The Billionaire Stands Up for Me-Chapter 171: I’m More Than Willing
I stared at Olivia Gray, feeling both amused and helpless.
Crocodile tears indeed.
Where was the arrogance she had when arguing with my grandmother just now?
Now, afraid of being taken away by the police, she’s playing the victim.
Of course, it might also be that she’s crying intentionally for Daniel Carter to see.
After all, she also knows that the one who tripped up the Gordon Family this time was Daniel Carter.
To escape this situation, or to lighten her sentence, she needs Daniel Carter to relent.
But she miscalculated; Daniel Carter is more principled than I am.
"You’ve brought this upon yourselves. To ignore lives for the sake of profit, it’s good the Gordon Family has fallen; otherwise, it’d be even more outrageous and lawless." Daniel Carter was unmoved, speaking with authority.
Olivia Gray stared at him, stunned, and indeed, stopped crying, becoming furious instead: "Daniel Carter, you, a junior, speak to me like this? It’s not your place to lecture me!"
"If you have no respect for old age, why not? Luckily, nothing happened to Lily’s grandmother today, or it wouldn’t be just a lecture."
With these words, Daniel Carter looked at the police, "Please, officer, take her away for an education."
Watching the police car leave, I returned my gaze to Daniel Carter, unable to suppress a smile.
Seeing this, he also curved his lips, "What is it, what are you laughing at?"
I spoke openly, "The feeling of being defended, it’s nice, I just hope I don’t get spoiled and become lawless."
"You wouldn’t." Daniel Carter said confidently, "If you were the type to easily go bad, I would never have met you."
I paused, initially not understanding what he meant.
After thinking it over carefully, I understood.
He meant that if I weren’t determined and had grown up in the Miller Family environment, I’d have been ruined long ago.
Maybe even ended up in jail.
How would there ever be a chance for him to meet me?
"That is certainly true." I became a bit conceited, smiled, then sighed and looked at him, "Since you’re here already, do you want to come up and sit for a while? My aunt is also here."
Daniel Carter looked surprised, "You mean, officially meet the family?"
"If you don’t want to, forget it."
It was indeed a bit sudden, and I guessed my grandmother and aunt weren’t prepared either.
They’d certainly be surprised to see him suddenly.
Actually, earlier this year, when I had an accident, my grandmother and aunt went to where I lived and had a brief encounter with Daniel Carter.
But it was a short meeting.
And today, coming to my grandmother’s house, it definitely had different significance.
"Who said I don’t want to?" Seeing I was backtracking, Daniel Carter quickly retorted, "I just think it’s unexpected that you’d bring it up so easily."
I bit my lip, really hesitating inside.
I also felt it was too impulsive.
We might break up at any time, and seeing the family now wasn’t really necessary.
Thinking this, I pulled him towards the car, "My grandmother just got a scare and needs rest, today really isn’t suitable for a rushed meeting, you should go back, I’ll go upstairs to accompany grandma."
Daniel Carter held my hand, "Since the elderly aren’t feeling well, I should go up and have a look. Let’s go, up we go."
With that, he held my hand, fingers interlocked, and headed towards the access control.
I became anxious, "Daniel Carter, uh... it’s too sudden, my family will be scared."
"I’m not a venomous snake or a ferocious beast, what’s there to frighten?"
He must have seen what was on my mind, so he was in a hurry to meet the family, letting both my grandmother and aunt know about us, adding an extra layer of security.
The more I thought, the more it seemed inappropriate, I kept trying to persuade him, but he only became more persistent, dragging me right inside.
Inside the elevator, seeing my worried look, he instead smiled and comforted me, "Don’t worry, I know how to win over the elders, no need to be nervous."
"Who’s nervous, I’d actually prefer they don’t find you to their liking."
This way, when I bring up breaking up, I wouldn’t have to care about too many people’s opinions.
Even though this thought seemed ungrateful, who could blame us for having so many conflicts and obstacles between us?
The elevator doors opened, and I deliberately dawdled, but he just wrapped an arm around me and pulled me out.
I had the fingerprint to unlock my grandmother’s door, so I opened it directly.
In the living room, my aunt and grandmother were sitting on the sofa.
Hearing the door open, my aunt poked her head out, "Lily’s back—"
But she didn’t finish speaking. Seeing the man behind me, my aunt’s face indeed froze, and she immediately stood up, her whole body showing unease.
"Carter Junior is here..."
"Aunt, Daniel Carter... he knew Adrian Gordon’s mother came to cause trouble, was worried I couldn’t handle it, and rushed over. Just as the police were taking Olivia Gray down, he happened to run into it, so... came up to give you New Year’s greetings by the way."
