Chapter 389: The Final Sacrifice

The remaining rogues moved to stand behind Rafael who was now ready to end the war for once and all. Below on the city streets, the two different armies clashed in discord of growls, snarls, and cries. The sounds of the clash of metals, spells, and fists filled the night.

On the rooftop, Emily, Shadow, and Kaiden faced Rafael and his rogues. "We will take care of the rogues. You take him down." Shadow told her, to which, Emily nodded her head in approval.

The very next moment, the rogues were rushing toward the trio to attack them. Kaiden’s form rippled and expanded, his clothes tearing away as he shifted into his massive silver wolf form. His growl echoed through the night as he launched himself at a rogue werewolf, teeth bared and claws extended. Shadow moved with the speed and precision, much more powerful compared to any other vampire out there. He took down enemies with lethal efficiency, his eyes glowing an unearthly red.

Meanwhile, Emily and Rafael got locked in a deadly dance of magic. Spells flew between them, illuminating the night sky with bursts of vibrant energy. Emily’s eyes blazed with determination as she wielded her magical weapons, deflecting Rafael’s attacks with practiced skill. Rafael was equally formidable, his dark power crackling with malevolence as he countered her every move.

"You can’t win, Rafael!" Emily shouted, her voice strong despite the exhaustion seeping into her bones with extreme use of magic. "Give up now, and maybe we can find a way to end this without more bloodshed."

Rafael laughed, a cold, mirthless sound. "Naive as ever, Emilia. This world is meant for the strong to rule, and I will not be denied my destiny."

Their duel intensified, each blow more desperate than the last. Blood trickled from cuts on Emily’s arms, and her breath came in ragged gasps. Rafael was faring no better, his face pale and strained from the exertion of their prolonged fight.

Emily might be more powerful among the two of them, but Rafael had far more experience in weilding spells when compared to a new bloomer like Emily. Still, the fight was draining both of them equally. As if the realization suddenly dawned on him, Rafael decided to end the war when he had the chance.

He summoned the dark powers while his lips started moving as he chanted an ancient dark forbidden spell that channeled the energy of the dead.

"If you won’t join me," Rafael declared, his voice ringing with finality, "then I will wipe you from existence. If your power can’t aid me in my mission, then I will not allow your power to become a threat to me." And then, he attacked her with the spell.

Emily raised her hands, desperately trying to shield herself against the onslaught. But the spell was too powerful, the air thickening with the oppressive presence of the dead. The energy coalesced into a dark, swirling vortex, hurtling toward her with unstoppable force. She tried to defend herself against the spell but it was too powerful.

"NO!" Shadow’s voice rang out, filled with a desperation Emily had never heard before. In an instant, he was in front of her, his body taking the full brunt of the spell as he consumed all the darkness in him.

The world seemed to slow to a crawl as the spell hit Shadow. His scream of agony tore through the night, and Emily felt a searing pain in her chest, as if a part of her very soul was being ripped away. The soulmate bond she shared with Shadow, a connection deeper than any magic, was severed within a moment.

"No...Shadow..." Emily whispered, her voice breaking. Her hand went to clutch her chest as pain took over her very being.

"Take h-him... down... NOW!" Shadow shouted through his rasped breathing as he fell on his knees.

Despite the pain, despite the realization of the loss and the hurt, Emily did as she was told. She closed her eyes and summoned her powers, calling her to come to her aid. She never expected to ever use the spell of death but here she was, sending the spell straight toward a very exhausted Rafael who was in no state to protect himself.

Only two more rogues were still left alive on the rooftop and they tried to stand in front of Rafael to save him from the spell just like Shadow saved her. What they didn’t know was that Emily’s spell was a hundred time more powerful than Rafael’s.

The ball of magic not only engulfed both the rogues, but even shot straight through Rafael, sending him flying backward before his back hit the cold and hard floor a couple feet away. Not wanting to take any chance, Emily sent her twin daggers flying with utmost precision and they landed straight into her enemy’s heart, confirming him dead.

Exhausted, hurt, and in immense pain, she fell to her knees next to Shadow who was looking way too pale. Tears streamed down her face as she reached out to him, securing him in her arms.

"You... y-you need blood. L-let me..."

Emily was struggling to speak as she fumbled with her sleeve to bare her wrist and offer it Shadow, but the man caught her wrist before she could.

He slowly shook his head while looking up at her with his dull eyes that seemed to be loosing their crimson color with each passing second. "It... it’s t-too... late..."

Emily hurriedly shook her head, refusing to believe those words. Despite feeling their soulmate bond vanishing with each passing second, she refused to believe that there was nothing she could do to save him.

Kaiden’s howl of anguish echoed her own grief, his wolf form trembled as he felt the loss of the man with whom he shared his bond. He shifted back to human form, tears streaking his face as he staggered toward them.

"Shadow...no..." Kaiden’s voice was choked with sobs as he knelt beside Emily, his hand reaching out to hold Shadow’s other hand.
