The Cat-Like Miss Preston: Mr. CEO begs for Reconciliation!-Chapter 148: Let Your Husband Kiss You Again
As he spoke, he lifted his gaze and glanced at Connor Sutton.
"President Sutton, do I need to remind you that she’s a married woman? It would be best if you stopped thinking about her."
"So what if I am?" Connor Sutton said coldly. "I’ll think about her if I want to. It’s true you’re married, but can you guarantee you won’t get divorced in the future?"
"I can," Donovan Xavier replied.
Connor Sutton’s voice was flat. "Fine. Time will tell. I’ll be waiting."
He met Donovan’s gaze and unabashedly rolled his eyes at him.
Donovan Xavier turned his head to look at Chloe. "I called you earlier. Why didn’t you answer?"
Chloe Preston was taken aback. She took her phone out of her pocket and pressed the power button, but it was dead.
"It must have run out of battery. I didn’t hear it ring."
"Is that so?" Donovan said. "I was worried you were giving me the cold shoulder for not replying to your message."
Chloe Preston’s expression changed instantly. She pursed her lips and asked accusatorially, "Then why didn’t you reply to my message?"
Donovan Xavier didn’t answer. He stepped forward, glanced at the fish in the basin, and asked in a low voice, "Do you want it steamed or braised?"
"Whatever," Chloe said.
Connor Sutton shot a look out of the corner of his eye. "Oh, you can cook?"
"Heh. Who are you looking down on?"
Donovan lifted the fish out, placed it on the cutting board, and began to prep it. His movements were practiced and his face expressionless as the knife rose and fell.
"Chloe, is there an apron?"
"Yes." Chloe Preston found a brown halter apron and walked over to hand it to him.
With his hands busy with the fish, Donovan said in a deep voice, "My hands are full. Help me put it on."
Chloe reached out to help him. "You’re too tall."
Donovan immediately leaned down so she could reach. They were so close, interacting with a natural ease. The scene exuded a sense of quiet, domestic harmony. His dark eyes were deep as he gazed at her exquisite face. His Adam’s apple bobbed, and he instinctively leaned in, pressing a kiss to the corner of her lips.
It was light and gentle.
Chloe’s eyelashes fluttered wildly. She took a step back, asking shyly, "What are you doing?"
Donovan’s gaze was filled with her. A smile tugged at his lips. "You’re so beautiful, Chloe. I couldn’t help but want to kiss you."
"Come here. Let your husband kiss you again."
Chloe’s face flushed crimson as she shot him a reproachful glare.
There was someone else right here, yet he didn’t know to show a bit of restraint.
"Why are you glaring at me?" Donovan chuckled. "Don’t you like your husband kissing you?"
CRASH!
A porcelain plate smashed on the floor, shattering into pieces with a sharp crack.
Connor Sutton’s eyes went cold. "Donovan Xavier, am I invisible to you?"
"That’s right," Donovan’s voice was placid. "She’s my wife. It’s only right and proper for me to kiss her. If you can’t stand the sight, then gouge your eyes out."
"You!" Enraged, Connor Sutton smashed another plate, turned on his heel, and stormed out, slamming the door behind him.
Chloe went to close the door properly, then walked back to Donovan. "Why did you have to provoke him like that?"
Donovan pulled her into his embrace, leaned down to her ear, and lightly nipped her earlobe. "Because he won’t stop coveting what’s mine," he murmured. "And you belong only to me."
"That tickles... Stop biting," Chloe protested, trying to push him away. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺
"Let... me go."
Donovan smiled, moving down to nibble a soft spot on her neck. "Fine. But first, you have to call me your husband."
Chloe turned her head away and said nothing.
"You don’t want to?"
"I don’t want to," Chloe said.
He’d given her the cold shoulder last night for no reason, deliberately ignored her message, and now he was suddenly all over her. What did he take her for? She was a person, a living, breathing person. Of course she was angry that he treated her this way.
Chloe turned to leave.
Donovan pulled her back, holding her in his warm embrace. "Are you angry?"
Chloe struggled slightly. "How could I possibly dare to be angry with you? Weren’t you the one giving me the cold shoulder? Weren’t you ignoring me?"
Donovan buried his face in the crook of her neck, nuzzling her. "How could I ever bear to give you the cold shoulder?"
Especially not when she had been calling another man’s name in her dreams. Repeatedly. What man could stand for that?
Chloe’s eyes grew misty as she fought back tears. "You did! Otherwise, why didn’t you reply to my message?"
"But I called you later. And besides, I came all the way here for you."
"But... but you didn’t even hold me when you slept last night! And you left this morning without kissing me. You were so dismissive!"
Hearing this, Donovan couldn’t help but let out a soft chuckle. He rested his forehead against hers, his voice a low, gentle rasp. "Then how about I hold you all night tonight, and I kiss you right now? Is that okay?"
"No." Chloe’s anger hadn’t subsided, and she pushed him away.
But Donovan simply captured the back of her neck with one hand, bent his head, and caught her lips in a sudden, unexpected kiss.
It was domineering and fierce.
Chloe fought back, refusing the kiss and biting down on his lip.
Donovan flinched back in pain but kept his arm around her. He cooed, "Why are you so feisty, Chloe? Tell your husband what I can do to make you happy."
"No need. There are plenty of people willing to make me happy. You’re not one of them."
Donovan kissed her forehead, his handsome face softening. His voice was a tender caress. "Yes, plenty of people want to make you happy. My Chloe is just that popular. But you only have one husband to do it."
"Sweetheart, please don’t be angry with me anymore. I was wrong, okay?"
"Wife... Honey..."
"You like it when I call you that, don’t you?"
Chloe’s face was slightly flushed. "I do not," she mumbled.
"You’re just pretending you don’t."
Chloe broke free from his arms. "Hurry up and cook. Everyone outside is getting anxious."
A dazzling, unrestrained smile spread across Donovan’s handsome face. "Alright, whatever my wife says..."
Chloe walked to the side and dished out the ribs Connor Sutton had cooked. The aroma was rich and tantalizing. Remembering the taste from earlier, she picked up her chopsticks and put a piece in her mouth.
"Is it good?" Donovan glanced over, his voice suddenly turning icy.
Chloe nodded. "Mhm. He’s a really good cook."
"Heh."
Donovan stepped forward, extending his long arms to cage her against him once more. "Chloe Preston. Praising another man right in front of me... Aren’t you afraid of making me jealous?"
Chloe blinked her clear, limpid eyes. "And what happens if you get jealous?"
"I’ll go crazy," he whispered into her ear, his tone deliberately vicious. "I’ll do anything. I’ll bully you until you cry."
Chloe asked, playing dumb, "And how would you bully me?"
"What do you think?" Donovan purred, his lips curling. His gaze was predatory. As he held her from behind, he pressed his hips forward in a subtle, not-so-accidental motion. "Sweetheart, did you feel that?"
Chloe remained calm, gently pushing him away. "But his cooking really is delicious."
Donovan looked her in the eyes. "How delicious?"
"You’ll know once you try some."
"Fine, I’ll have a taste then."
"Okay, I’ll get you a piece."
Instead, Donovan grabbed her wrist, pinning her against the nearby wall. He cupped her jaw with one hand and captured her lips.
Chloe was forced to accept it.
The kiss was fleeting. Donovan released her, his thumb stroking her damp, pink lips. He smiled. "I tasted it. But I didn’t get a clear impression. I need to go deeper."
With that, he leaned in again. His mouth claimed hers, tasting and exploring as he slipped his tongue past her teeth to sweep through her mouth.
"Mmph..."