I glanced back at the man, feeling a bit awkward as I explained why he suddenly appeared.
After listening, my aunt quickly forced a smile, "Carter Junior, happy new year, come on, please have a seat!"
"Hello, aunt, wishing you a happy New Year." Daniel Carter immediately smiled and nodded, showing excellent manners.
"Thank you, thank you, please have a seat, I’ll get some tea."
As she passed by me, my aunt nudged me with her elbow and whispered, "You should have given a heads-up on WeChat!"
I: "..."
I really didn’t think about it.
Grandma stayed seated on the sofa, as she was older and couldn’t get up quickly.
But seeing Daniel Carter suddenly visit, she was also very surprised, casually polite, yet warmly.
"Carter Junior, have a seat, sorry the house is a bit messy."
Grandma’s face full of wrinkles, also full of smiles.
"Grandma, happy New Year to you, wishing you good health." Daniel Carter followed me over to grandma, continuing to greet with courtesy.
I glanced at him, feeling a mix of excitement and amusement.
"Carter Junior, what kind of tea would you like?" My aunt asked from the island over there.
"Anything is fine." he replied.
"Sit down." I tidied up the cushions on the sofa, inviting him.
Daniel Carter sat down, and aunt brought over the freshly brewed tea.
He repeatedly thanked her.
"I heard from Lily that grandma encountered some trouble here, I hurried over from the company, and didn’t bring any gifts, really impolite."
During the New Year, visiting someone’s home should indeed be with gifts, at least that’s customary etiquette.
But since the situation was sudden and Daniel Carter didn’t have time to prepare, he specially explained.
Grandma smiled, shaking her hand, "It’s alright, it’s alright. It’s more precious that you care so much for Lily and, in turn, show such concern for us elders."
It must be said, Grandma really knows how to speak, no wonder she’s a debutante from a distinguished family.
I pressed my lips together, unable to hold back a smile.
Daniel Carter glanced at me, his eyes glinting with tiny stars, naturally saying, "It’s only right for me to be good to Lily, you and aunt are Lily’s closest elders, caring for you is also right."
"Hmm, thank you for that thought, Lily is truly lucky to have met you." My aunt sincerely sighed.
After both sides finished exchanging pleasantries, I sat between them, remaining silent the entire time.
I really didn’t know what to say.
Seeing the atmosphere grow cold, becoming somewhat awkward, I immediately straightened up and found a topic: "Oh right, the police took Olivia Gray away, but I guess they’ll just educate her a bit and let her go. Grandma, you must be careful, even if she comes again, don’t let her in."
"Hmm, I understand now." Grandma nodded.
Daniel Carter looked at me and said in a low voice, "It’s best to have two people stationed downstairs just in case. At least wait until the situation with the Gordon Family is resolved before relaxing a bit."
"Huh?" I replied softly, "Isn’t that too troublesome?"
"It’s not troublesome. I’ll arrange for people."
"Isn’t that unfair, having someone sit in a car all day? It’s boring and suffocating."
Daniel Carter said, "It’s alright, it’s the bodyguards’ duty anyway."
Grandma and my aunt also hurriedly said it wasn’t necessary and not to trouble him.
But Daniel Carter insisted.
"If Grandma isn’t settled, Lily won’t be able to focus on her work. She’s quite busy and can’t rush back every time something happens, so having two people here is the best solution."
Daniel Carter looked at Grandma and my aunt, slowly convincing them.
I thought about the criminal penalty facing the Gordon Family; there’s no guarantee they won’t do something desperate.
Grandma is old and not in good health. If anyone from the Gordon Family pushes against her, there’s no assurance something unexpected won’t happen.
"Hmm, for safety’s sake, let’s do as you say. However, I’ll cover the cost of the bodyguards. Don’t argue with me over this. I know you don’t care about the money, but it’s a matter of principle."
He’s good to me, protecting me, which should be expected.
But he doesn’t have to protect my whole family too.
So, he finds the people, and I pay. That’s the most reasonable.
Daniel Carter knew my temper and helplessly smiled, "Alright, you pay. I’ll arrange for the people to come over now."
"Okay."
Daniel made a call, and quickly had everything arranged.
But he also received a call; there was an urgent matter at the company requiring his attention, so he had to go back.
"Lily, quickly go see Carter Junior off; don’t let him miss important matters." My aunt immediately urged me to escort him downstairs.
It was obvious my aunt was indeed nervous and restrained in front of Daniel Carter.
