Chapter 85: Agares is ... Dead

***

Two weeks later.

Goro’s Tavern.

City of Midgard.

That night, Silva drank more glasses of beer than the other four in her group. She had finished an entire bottle by herself, and none of them understood what had happened to Silva—why she was drinking so much today.

"What’s wrong?" one of her companions asked.

"Agares... he still hasn’t woken up," Silva replied, slurring her words. freewёbnoνel.com

"So today would be the—"

"It’s been three weeks since he fell unconscious," Silva cut in.

She slammed her glass down on the table, causing several other shot glasses to fall and shatter. Her companions tried to calm her.

"Calm down, Silva. You’ve had too much to drink."

"He’ll wake up. Maybe it’s just that his body’s weak," one of the men said, trying to reassure her.

"Hah?! He conquered 74 floors of this dungeon alone, and you’re calling him weak?!" Silva snapped.

"Go ahead—leave my team and explore this dungeon by yourself! I doubt you’d even make it to floor 60!" she shouted, her face red with rage.

The man flinched, not expecting Silva to be that furious just because he said Agares might be weak. He lowered his head and apologized, but Silva averted her gaze and downed the last of her beer.

When she turned to the side, Silva clearly saw Leon and his party entering the tavern, laughing together. Leon—the one responsible for Agares’s coma.

"I should’ve killed you, bastard!" Silva screamed.

She conjured a fireball in her hand and hurled it at Leon. He was caught off guard, but Cassandra quickly stepped in front of him and summoned a magic shield.

Silva’s fireball struck Cassandra’s shield, causing a magical explosion that tore through part of the second floor, sending patrons fleeing from the tavern in panic.

Leon stood in shock. He saw Silva, drunk and glaring at him with deep resentment—like she bore a personal vendetta.

He knew what he had done was wrong. He hadn’t acted selfishly when he interrupted the Thread of Fate between Cassandra and Agares, but he hadn’t expected Silva to react with such fury.

"I’m sorry about what happened to Agares. But I truly didn’t know he would suffer like that."

"You’re the one who made him suffer!"

Leon went silent. He knew the consequences—forcing the Thread of Fate to break would injure both parties. But the one who suffered the most would always be the subject, not the caster.

Cassandra was fine now—healthy, in peak condition. They had even returned from another dungeon expedition.

But Agares, the subject, had suffered immensely. His memories had been scrambled. His mind was injured, which caused his body to weaken.

Since last week, Milenia had noticed Agares’s condition worsening. She no longer allowed Silva to visit him—for Agares’s own safety.

Only Milenia was allowed to monitor his condition. She had even forbidden her maids or anyone else from entering his room.

She’d placed an ice barrier that would freeze anyone who tried to enter without permission.

Aoi had been in Milenia’s care for a while, mainly for food and rest. Ever since Agares fell into a coma, Aoi had grown lonely and lost.

Because of all this, Silva’s anxiety had grown worse—she had no idea what was happening to Agares. She couldn’t see him herself; she could only ask the guards at Milenia’s estate.

But they only gave her one answer:

He will recover soon.

That wasn’t helpful.

Leon dropped to his knees on the tavern floor, bowing his head. His party members gasped. Cassandra stared at him—it was the first time she’d seen Leon bow in complete surrender.

"I was wrong. I should never have been so selfish."

"You can take my life instead!" Leon cried.

"LEON?!" Cassandra screamed.

He looked up at her.

A man was judged by his word. Leon stood by that principle.

He was guilty. He deserved punishment.

Silva grinned widely. With her light magic, she condensed the energy into a long blade of radiant light in her hand.

Staggering from the alcohol, she walked slowly toward Leon until she was standing right in front of him.

If killing Leon was the only way to relieve her pain, then Silva had no problem doing it.

"Are you sure? Is there anything you want to say?" Silva asked coldly.

"Nothing. I’m sorry."

"A wise man."

Cassandra and the others tried to block Silva, saying she’d have to go through them first if she wanted to kill Leon. Silva, of course, didn’t care.

Silva’s four companions acted quickly, trapping Leon’s party in chains of light. Their superior power made it impossible for Leon’s group to break free.

Silva stepped closer, dragging her light blade along the floor with each unsteady step. When she reached the right distance, she raised the sword and gripped it with both hands.

"Die for Agares!" she screamed.

"ANNOUNCEMENT!" a loud voice echoed above the city sky.

The booming sound halted Silva’s blade mid-swing. She turned around, realizing the voice came from Milenia’s estate.

"That voice... is that Milenia?" Silva asked.

More curious about what was happening at Milenia’s estate, Silva abandoned Leon’s execution and quickly left the tavern.

Not only her party, but Leon’s group and others followed. Goro and Mel stayed behind—they already knew what such an announcement meant.

Someone in the city had died.

Adventurers and residents alike gathered in front of Milenia’s estate, curious about what announcement she had to make—something she wanted the entire city to hear.

"AGARES IS DEAD!"

"I REPEAT, AGARES HAS DIED!"

Milenia emerged from her estate, carrying Agares’s body atop a floating ice crystal bed created with her magic. Her face was mournful, and every step she took exuded a chilling aura.

Some adventurers cheered, eager to spread the news.

Leon looked the most shocked, overwhelmed with guilt. Silva was engulfed in sorrow.

She had met Agares. She had seen his face. She had even held him in her arms.

But she never got the chance to speak to him alone.

That was what broke her. That was the very reason she’d joined the expedition with her mage party—to talk to Agares.

’D-Did I... really kill someone?’ Leon asked, in shock.

Cassandra and the others tried to console him, encouraging him not to fall too deep into despair.

Silva watched Agares, pale and frail, as Milenia carried him to the city cemetery alongside mourners—mostly her maids and guards.

"AGARES!" Silva screamed, collapsing to her knees as tears streamed uncontrollably down her cheeks.

Her companions tried to console her. But the weight of her grief was too much. With no other choice, one of them struck Silva’s neck, knocking her unconscious.

"End your search for Agares. Return to the surface and live your life as normal."

"Agares is dead."
