The Cat-Like Miss Preston: Mr. CEO begs for Reconciliation!-Chapter 127: Chloe, Kiss Me
The butler ran too fast, and the ground was slippery. With a sudden SLIP, he crashed to the floor.
He was in too much pain to stand, but he lay on the floor and continued to shout, "Old Master, please come down! The madam will be here any moment!"
Just then, bodyguards came running down the stairs, carrying an injured man. Blood seeped from his wounds, dripping onto the floor.
"Donovan, hold on a little longer! I’m taking you to the hospital right now!" Chloe Preston stayed close by his side, pressing a handkerchief to his wound to stanch the bleeding while also wiping the sweat from his forehead.
Donovan Xavier’s eyelids felt heavy as he fought to stay conscious. "Slow... slow down," he managed, his voice strained. "You’re pregnant... Be... care...ful..." He didn’t have the strength to finish a full sentence. His face was ghastly pale, his head was heavy, and he was on the verge of passing out.
"Donovan, don’t fall asleep. We’ll be at the hospital soon. I’m begging you, please don’t fall asleep..." Chloe sobbed, tears streaming down her face.
Just then, a servant pushed a wheelchair in from outside.
Luna Kane sat in the wheelchair, her hair silver and her aged face without a hint of a smile. She wore a dark blue, silk-embroidered qipao, a thin blanket covering her legs.
She looked up just in time to see the bodyguards carrying the injured man toward her.
When Chloe saw her, she froze for a moment. "Grandma?"
Luna’s hand, which was fingering a string of Buddha Beads, stilled. Her brows knitted in worry as she looked at the man. "What happened to Donovan? Who did this to him?"
Chloe didn’t have time to explain. "Grandma, I have to get Donovan to the hospital first," she said hurriedly. "I’ll explain when I get back. We have to go!"
With that, she ran out with the bodyguards.
"You..." Luna turned, watching their retreating figures.
"Luna..."
A deep, powerful voice called out, laced with huskiness and the weight of years.
Luna’s eyelashes trembled. Though decades had passed, she still recognized his voice. It was as if she had never forgotten it.
She looked up, and her gaze met that of the man on the stairs. They weren’t far apart, yet it felt as if an impassable chasm lay between them.
Caleb Xavier was leaning on a dragon-headed cane. The moment he saw her clearly, he stumbled and nearly fell.
Rosalind Rowan caught his arm. "Grandfather."
Caleb pursed his lips and cautiously made his way toward her, one step at a time.
As he looked at her face, his eyes gradually grew moist, his vision blurring.
How long had it been since he’d last seen her? Forty-nine years. A full forty-nine years. He had grown old, and so had she. For countless days and nights, he had fantasized about this moment—that she would appear before him just like today and say, "Caleb Xavier, I don’t hate you anymore. I forgive you."
Caleb’s voice choked with emotion. Restraining the tempest raging within him, he sank to one knee and said hoarsely, "Luna... I never thought you’d be willing to come back and see me again."
"I... I thought I would wait a lifetime and never see this day."
Luna’s expression was indifferent, her eyes as still as stagnant water.
Caleb reached out a trembling hand, wanting to touch her.
Luna shot him a look of pure disgust.
Caleb immediately withdrew his hand and pressed his lips together. "Alright. I won’t touch you, you have my word."
"Luna, are... are you hungry? Thirsty? I remember how much you loved the seafood porridge I used to make. I’ll go make some for you."
"That won’t be necessary," Luna replied coldly, as if he were a complete stranger.
She glanced around at the decor. It seemed nothing had changed; it was all just as she had left it.
Caleb’s gaze remained fixed on her. He smiled. "You see, Luna? The house is still the same. It hasn’t changed all these years."
"I’ve been waiting for you. I’m still your Caleb."
Luna let out a soft, cold sneer. "How disgusting."
Caleb’s expression stiffened. Then, forcing a hopeful smile, he asked, "Luna, how about I take you to see your old room?"
Luna didn’t even deign to look at him. Closing her eyes, she began to gently finger her Buddha Beads. "What happened to my dear grandson?" she asked softly.
"He’s covered in blood. Which wretched bastard did this to him? I’ll see to it they’re dead!"
Caleb’s gaze darted away, and he swallowed hard.
...
「Afternoon. The hospital.」
In the hospital room, Donovan Xavier lay on the large bed, his eyes closed and his lips a pale, thin line. He was hooked up to an IV drip, looking utterly exhausted and weak.
Chloe’s heart ached for him. She stayed by his bedside, holding his cold hand, refusing to let go.
After a time, he murmured softly, "Chloe..."
Chloe heard him. Wiping away her tears, she leaned in and pressed a light kiss to the corner of his mouth. "Mm, I’m here," she said, her voice hoarse from crying. "I’m right here with you."
A moment later, his fingers twitched. His brows furrowed slightly as his eyes slowly opened.
The overhead light was blinding, and it took Donovan a moment to adjust.
"You’re awake?" Chloe’s eyes were misty. She gently nuzzled her nose against his face, her tone infinitely tender.
Donovan nodded, his face pale. He loved opening his eyes and seeing her there.
"Don’t cry." Seeing the tears welling in her eyes, Donovan tried to raise his hand to wipe them away, but he couldn’t muster the strength.
"You just woke up. Don’t try to move," Chloe said anxiously.
Donovan nodded again, a faint smile touching his lips as he gazed at her. He could look at his Chloe for a lifetime and never grow tired of it.
Chloe tucked the blanket in around him and held his hand. "Does anywhere feel uncomfortable?" she asked softly.
Donovan’s lips twitched into a small smile. "Mm... I’m weak all over, and the wound hurts a little."
"Kiss me, Chloe."
Chloe naturally obliged. She lowered her head, pecking his cheek before pressing a gentle, earnest kiss to his cold lips.
He savored the kiss for a moment. Despite his exhaustion, a small smile played on his lips. "Have you been eating candy? You taste sweet."
Chloe nodded. "Isla said I looked pale. She was worried I had low blood sugar, so she bought some candy for me to eat."
"Guess what flavor it was?"
Donovan put on a show of frowning. "I don’t know."
"Come closer. Kiss me again, a little harder this time. I’m sure I’ll be able to guess then."
