"I wanted to be a pilot. Or maybe be in the military." He said. "I wanted a life outside of the company and my family’s drama." Alanis moved his hands through his hair as he sighed.
While every heir chased their inheritance, Alanis did none of that. In fact, he has never handled any business in his life. He made sure he didn’t take part in anything related to it and just let George deal with that.
But it’s surprising how his plans failed terribly.
"But you were too young to be in the army," Harlow said. He was only a high school student.
"I was determined to run away." He chuckled. "I joined the newly recruited members that year. I was young, but I was strong and smart." He bragged and Harlow rolled her eyes.
"But then my father died, and I was forced to come back." He stated.
"But it’s not easy to pull out of the military, especially if your DAOR has expired," Harlow said. Once you are in you’re truly in.
"Hmm, but grandma did her thing and I was out." He shrugged.
"What did she do?" Harlow asked curiously, her green eyes so bright as she stared at him.
"Accident. She made me fake an accident so that I could save the business and marry you." Her heart skipped at the word marry, but she knew she had initiated it all along.
She had cried to her father for weeks begging to be married to Alanis. Frank did everything in his power to force his daughter into the Hamilton family. Right now, she felt ashamed to have been that desperate.
Harlow wanted to say more but then realized this Alanis was from the future not from the past. She held her tongue instead. He doesn’t know what a future with her is like, even if she knows.
"And you never once loved me." She said to see him nod.
"Not even a little," Alanis said finally meeting her gaze. "But like they say, love grows and eventually blossoms into something beautiful." He leaned closer and she moved backward, both his hands trapping her on the bed as his large frame covered her.
"I don’t know what spell you cast on me woman, but I’m madly in love with you." His lips touched hers lightly before letting her go.
"Come here my villain, let’s get you ready for the day." He held her wrist and lifted her off the bed as he took her into the bathroom.
After breakfast that morning, Harlow and Alanis left to sign a few things at the company before visiting Frank who was admitted to the hospital.
As they reached the company, they were both greeted by Gus, who looked exhausted. "Good morning my bosses." Gus greeted with a smile.
"How are things going around here Gus?" Harlow asked.
"Smoothly. Work has been efficient. However, he still keeps coming back even after using the security to chase him out before. Gus frowned. He had no idea why that man decided to be so stubborn. Right now, he was looking for trouble.
Both Alanis and Harlow frowned. "What does he want?" Alanis was the one to ask this time.
"He still says boss lady has no right to fire him and that he wants his position back, else you’re both going to face the consequences," Gus stated.
"When next Lincoln comes back, let me know immediately," Harlow said.
"Yes boss, but madam Claudia already took charge of it." Harlow narrowed her eyes at him.
"What do you mean by that?
Claudia had arrived earlier with George asking for a position and demanding to see Harlow too. She was desperate, the loan sharks were after her, and they wanted their money.
The money Elisa had gotten from Frank could not do anything, she needed more and the only place she could get it from now was the Hamilton’s Corp. She could embezzle money as usual and blame it on Harlow. Making her sister lose her job and position as CEO and she would be in charge again.
When Claudia saw Lincoln, she listened to him speak and promised to give him a position in the company if only he helped her kick Harlow out. She needed to recruit more people to her side so that they could impeach Harlow as soon as possible.
That bitch is the only thing stopping her from clearing her loan.
"She said she would..." Gus hesitated because he had found Claudia’s words to be stupid too. She doesn’t have the power to decide who gets fired or not.
"...Give him his job back," Gus said. Harlow only smiled. She understood Claudia’s games so well, that she knew her fight with her fake sister was far from being over.
Claudia has played the drum, it is her turn to dance according to her beat.
"That’s alright Gus, we’ll settle that in the family." Gus nodded and started walking away.
"Let’s sign the papers and leave quickly Alanis." They moved towards the elevator, Alanis pressed a button and the door opened. Both people stepped in and the doors closed again.
Harlow would need to speak to Evan again, she was sure he would help her this time. She would need to start dealing with Claudia, first by cutting both her name and that of her mother from their family for good.
She would mess with Claudia’s precious public image, the image she values the most, and make sure she pays for everything they’ve done to her.
In this life, she would be their biggest nightmare.
After signing the papers, both Harlow and Alanis headed for the hospital where Frank was. Harlow could only hope her father had learned his lessons and would not go back to that stupid woman.
When they reached the hospital, they were led by Paius to Frank’s ward. The elderly-looking man lay sleeping on the medium-sized bed. His chest rose and fell as he slept in peace.
"We’re lucky to not have lost him last night Miss Harlow," Paius said staring at his master. Elisa has chased away the entire maids, hiring new ones in less than 24 hours, she has thrown all of Frank’s property from their home and has brought her former lover in.
The same Bodhi she swore she would never be with.
"How serious was it?" Harlow asked.
"Bad." Was all Paius said as they watched the man on the bed? To Harlow, Frank deserves everything he was getting and more. Favoring one child above the other was bad parenting, there was truly no justification for his actions.
"When did the doctors say he would wake up?" Harlow asked, her eyes still on him.
"He had already woken up this morning, he’s only taking his afternoon rest." He said. Harlow took a step closer to her father’s bed. Alanis signaled the butler and both men stepped out of the room, giving the father and daughter the space they needed.
Harlow stopped walking when she reached the side of his bed. She sat by the side, holding his hands in hers. In the past, she had lost the only family she had, Frank did not get to live as long as he should have.
He was brutally murdered by the people he called his family. He pushed her aside, hated her for Claudia’s lies, and cut all ties with her. Harlow couldn’t watch them kill him again. Even if he never once loved and appreciated her, he was still her father. He is her family.
"Stubborn fool." She cussed beneath her breath.
"How does it feel to lose everything you thought you had?" She removed a few strands of hair from his pale face. "They have put you through so much yet in the end, left you to suffer." She said.
"In the end, I’m the only one who still wants you. The only one who will still call you father."
"I’m sorry to have hurt you, Harlow." Frank suddenly opened his eyes and Harlow’s eyes went wide a little. She had no idea she was crying till he reached for her face and wiped the tears from her eyes.
Harlow has always been his favorite child, but Elisa kept telling him terrible things about his daughter. That wicked woman had managed to turn his mind against his real child and made him favor her child more.
"I have no right to speak to you, Harlow. I know I have been a wicked and stupid father to you. But I’m sorry." He said.
"You don’t have to forgive me, Harlow, I would understand if you don’t," Frank said.
"Don’t address Claudia as your sister anymore Harlow. I know it’s shocking, but she’s not your sister." Frank broke the most heartbreaking news to her. He wasn’t surprised that his youngest daughter didn’t react to the news. She never likes Claudia and Elisa anyway.
"I know," Harlow said.
"Paius told you?"
"No, I knew before then." She said.
