Chapter 299: The Darkness Returned

Emily looked over her shoulder and noticed the commotion going on inside the mansion, it seemed like the wolves had picked on the fact that something had happened.

She hurriedly unlocked the car door and climbed into the driver’s seat. As she started the car and pulled it out of the parking slot, she noticed Kaiden’s figure running down the stairway through the huge glass window on the third floor.

She was pretty aware that he couldn’t outrun him, especially if he decided to include the other wolves too. A mortal car was no match to these wolves. So she once again did what she shouldn’t have, she called on her powers - a burst of energy that shook her body before it lashed out from her palm and created a powerful ward surrounding the mansion.

She didn’t wait to watch if her ward was powerful enough to hold them back for too long as she raced the car down the road leading out of the estate and into the dense forest. Even though the ward won’t be able to hold him back for too long, at least it would give her enough time to escape.

But who was she escaping from? Was it Kaiden? Or was it her past? If it was the former then she could probably succeed if she tried her best. But the same couldn’t be said about the latter. She had never succeeded in running away from her past and no matter how hard she would try, she would never succeed in doing so even in the future.

The car went down the road, passing through the huge trees that were growing on both sides. The darkness of the night matched the one that was clawing at her and was trying to pull her down. Her heart was filled with so much pain that it was becoming harder for her to breathe but this pain wasn’t only hers.

She was also experiencing the pain that was killing Kaiden and his wolf from the inside, all because of her. The way she had reacted toward him had made his wolf believe that she wa rejecting them.

A sob escaped her lips as tears rolled down her cheeks, her body shaking as she increased the speed of the car. A part of her wanted to stop and return to the man who was still locked inside the ward that she had cast, it seemed to be more powerful than she presumed as he couldn’t take it down even after trying non-stop for several minutes.

However, the bigger part of her was only focused on running, the one thing she had been doing all her life and had never succeeded in. She always tried to run from her past but all in vain as even after so many years, she still couldn’t keep herself from getting dragged back into that darkness.

Blood was covering the floor of the car as her feet were bleeding because of the cuts, the shards digging deeper as she pressed on the accelerator to increase the speed even more. She tried to wipe away the tears that were staining her cheeks only to find her fingers surrounded by black smoke.

A gasp left her lips as she realized that the black smoke was not only surrounding her fingers but also her entire body. It was a sight that seemed pretty familiar - it was the darkness that belonged to her.

The frustration that instantly filled her only made her hurt even more. The pain wasn’t physical but it was the worse she had ever experienced in her entire life. She just wanted all this to end but knew that she could no longer avoid the truth or reality.

The car finally pulled out of the forest road and onto the highway leading to the city and the only ones whom she could think of now were her brothers. She needed them, they were the only ones who won’t judge her and understand her. There was nothing that she could have done back then to save Elisa, she was barely in any state to save herself.

But then it was also true that Elisa desperately tried to approach her time and again, and every time she pushed the girl away thinking that she was talking nonsense. What if she had listened to her at least once? Would that have changed anything?

Emily let out a frustrated shriek as she banged her hand against the steering wheel, receiving a jolt in return that shook her entire hand. The ’what ifs’ were messing with her mind and making her think the worst out of everything.

She was so lost in her thoughts that she completely missed the car coming from the opposite end of the bridge where she was currently driving through. The bright headlights blinded her for a moment and it was all that took for her to lose her hold on the steering wheel. 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶

Everything happened so suddenly after that. There were sounds of horns piercing her eardrums, bright light filling the area, and just when she thought that both cars were going to collide, a mysterious person descended from above between both the cars as he used his powers to direct them in different directions.

Her car came to an abrupt stop and she watched in the rearview mirror as the other one collided with the guardrail before coming to a stop. A few long seconds passed as she tried to catch her breath and when she didn’t notice any movements from the other car, she hurriedly climbed out and ran towards it to make sure the person inside was safe.

If Emily thought that the worst had already happened to her in the form of Elisa and their shared past, she was so so wrong.

As she reached the driver’s side and tried to open the door, it flew open immediately, allowing her to take a look at the injured person inside who had already lost consciousness.

A gasp of terror left her lips when she realized that he was looking at none other than one of her brothers. It was Crist!
