The CEO's Wife Is a Medical Master-Chapter 13: Truly Shameless
Rona Langdon had been all set to scold Vera Xavier, but when she saw the color drain from Daisy Archer and Jeremy Kane’s faces, she leaned over for a look and froze on the spot.
It was a photo of Wesley Kane passionately kissing a woman. In the picture, Wesley was deep in the kiss, his hand already inside the woman’s clothes, touching somewhere it shouldn’t be.
Most importantly, the background behind them was a small alley on South Street. From that alley, the landmark South Tower was clearly visible.
South Street was the roughest part of Crestfall, a den of vice that decent people would never visit. And Wesley Kane was a college student.
In that era, public displays of affection like a man and woman kissing on the street were not socially acceptable. And a man with a fiancée fooling around with another woman would be considered scum in any age.
Rona Langdon immediately flew into a rage. "Kane! Daisy Archer! So this is the ’model son who excels in his studies’ you’re always talking about!"
Daisy Archer quickly hid the photo behind her back and tore it to shreds. As fragments of the glossy paper fell to the floor, she said in a panic, "There must be a misunderstanding."
"What misunderstanding could there be!" Rona Langdon’s confidence suddenly surged, and her voice boomed. "The photo is perfectly clear! Your son was neglecting his studies to go to South Street and doing *that* with some woman! It’s utterly shameless!"
After speaking, she glanced at Vera Xavier again. "I was just wondering how an honest girl like Vera could be so bold as to leave on her wedding day. It turns out she knew about the disgraceful things your son has been up to!"
She then turned to scold Vera. "You silly girl, why didn’t you tell us something so huge happened? To think you were bearing it all alone!"
Vera Xavier lowered her head slightly. "I was afraid of wrongly accusing Wesley Kane and ruining the relationship between our two families, so I..."
The Preston Family and the Kane Family were, strictly speaking, old family friends. However, because Zachary Preston had been ambitious and enterprising in his youth, he had achieved a respectable status by now. The Kanes, on the other hand, had gone into business. The relationship between the two families had faded in recent years, but starting last year, the Kanes began visiting the Prestons frequently.
Vera’s words made her sound considerate and mindful of the bigger picture, but hearing them made Zachary Preston’s heart ache for her. He stood up and declared, "Vera may have grown up in the countryside, but she is my most beloved daughter. I will not allow her to marry a man of poor character."
Rona Langdon seized the opportunity. "That’s right! You’re the ones in the wrong this time! The bride price can be considered compensation for our Vera. We’re not giving it back!"
Daisy Archer didn’t dare to argue with Rona Langdon. Instead, she turned to Vera with a resentful tone. "Vera, it’s not my place to criticize, but you should have just told us about this in private. Did you say it in front of all these people on purpose? Are you trying to ruin our Wesley’s reputation?"
Vera Xavier sneered inwardly. ’I know exactly what kind of person Daisy Archer is from my past life. Petty, spiteful, and she loves to shift the blame.’
’Today, it’s obvious Daisy Archer was the one trying to ruin my reputation and make the Preston Family feel guilty. That way, whether I married into the Kane family or not, the Prestons would feel indebted to the Kanes, making my family easier to manipulate in the future.’
She adopted a wronged tone. "Mrs. Archer, I was just about to speak with you privately. It was you and Mr. Kane who insisted I say it out loud. Just a moment ago, you said you’d stand up for me. Why are you blaming me now?"
Her words made Daisy Archer so angry she nearly fell over backward, but she was left utterly speechless, unable to find a single fault in what Vera had said.
