Jiang Zhi returned to the box more than ten minutes later and found Zhou Xufang sprawled motionless on the table.
“Xu Fang.”
No response.
Jiang Zhi bent over and called her, “Xu Fang.”
She still lay motionless.
Jiang Zhi called Ah Wan over, “What’s wrong with her?”
...
Ah Wan scratched his head, equally puzzled, “I don’t know either.” He was considerate and had intentionally gone to the next room to eat to avoid being a third wheel.
Jiang Zhi pulled up a chair and sat next to Zhou Xufang, leaned down close to her ear, and softly called, “Xu Fang.”
She looked up, staring blankly ahead, “Hmm?”
He moved his face into her line of sight, observed her bleary appearance, and couldn’t resist patting her head, “What’s wrong? Are you sleepy?”
Her head wobbled, and her eyes welled up with tears, “Stop shaking; it’s making my eyes blur.”
He wasn’t shaking though.
Jiang Zhi leaned in closer with his nose, sniffed, and asked, “Have you been drinking?”
She suddenly giggled, continuing to sway her head.
Ah Wan muttered, “There was no alcohol ordered.”
Jiang Zhi leaned in closer and sniffed again but still couldn’t smell any alcohol, “Xu Fang, you—”
Before he could finish, two ice-cold hands cupped his face.
She turned her head to look at him, her eyes wet and lashes fluttering, with a vague yet intense gaze, she asked him, “Are you Jiang Zhi?”
Her eyes were hazy, and her voice soft and limp, like she had pulled all her prickles out, turning into a soft bundle, tickling your heart.
Jiang Zhi’s heart melted.
He smiled and patted her face, “Yes, I’m Jiang Zhi.”
She blankly processed this for a moment, then lifted her hand and gently patted his face, the action extremely light. After patting, her hand hung around his neck; she leaned in and nuzzled his shoulder, adorably helpless, “Can you carry me home? I want to sleep.”
Her cool face rested against his neck, moving haphazardly.
Jiang Zhi felt a ticklish itch, his fingers curling, he steadied her restless self. “Aren’t you eating anything?”
She shook her head, her cheeks flushed and eyes moist.
So adorable.
And she didn’t throw a drunken tantrum.
Jiang Zhi grabbed her coat, helped her into it, then squatted in front of her, “Climb on, I’ll carry you.”
She pursed her lips, giggled, and clambered onto his back.
At this moment, she was utterly defenseless against him, tilting her head to whisper by his ear, “Can I bite you?”
Jiang Zhi turned around, “Lin Wanwan, please leave.”
Lin Wanwan: “!”
Boss, please be a decent human being!
Ah Wan, too nervous to intervene, anxiously looked back three times as he exited.
Once the door closed, Jiang Zhi set her down on a chair and knelt before her.
The old lady at home often advised that a gentleman should know what to do and what not to do; The young master of the Jiang Family should epitomize morality, demeanour, and integrity.
He had never agreed with this doctrine of gentlemanliness, favoring tactics of supporting those who align with him and opposing those who don’t. Usually, he would play the role, acting like a graceful gentleman from a painting.
But not today, not in front of her.
He steadied her and freed one hand to tug down the collar of her sweatshirt, “Lightly, do you understand?”
It took a long time before they emerged.
Ah Wan hurried over, checking on the employer with the unconscious person on his back, “Boss, is Miss Zhou alright?”
Jiang Zhi ignored him and continued walking with her on his back.
Ah Wan, frantic, couldn’t keep his words to himself, “And you’re okay?” He didn’t dare to ask outright if he had behaved decently, instead offering, “Let me carry her; you’re not in good shape yourself.”
The ‘not in good shape’ Jiang Zhi looked back with a cold glare, “Go pay the bill.”
His aggressiveness was palpable, like a wolf guarding its food.
Ah Wan reflexively shuddered, “Oh.” Truly a beast!
Fortunately, this meal ultimately didn’t cost Miss Zhou’s ‘hard-earned money.’
At the ground floor, Jiang Zhi put a facemask on Zhou Xufang as the Boss Lady approached, “Heading out?” Zhou Xufang had been helping in the shop with deliveries, and they had become somewhat acquainted, so the Boss Lady casually asked, “What’s wrong with Xu Fang?”
“She’s drunk.”
“Last time was the same, got drunk without drinking anything.”
Jiang Zhi didn’t want to elaborate and headed for the exit.
The person on his back suddenly stirred.
Jiang Zhi stopped to ask what was wrong.
She slurred unclearly, “Jiang Zhi.”
“Yes?”
She looked up, pointing to the ceiling, “I want to jump up there.”
Jiang Zhi looked up, momentarily dazzled by the chandelier’s bright light.
By his ear, the girl quietly said, “I’ll tell you a secret, I can jump really high.”
Jiang Zhi didn’t rush out but turned to listen closely, “Why do you want to jump up there?”
Her face flushed as she gazed upward, her eyes catching the light, shimmering mesmerizingly. She said, “I want to take that chandelier home.” Her head wobbling, she mused dreamily, “It’s so beautiful; I want to hide it away.”
She seemed to really like beautiful things.
Jiang Zhi looked up at the porcelain-carved lamp on the ceiling, “You want that lamp?”
She nodded vigorously, “Mm-hmm.”
Jiang Zhi, still carrying her, returned to the cashier counter and asked the Boss Lady, “Could you sell me that chandelier?”
The Boss Lady hesitated, “This…”
Jiang Zhi cut to the chase, “Name your price.”
“Okay.”
The Boss Lady quickly agreed.
Zhou Xufang cuddled against Jiang Zhi’s neck, giggling foolishly—it really was a foolish giggle. She rarely laughed, and when she did, her expression was somewhat stiff, resembling an innocent child unversed in worldly matters.
Jiang Zhi, shielded by the facemask, kissed her cheek and carried her out of the porridge shop.
Ah Wan was left behind. After the shop closed, he would need to contact someone to remove the lamp, but he was truly worried about Miss Zhou, unconscious and in the clutches of his beastly employer.
