Chapter 8: Looking for Work

Kai woke up feeling restless. The house was quiet—Thorne had left before dawn for a hunting trip that would take him two days. Lira was still asleep upstairs. Elara was in the kitchen, humming softly while she prepared breakfast.

He came down the stairs. Elara turned when she heard him. Her face lit up with a small, private smile—the kind only he got now.

"Morning," she said. Her voice was warm. She wore a simple green dress that hugged her curves. Her hand rested on her stomach for a second before she moved to pour him tea.

"Morning," Kai replied. He sat at the table. "Thorne gone already?"

"Yes," she said. "He said the deer tracks were good yesterday. He’ll be back the day after tomorrow."

She set the tea in front of him. Her fingers brushed his deliberately. "We have the house to ourselves until Lira wakes up."

Kai took a sip. "We’ll have time later. Right now... I need to think about money."

Elara sat across from him. "Money?"

"I’ve been staying here free. Food, bed, everything. I can’t keep doing that forever. I need work. Something to earn coin so I’m not just a guest."

Elara nodded slowly. "You’re right. Thorne won’t mind—he thinks of you as a friend now—but yes, it’s good to have your own coin."

She leaned forward. "What can you do? You’re strong. You killed that dire wolf bare-handed. People in the village already talk about it."

Kai shrugged. "I’m good with my hands. Fighting, lifting, building. Anything physical. Maybe hunting, chopping wood, helping with farms."

Elara thought for a moment. "There’s always work. Old Man Harrow needs help fixing his barn roof—he’s too old to climb. Pays decent. Or the miller—his wheel keeps jamming. He’s always complaining."

She paused. "Or... the adventurers. There’s a small guild post in Eldor Village, about half a day’s walk. They post jobs for monster hunts, escorting merchants, gathering herbs in dangerous places. Pays the best, but it’s risky."

Kai drank more tea. "Adventurers. Like what Thorne mentioned? Guilds, quests?"

"Yes," Elara said. "Not many here in our little village, but in bigger towns it’s common. You register, take jobs, get paid from the guild coffers or the client. Some people make good money. Some die."

Kai leaned back. "I’m not worried about dying. I’m stronger than I look."

Elara’s eyes flicked to his arms, then lower. A small smile. "I know."

Lira came down the stairs yawning. "Morning, Mom. Morning, Kai."

She sat down and grabbed bread. "What are you talking about?"

"Kai needs work," Elara said. "To earn some money."

Lira looked at him. "You? But you’re... you know. Strong. Dad said you punched a dire wolf dead."

Kai smiled. "Yeah. So maybe something that uses that."

Lira thought. "There’s the woodcutter job. Old Garrick broke his leg last month. His wife is struggling to keep up. They pay per cord chopped. Or the quarry—hauling stone. Hard work, but steady."

Elara added, "Or the merchant caravan. They come through every few weeks. Sometimes they need guards for the road to Eldor City. Pays well if you can fight."

Kai finished his tea. "I’ll start simple. Woodcutting or farm help. Something close so I can stay here."

Elara’s foot touched his under the table. "I like that. Close."

Lira didn’t notice. She was eating fast. "I’m going to the market with Sara. Need anything, Mom?"

"Some salt and herbs," Elara said. "And if you see Widow Mara, ask if she needs help with her garden."

Lira nodded, grabbed her basket, and left.

The door closed.

Elara stood up. Walked around the table to Kai. Sat on his lap without asking.

Her arms went around his neck. "We have the house empty now."

Kai’s hands went to her hips. "You’re not tired from last night?"

She kissed him—slow, deep. "I’m never tired of you."

She ground against him slowly. "But first... tell me about work. What do you really want to do?"

Kai thought while she kissed his neck. "Something that lets me move around. Meet people. Maybe the adventurers guild. See more of this world. Other races, magic, monsters."

Elara pulled back a little. "It’s dangerous. But you’re different. Stronger than anyone here. You could do well."

She kissed him again. "And if you go... I’ll miss you. But I’ll wait. And when you come back... I’ll be here. Ready for you."

Kai lifted her dress. No panties again. She was wet already.

He rubbed her slowly. "I’ll come back. Always."

She moaned softly. "Promise?"

"Promise."

He lifted her, carried her to the kitchen counter. Set her down. Pulled his pants down.

She spread her legs. "Now. Quick. Before Lira comes back."

Kai pushed inside her in one thrust.

Elara gasped. "Yes... just like that."

He fucked her hard and fast. The counter shook. She held onto his shoulders.

"Deeper," she whispered. "Fill me again."

Kai thrust harder. She came fast—shaking, biting his shoulder to stay quiet.

He followed right after. Pumped deep inside her.

They stayed like that for a minute. Breathing hard.

Elara kissed him. "Thank you. I needed that."

Kai pulled out. Cum dripped down her thigh. She wiped it with a cloth, smiling.

"Work," she said. "You should go see Garrick today. His wife will be happy for the help."

Kai nodded. "I will. After I clean up."

They fixed their clothes. Elara went back to the dishes like nothing happened.

Kai went outside. Found Garrick’s house—a small farm on the edge of the village. The barn roof had holes. Wood piles scattered.

Garrick’s wife, Mara, was outside feeding chickens. Older woman, gray hair, tired eyes.

"Morning," Kai said. "Elara said you need help with the barn."

Mara looked up. Surprised. "You’re the stranger who saved Thorne?"

"Yes."

She wiped her hands. "Gods bless you. Yes, the roof leaks. Rain comes in every storm. Garrick can’t climb anymore."

Kai looked at the barn. "I can fix it. Need wood, nails, ladder."

Mara nodded fast. "We have some. Not much coin, but we can pay two silver a day. And meals."

"Deal," Kai said. "I’ll start now."

He worked all morning—carrying planks, hammering nails, patching holes. Stronger body made it easy. Mara brought him water and bread.

By noon the roof was solid.

Mara handed him four silver coins. "More than we agreed. You worked fast. Thank you."

Kai took it. "Happy to help."

He walked back to the house. Elara was waiting at the door.

She pulled him inside. Kissed him hard.

"You smell like wood and sweat," she said. "I like it."

They went upstairs. Quick again—her on top this time, riding him until they both came.

After, she lay on his chest. "You’re staying, right? Even with work?"

"For now," Kai said. "But I want more. Guild. Adventures. Money. Power."

Elara traced his chest. "I’ll help however I can. Just... come back to me."

Kai kissed her. "Always."

Lira came home later. Saw Kai’s silver coins on the table.

"You got work?" she asked.

"Yeah," Kai said. "Fixing barns. Good start."

Lira smiled. "Cool. Maybe you can teach me how to punch like you did to that wolf."

Kai laughed. "Maybe."

Elara watched from the kitchen. Smiled secretly.

The family ate dinner together. Normal. Happy.

But under the table, Elara’s hand rested on Kai’s thigh.

She was his.

And soon, the rest would be too.
