Both Alanis and Harlow watched Lia walk away. If only she knew their fight started a lifetime ago.
"She’s right. For the sake of his recovery, can we at least pretend we’re fine?" Alanis stared at the woman who ignored his gaze and started pacing around again.
She loved him. She still does. But her hate for him was greater.
After what seemed like forever, the doctor stepped out of the room with the nurse and the couple rushed to him.
"How is he?" Alanis was the one to ask.
"Did you two fight before him again?" Both people could not respond to his words.
"Alex is in a critical condition he doesn’t need anything that would upset him." The doctor said.
"If you two cannot handle your son, I’m afraid we’ll have to call child support or better still hand him over to a family member who can take good care of him." He said.
"There’ll be no need for that. We’ll help him recover." Alanis said.
"Your son is dying, the least you can do is make him have the best time on earth before he leaves." The doctor said with a heavy sigh.
"He’s stable for now, make sure you don’t do anything to upset him again, or the next time, we might not be able to save him." He warned.
"Thank you." Harlow stepped inside the room while Alanis conversed more with the doctor. He needed a solution for his son. There’s no way he’s losing his child again. He’ll never allow that.
When Harlow entered Alex’s ward he was still fast asleep. She held herself from crying. If she wants her son to recover, then she has to be strong for him.
Maybe Lia is right. Her constant fight with Alanis is the reason Alex has ended up this way. Maybe it’s time she stopped fighting for the sake of their son.
She held his little hands in hers and immediately, he opened his eyes.
"Mummy." His little voice sounded in her ears and Harlow swallowed the lump in her throat. It was painful but she swallowed it.
Maybe Alex is not meant to live in this world. She couldn’t believe she was going through the pain of losing her child for the second time.
"Mummy I feel pain, and I’m so weak. Will I be better?" Harlow couldn’t hold her tears as they fell from her cheek.
"You’ll be fine baby." He said calmly. "I’m here now, mummy will always protect you." She said.
"What about Daddy, does he know I’m here?" Alex’s soft voice rang in the room.
"Is he gone already? Did you two fight again?" Harlow shook her head.
"Your daddy..."
"Is here," Alanis responded as he stepped in and Alex smiled.
"Daddy." Little Alex called softly and Alanis walked to him. He had not shown up in the past, but he was here now. He didn’t care if God was punishing him for the second time by taking his child, but he was here now.
He’s here for his son. When is this punishment ever going to end?
"And I also brought you yogurt." Alanis sat next to him.
"Daddy, I’m glad you’re here," Alex said.
"Of course, I’m here, I’ll always be here." Alanis stared at the woman who sat quietly staring at her son. His heart ached to see her like this, he wished he could take all of her pain away.
"Then why is mummy crying?" Alex asked and Harlow quickly wiped her tears. "Mummy if you cry you’ll only make me sad." His little lips curled in an attempt to cry and both people held him.
"No no, Alex, don’t cry. I... It’s not real cry. It’s tears of joy. My little baby is so brave and strong as always." Harlow said calmly.
"Hahaha, yes mummy. You’re strong too, daddy said I took after you a lot." Alex smiled.
"Of course you do. Drink your yogurt so that you can have strength, I need to use the restroom." Harlow rose from where she sat. She staggered a little before maintaining her balance and stepping inside the bathroom.
She stood before the mirror staring at her pale reflection. It’s so shocking how things have changed drastically. Just this morning she had hugged her son, kissing him as she said goodbye only to be here now.
Nothing was wrong with him before, so how did he suddenly get a heart disease?" She wiped her tears, eyes already swollen from too much crying. This was the first time she had no idea what to do.
She has acquired all of the money and power in the world, but none now can save her baby’s life.
The bathroom door opened with Alanis stepped in. Harlow didn’t look at him. She only sniffled and washed her face.
"Are you alright?" Alanis’s voice rang in the quiet room.
"You should not leave him alone in there," Harlow said.
"He’s with his aunt Villian." He said. "You’re not in this alone Harlow. I’m here, you don’t have to carry the burden alone." Alanis said calmly.
"Alex knows he has us both. Please let me be here with him. Let’s make him happy together." When she said nothing Alanis turned to leave.
"Alanis." Her soft voice called and as he turned around to respond, her fragile form clashed against him. Alanis didn’t hesitate to hold her. His heart felt heavy, with everything happening now, the least they could do was learn to get along with their child.
He didn’t know whether to cry or laugh at this. But Harlow’s silent sob stopped whatever excitement he was feeling.
He let her cry in him. And after what seemed like forever, she let him go. Harlow washed her face before stepping out of the restroom.
When they entered the ward again they could see Alex already playing with Lia.
"And after the amusement park, mummy and daddy will get married again and we’ll live happily ever after." He said happily.
"Aunt Lia, will I have siblings?" Alex asked his aunt who turned to both Alex and Harlow.
"You already have a sibling." Alanis said and Harlow’s confused gaze met his.
"His name is Liam."
