested Bree to watch over Isabella’s actions,
From what they know, Isabella spent her time reading at the city library whenever she went there. So, there was nothing wrong with this.
"Is that so? Well, it’s good that you’re working hard on your studies. Keep it up."
"Thank you, Aunt Carla."
"You’re going to be in your fourth year in college next month, right?" Carla asked, reminded that colleges would open soon.
Isabella nodded.
"Make sure to keep your grades high. It would make us look bad if you fell behind Vanessa."
"I’ll keep that in mind, Aunt Carla."
Isabella climbed the stairs slowly. And when she was finally gone, Carla quickly took out her phone and dialed a number.
A few rings sounded from her phone. Then, finally, the call connected.
Carla didn’t wait for the person to speak or greet them as she said, "Did Isabella stay inside the library today?"
There was a bit of a pause from the other side of the phone.
A few seconds later, an elderly voice replied, "That’s right. She came here."
Carla sighed in relief. She didn’t trust what Isabella told her, worrying that the latter had lied and gone elsewhere. But Bree Peters wouldn’t lie, as the old woman still had a debt to pay to her mother.
"She didn’t meet or contact anyone while she was there?" Carla routinely asked.
Bree Peters released a weary sigh. "No. She didn’t. If you’re done asking questions, can you hang up now? I still have to arrange the books in the library."
Carla also didn’t hold onto their conversation, opting to cut their call off as she got what she wanted.
Learning that Isabella hadn’t lied to her, Carla was relieved. She let the matter go and went to the kitchen to get a glass of cold juice.
But what she didn’t know was that as soon as Isabella got to the second floor, she paused by the corner as she felt her thigh vibrate.
She retrieved her phone from her pocket and unlocked it.
A new message was sent to her.
[M.P: Carla called. I made you an alibi. You do your end of the deal.]
The corner of Isabella’s lips curled slightly.
She had expected this when she mentioned Bree Peters to her aunt.
Isabella knew the old woman at the library was another mole her aunt found to watch over her. It had been three years since Bree Peters had been making up lies and covers for her in front of her aunt and uncle.
But it wasn’t for free.
Pressing her fingers across the screen, Isabella then entered ’sent’.
A notification slid across half of the screen, informing her that ten thousand dollars had been taken from her account.
By exploiting Bree’s debt, Isabella gave her an offer. Occasionally, Bree would help make an alibi for Isabella in exchange for money.
Additionally, Isabella chose Bree only because the latter wasn’t loyal or overly greedy for money.
Her aunt would never expect that the person she planted to be her eyes and ears would turn out to be a traitor.
Finished compensating Bree, Isabella locked her phone and was about to slide it inside her pockets when the screen shifted.
Another notification appeared.
[Beardie: This is the guests and items list for the auction this year. See if you want to make any changes to it.]
Isabella frowned. She had already instructed not to inform her about this again.
But as the auction house owner, Isabella still had to check it.
The auction house was one of the things her mother had left her. Over the years, Isabella hadn’t given it much attention, letting the helpers and Manager Doohan handle it.
Initially, Isabella didn’t even want to start its operation. But she soon changed her mind as it could generate a large amount of money from commissions.
Thus, she ended up reviving the auction house again.
Isabella skimmed through the list. A variety of goods were being sold, and the seller’s name and initial price were right beside them.
On another list, the guests numbered about one hundred people.
She didn’t put any importance on any of this since she wouldn’t attend the auction anyway.
But just as her eyes flitted through the names with a casual glance, a name stole her attention.
She did a double take, wondering if she had mistakenly read it.
Yet, even as she read it twice, the name remained the same.
Kaelian Veyron.
