Chapter 30: Dear Friend

Evelyn’s breath hitched at his response, the sensation of his kiss igniting every nerve in her body. Zevian cupped her face, deepening the kiss further, their lips clashing in a battle for dominance. Her hands found their way to his hair, while he wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her closer and causing her to cradle over his body.

Zevian started teasing her with light pecks, nibbling her lower lip before biting it gently to gain entry into her mouth. Evelyn moaned as their tongues danced in a heated rhythm, sending waves of heat gushing between her legs.

Without breaking the kiss, Zevian swirled her onto the bed, causing her to hit the soft mattress with a gentle bounce. Evelyn gasped in surprise, the sound lost between their lips. They pulled back, breathless and lost in each other’s eyes. There was a hint of hesitation in Zevian’s gaze, but Evelyn grabbed his collar and pulled him into another kiss, this time soft yet sensual. His hands roamed over her back, pulling her impossibly closer, feeling the warmth of her body meld with his.

Evelyn’s hands moved down, her fingers deftly working on the buttons of his shirt. Each pop of a button sent a thrill through her, her lips never leaving his. As her hands ventured lower, reality crashed over Zevian. His eyes snapped open, and he abruptly pulled back, his breath ragged like hers.

Their fiery eyes locked, and he cursed himself for losing control and taking advantage of her vulnerable state. Slowly, he removed her hands that clutched onto his shirt before moving away, confusing and hurting her.

"Take those meds and sleep. Good night," he said, avoiding her eyes, the weight of his guilt heavy in his voice.

He walked out of the room, each step filled with regret. Leaning over the glass railing, he asked one of the maids to stay with Evelyn before heading to his room, desperate for a cold shower to calm the storm of emotions raging inside him.

Evelyn was left staring at the door, her heart pounding and her mind spinning. The desire that had consumed her moments ago now left her feeling empty and cold. She couldn’t understand what had just happened, or why he had pushed her away after everything.

She sat up, confusion and a mix of emotions swirling within her that Zevian’s touch had stirred within her. The longing, the ache, the need for him was overwhelming, and in her drunken state, she had expressed feelings she could never dare to voice otherwise.

Before she could gather her thoughts, a churning sensation erupted in her stomach. She quickly rushed to the bathroom and emptied the contents of her stomach into the toilet. Relief washed over her; at least she hadn’t done this while they were kissing, saving herself from an ocean of embarrassment.

While on the other side of the city, someone else was also having quite a night—a disastrous one.

William had just returned from a grueling day of meetings, signing documents, and strategizing ways to keep his company afloat amidst the recent blows it had taken. As he was about to relax, his assistant sent him another message about a mess caused by none other than his sweet daughter and wife.

Since Evelyn’s marriage and the ongoing online debates about who was evil, his stocks had been plummeting, and shareholders were on the verge of abandoning him. If not for their resort projects with Reign Constructions, his company would have gone bankrupt by now. The chaos these two women caused at the Reign party was the last straw, with a video of a furious Rosalind Reign circulating online.

"I’m sorry, Papa!" Annabelle cried, clutching William’s arm tightly. "Evy was insulting me again, and the wine just slipped out of my hand. But before I could clear it up, Mom and Elaine came and made a scene."

Sophia, sitting on the adjacent couch, sneered but quickly masked her irritation with tears. "I’m really sorry, honey. Evelyn always picks on Annabelle, and I thought she did it again."

"She doesn’t, Sophia. You know that very well," William’s words surprised both women, who exchanged confused glances before turning back to him. With a sigh, the old man continued, "You instigate, and she just falls for it."

Sophia opened and closed her mouth in horror, not expecting this twist. She thought her husband was oblivious, but it seemed he had just been pretending all this time.

William sighed, placing down the tablet. Sophia had always picked on Evelyn since childhood, and he had ignored it, believing she deserved it for killing his dear wife. But now that Evelyn had someone powerful backing her, they needed to stop pulling tricks on her. He even decided to be kind to her from today, though she still disgusted him.

Turning to his supposed beloved daughter, he said, "Forget about it, Anna. Papa will handle it." With a warm smile, he affectionately patted her head before asking her to rest.

Annabelle nodded, kissing her father’s cheek. "Good night, Papa." She then walked upstairs to her room.

Once she left, William turned to Sophia, his expression icy. "Don’t ever try something funny on Evelyn, Sophia. Not until our project is over."

Sophia nodded, masking her irritation with tears. So, even this man was now slowly shifting sides, she thought, gritting her teeth in annoyance.

Once William went to their room, Sophia headed to the kitchen, using the excuse of getting a water jar. Ensuring no one was around, she opened a drawer and took out a burner phone hidden deep in the rice jar. Dusting it off, she switched it on and texted Rick for updates. Moments later, she received a call from him.

"They’re starting to dig into you, Sophie," Maverick stated worriedly from the other end. Sophia ran a hand through her hair, placing the other on her waist, anger boiling within her.

"Zevian’s connections run deep in the mafia. It wouldn’t take him long to find out about us and ruin our plans," Maverick continued, his words true and likely prophetic.

"What should we do now?" Sophia asked, struggling to find a solution. If only this devil hadn’t shown up, she would have been the owner of all this wealth by now.

"Let’s just kill her," Rick suggested, his tone serious. "I’ll take the blame, just like I did in her mother’s case. Once Elias becomes the sole heir, you can bail me out."

Sophia found the idea rather tempting. In fact, there wouldn’t be a better way than to make the daughter of her dear friend share the same fate as her mother. "Let’s do it," she agreed without hesitation.
