The Demon Among The Knights-Chapter 51 - 48 – “Shadows at the Threshold”
Smoke curled from the broken walls of the king’s once-pristine garden. Rubble lay strewn across the marble tiles like the remains of a collapsed temple. The skies were beginning to calm—storm clouds retreating slowly, the vortex of demonic energy dissolving like breath on a mirror.

Luci stood with one foot atop the shattered pedestal that used to hold a statue of the kingdom’s founder. His hand, still stained with steam from the king’s corrupted blood, twitched as he flexed his fingers. His chains jangled softly in the breeze, now partially glowing, as if reacting to the overload of demonic energy in the air.

Daniel ran up behind him, panting. "Master Luci! Are you okay? That blast looked like it could level a mountain!"
Luci turned slightly, not even looking over his shoulder. "I’m fine. He wasn’t trying to win. He was trying to survive."
Daniel blinked. "But... he was our king."
"No." Luci’s voice was cool. "Your king died the moment he swallowed my blood."
Brian stepped beside Daniel, shaking his head slowly. "And what stepped out was something none of us ever saw coming."
Brianna, arms crossed, stood on the other side of the crater, studying Luci carefully. "You didn’t just beat him. You stripped the demon out of him. Like it obeyed you."
Luci turned to face her now, eyes narrowing. "Of course it obeyed. It was mine."
A tense silence followed that statement. Even the wind seemed to hold its breath.
Christian, who had sobered up enough to walk in a straight line, arrived last, sword still drawn, his once-flushed face now pale. "Luci," he said seriously, "what are you really?"
Luci looked at the knights gathered before him—the strongest warriors of the realm, all staring at him with a cocktail of awe, fear, and respect.

He thought about lying.
But then, with a half-smirk, he said, "I’m the youngest son of the Devil believe it or leave it."
Gasps broke the silence. Swords were half-raised. Even Brianna tensed.
But Luci didn’t move. "Relax. If I wanted this kingdom dead, I’d have buried it before breakfast. The only reason I’m here is because someone sealed the gateway home."
Brian stepped forward, hand on his hilt. "So you’re not... invading?"
Luci tilted his head. "Nope. Just hiding."
Christian chuckled nervously. "Hiding... in the most heavily guarded kingdom on the continent?"
"Exactly." Luci turned and walked past them, completely unbothered. "Who would be dumb enough to look for me here?"
Daniel followed, still starstruck. "Wait, wait—are you serious? You’re really a demon prince?!"
"I thought you already knew," Luci said casually, grabbing a stray chicken drumstick off a nearby tray. "I mean, who else do you know that drinks lava and eats two hundred chickens in one sitting?"
The others stared as Luci walked calmly back toward the wrecked banquet hall, chains dragging lightly behind him like a quiet warning bell.
But behind their silence was a shared realization:
He wasn’t just dangerous.
He was something else entirely.

Back in the war chamber, panic spread like wildfire.
News had reached the upper courts: the king was unconscious, the royal tower damaged, and a demonic presence had revealed itself at the heart of the celebration.
The nobles gathered quickly. Ministers argued over what to do.
"He should be executed at once!" shouted one, his mustache trembling with rage. "He’s a threat to all of us!"
"Fool," snapped another. "Did you not hear? He saved us from the king’s madness."
"But he is the reason the king went mad in the first place!"
But he is the reason the king went mad in the first place!"
Voices collided in a storm of fear, doubt, and political desperation.
Then the Queen entered.
Dressed in silver robes, her face was unreadable. Her eyes scanned the room once—and the arguing stopped instantly.
She approached the head of the table, pulled out a scroll, and placed it down. It bore the Royal Seal.
"This," she said, "is a decree written by the king before the banquet began. In it, he names Luci as an official guest of the crown. And unless anyone would like to challenge a decree made before his corruption, I suggest we honor it."
Silence.
Not even a cough.
"I will personally oversee Luci’s monitoring," she added. "He is not to be harmed. He is not our enemy."
And then, a pause.
"But if he ever becomes one... we must be ready."
---
That night, under the broken moonlight, Luci sat alone atop one of the castle towers.
He’d stolen an entire roasted goose from the kitchens and was now biting into it like a wild animal. The city lights twinkled far below, peaceful and unaware of how close their world had come to ending.
Daniel climbed up the stairs and sat beside him. "You okay?"
Luci didn’t answer right away. He was staring into the sky.
"You ever think about going home?" Daniel asked.
"Every day."
Daniel hugged his knees. "Do you miss it?"
Luci gave a bitter laugh. "Hell? No. But I miss being myself."
"What do you mean?"
Luci turned to him, eyes sharp. "These chains don’t just hold back power. They hold back who I really am. I’ve been sealed for so long, I don’t even know what I look like without them."
Daniel looked at the chains. "Can I ask something?"
"Go ahead."
"Why did you almost destroy Hell?" 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶
Luci’s face turned unreadable. "Because I hated what it turned me into."
Daniel didn’t press further. The silence between them was surprisingly peaceful.
After a while, Luci said softly, "You’re not afraid of me?"
Daniel shook his head. "Not really. You’re scary, sure. But... you eat chicken and crack jokes. You saved people today. That counts."
Luci smiled faintly. "That’s dangerous thinking, Daniel."
Daniel shrugged. "Maybe. But you saved me a long time ago too, remember? That day in the ruins. When I first found you hiding under the princess’s cart."
Luci’s eyes widened a little. "...I remember."
"You didn’t kill me. You didn’t even threaten me. You just asked if I had food."
Luci snorted. "That sounds like me."
Daniel nodded. "So... until you give me a reason to be afraid, I’m not going to be."
Luci didn’t respond—but something in his expression softened.
For the first time in a long while, he felt something strange.
Not fear. Not anger.
But maybe... trust.
---
Far away, deep in the Forbidden Mountains, a pair of eyes opened.
Eyes that hadn’t blinked in centuries.
A voice, old and cracked with time, whispered from the shadows.
"The blood has been spilled... the gate is beginning to stir..."
A pale hand emerged from black fog, clutching a stone orb carved with ancient symbols. It pulsed with red light.
"The demon has awakened..."
And from the darkness, figures began to move.
Cloaked in robes stitched from shadows, they bowed to their master—an ancient being that had waited lifetimes for this moment.
"Prepare the Sigil Knights," the being said. "The balance is broken. War is coming."
---
Back in the Knight Kingdom, Luci took another bite of goose and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand.
"I need more chicken," he said.
Daniel laughed. "I’ll tell the kitchens."
As Daniel stood and stretched, he looked down at the courtyard below, where knights were still trying to clean up the chaos from earlier.
"Hey, Luci?"
"Hmm?"
"What are you going to do tomorrow?"
Luci leaned back against the battlement wall, arms behind his head, gaze on the stars.
"...Sleep. Eat. Maybe stretch a little."
Daniel grinned. "Stretch?"
Luci’s eyes glinted. "The chains are loosening. Might be time to test how far they go."
And somewhere far below, in the deepest dungeon of the castle... one of the chains tethered to Luci’s power gave a faint, audible crack.
