The Billionaire's Rental Wife Is A Hot Shot-Chapter 31: Catching Culprit
Chapter 31: Catching Culprit
Evelyn woke with a throbbing headache, groaning as she sat up in bed. The sharp sun rays filtered through the window, intensifying her discomfort. Rubbing her eyes, she scanned the room, and a frown crept across her lips as she realized she was in Zevian’s house.
What happened last night? The only thing she remembered was going to Bobby’s bar with Zevian and sharing how they fell in love with the twins.
"Ahhh!" she grumbled as her head pounded, her hands quickly reaching to massage her temples.
"Good morning, Ma’am," Agatha said, smiling as she entered the room to check on her. Placing a coffee tray down on the nightstand, she handed over the hangover tonic Zevian had given her.
"Thank you, Agatha," Evelyn mumbled, drinking the tonic in a few gulps. Her alcohol tolerance was very low, and it seemed like she had drunk quite a lot last night.
"Would you like to have breakfast here, Ma’am?" Agatha asked.
Evelyn shook her head. "No, I’ll freshen up and come downstairs. Where’s Kiana?" she asked, wondering if she was alright. Sabrina’s scene might have taken a toll on the poor girl as well.
"She went to school from Reign Mansion, Ma’am," Agatha replied. Looking at the clock that was ticking past eleven, she added, "If you’re free today, we can pick her up at three." Kiana had looked somber not finding both her daddy and mommy in the morning, and Agatha knew Evelyn would help lift the little girl’s spirits.
Evelyn nodded with a smile. She decided to take Kiana out in the evening to cheer her up like she did for her father last night. As Agatha left, Evelyn quickly texted Avery and went to freshen up.
After getting ready, Evelyn walked downstairs, and a smile spread across her lips when she saw Zevian sitting on the couch, engrossed in his laptop. She quickly approached him.
Zevian looked up, sensing someone’s arrival, and his heart raced as Evelyn stood in front of him, her smile warm and tender. It seemed like she didn’t remember a thing, which made it even harder for him to look into her eyes. Averting his gaze back to his laptop, he asked, "You fine?"
"There’s a headache, but Agatha got me some meds, so I think I’ll be fine by today," Evelyn answered with a smile, sitting beside him.
Zevian’s entire body tensed up as their arms brushed against each other, his heart racing like a wild horse. Unlike him, Evelyn didn’t seem affected at all and simply took out her phone to check on Avery. Taking a deep breath, Zevian slightly moved away, creating enough distance between them.
These were the perks of her drunken escapade: causing a life-altering scene and letting others bear its consequences. Taking a deep breath, he focused on the upcoming meeting, trying to distract himself from her and her passionate kiss last night.
The maid delivered coffee to Evelyn, which she accepted with a smile and drank. Both busied themselves in their work before Zevian decided to speak again.
"Have breakfast and get ready. Let’s start investigating to find the culprit messing with your life," he stated, his voice low but intimidating. Now that the problems in his company raised by their marriage had been sorted out, he decided to focus on her issues. Whoever had been troubling her for the past couple of months, he would make sure to show them hell.
Evelyn blinked, taking a moment to realize he was talking about the fake heiress and other scandals. With a smile, she nodded and focused back on the meeting details Avery had sent for their new project.
Silence enveloped them for a moment before Zevian suddenly began sneezing uncontrollably. He reached for a few tissues, but the sneezing didn’t relent, and tears formed in his eyes.
Evelyn, concerned, moved closer and handed him more tissues from the box. She watched, worried, as his sneezes continued unabated. Whenever he caught a cold, it was always severe, and the relentless sneezing had always scared her in the past.
"It must be from riding the bike last night," she mumbled, feeling guilty for dragging him out on such a chilly night. That too, to a beach!
Zevian shook his head, voice muffled by a tissue. "I took a cold shower last night. It’s probably that."
Evelyn frowned, her concern deepening. She moved closer to check if he had a fever, but Zevian recoiled, the proximity heightening his discomfort. "I’ll be fine. Stay back—you might catch it."
Evelyn scowled, grabbing his arm and forcing him to face her. Their faces were mere inches apart, and Zevian’s heart raced at the close contact. His mind replayed last night’s passionate moments, intensifying his torment.
Evelyn glared at him, oblivious to the smoldering desire in his eyes, before pressing her warm hand against his forehead. Even his sneezes stopped, his mind going into overdrive as sparks ignited from the point of contact.
Badum! Badum!
Zevian’s heart pounded furiously. His eyes were drawn to her lips as she nervously bit her lower lip, a habit she had when tense. The touch of her hand sent waves of heat through him, making it even harder to control himself.
Their eyes locked again, and he gulped, struggling to keep his composure. The sensation was maddening, a pure torture to his poor heart.
"Thank goodness! You don’t have a fever," Evelyn mumbled, withdrawing her hand and looking at him with a frown. She scolded him gently, "No sane man would take a cold shower at midnight in this weather."
"Well, he might, when his wife decides to be irresistibly provocative in the middle of the night and drives him insane," Zevian grumbled, his words causing Evelyn’s eyes to widen in shock.
Her heart raced as she tried to process his meaning, and the realization of what she might have done hit her hard.
Quickly getting up from the couch, Evelyn stammered, "Wh-what did I do?"
Zevian smirked, seeing her tense up, the torture he had been bearing all this time. And he decided to double it down. Grabbing her wrist, he pulled her onto his lap.
Evelyn’s body flushed with heat as she felt his hand encircle her waist. She sucked in a sharp breath as his grip tightened, the warmth of his palm searing through the thin fabric of her top.
With his free hand, Zevian lifted her chin, his thumb caressing her jawline, and forced her to look up at him. The intensity in his eyes made her pulse quicken, the world around them blurring until all she could see was him and his enticing lips.
"Let me show you exactly what you did," Zevian muttered in a low, husky voice, his smirk sending a shiver down Evelyn’s spine.