"Okay, I’ll see him downstairs and be back later to have dinner at home."
"Alright." My aunt immediately looked at Daniel, politely asking, "Carter Junior, when will you finish your work? Will you have time to come over for a simple dinner tonight?"
"I—"
Daniel Carter was about to speak when I pinched his waist, "Auntie, he has to go home. He was abroad with me for so many days, now he’s back, he needs to spend time with his family. We can arrange it another time."
Daniel Carter looked at me, a bit helpless.
I didn’t care!
My aunt was obviously just being polite, but I knew, with his temperament, he’d take it as a sincere invite.
"That’s true, work is so busy, time with family is limited, during New Year it’s right to spend more time with them."
"Mmm, I’ll take him downstairs then." I pushed Daniel Carter towards the door.
Daniel Carter turned back to say goodbye to Grandma and my aunt again on his way out.
Once outside, as we entered the elevator, he looked at me, aggrieved, "Why not let me stay for dinner? Did I embarrass you?"
I pursed my lips and gave him a sidelong glance, "You’ve already said your family is against us being together, and now you’re here having dinner at my grandma’s; what will they think? They’ll think I’m intentionally opposing them, deliberately clinging to you."
"You’re overthinking. They won’t find out."
"That’s not necessarily true."
The grand Carter Family, what can’t they find out?
His vehicle alone, every one has been specially modified and equipped with real-time tracking.
So wherever he goes every day, the Carter Family would definitely know.
But these are things I don’t want to say, understanding them in my heart is enough.
"I feel like Grandma and Auntie are quite warm towards me; they surely won’t oppose us, right?" Daniel Carter looked at me, a bit smug in his words.
I raised my head to look at him, gave a perfunctory smile, "Yes, they’re very warm towards you! Who could oppose Second Master Carter, after all?"
"That’s quite sarcastic."
I sighed inwardly, uncertain about the future; no promises could be made at this moment.
Accompanying him downstairs, and seeing him off to his car, I couldn’t help but thank him: "No matter what, you came right away and arranged for bodyguards to protect, I’m very grateful to you."
Daniel Carter was already in the car, and upon hearing this, he turned with a serious face, "Why are you being polite with me? It’s unsettling."
I gave a small laugh, "Don’t overthink, I’m just purely thankful."
"Mmm." He acknowledged, then beckoned me with his hand.
"What?"
He straightforwardly extended an arm, grabbed the back of my neck, pulling my upper body into his embrace, giving me a firm kiss.
"You’re really... broad daylight—" I panicked, pulling back and looking around.
Daniel Carter closed the car door, rolled down the window and instructed, "Come home early tonight, I’ll wait for you."
"Go? Go where?" I widened my eyes.
"Where do you think? Of course, my place."
I was shocked, how could I?
"No need, I already took all my things home, and going to your place—"
Before I could finish, he reiterated, "I’ll wait for you," stepped on the gas, and drove away.
I stared at the back of his car, feeling peevish on my own.
When I went back upstairs, upon entering the door, my aunt immediately grabbed me to ask, "You two... seem to have a good relationship, has his family approved?"
I took a deep breath, casually said, "How is that possible... His family has picked a marriage partner for him."
Grandma’s face changed upon hearing that, "Then what kind of relationship are you having? Just fooling around?"
"He’s trying to reason with his family, but now with the problem the Gordon Family has, given my relationship with them, his grandfather probably thinks... the influence isn’t good."
My aunt sat down, sighing, "Indeed, we do have quite a lot of troubles here, and with his conditions, he can marry any kind of girl he wants."
Grandma said with some regret, "This Carter Junior is truly outstanding, faultless in every way, and you can see he’s genuinely fond of you. If you two could make it, I would be completely at ease."
I was slicing fruit for Grandma, and hearing her words, I just smiled, "Don’t worry about me. Even if I never marry in this life, I won’t mistreat myself."
"But if you can have a partner who shares warmth and cold, it’d be more complete," my aunt persuaded.
I didn’t say anything, thinking to myself I hope so too.
But alas, what of these matters could I control?
That evening, I had dinner at Grandma’s.
Leaving Grandma’s, I saw the two bodyguards sitting in the car, one listening to music through earphones, the other with eyes closed resting, so I went over specifically to greet them and express my thanks.
Upon returning to Daniel Carter’s car, thinking about the tracking device, my mind twisted indifferently, driving back directly to my place.
But unexpectedly, just after parking, I noticed a familiar figure getting out of the black sedan next to mine.
I was stunned, feeling like I was the "rabbit" that got trapped by the tree.
