Chapter 37: The Fate of Extras

Over the course of the next few days, I continued following the same routine. Wake up, train, eat, go to class, eat, train, eat, and sleep. It was kind of repetitive, but I put up with it.

After all, Rome wasn’t built in one day. Getting stronger wasn’t a small time thing. It took time and effort.

Oh and fortunately, I hadn’t gotten paired up with someone out of my league in the past few days during combat classes.

Instead I was paired up with some extras, and one of them just happened to be a face I remembered quite well due to the frequency at which he mocked me.

Muahahaha!

You could guess what happened, I proceeded to beat the shit out of the lil bastard.

It was exhilarating, I tell you.

Also that wasn’t the only change that happened in the past few days. One of my techniques also saw improvement.

Yep, my mastery of Aether reinforcement had reached the master rank. I could feel the next to breakthrough might be mirage steps.

Anyway, today was the day. Today was the start of the weekend, unknowingly, an entire week had already passed since classes started.

Yesterday, instructor Black had briefed everyone about the mission hall, so today was a lot more lively than usual.

In my room, I wore some casuals. A grey t-shirt, and blue trousers. Though the color combination was kinda bad, it didn’t look bad on me, if anything, it only made me stand out more.

"Sigh, what am I going to do with this face?"

’Narcissistic asshole.’ Bubbles practically screamed through our link.

"God, you’re going to make me telepathically deaf." I rubbed my ears.

After I finished getting ready, I left the dorms, and headed for the dome, not without leaving a reflection of course.

Like I said earlier, the campus was pretty lively today. Most cadets weren’t even here for the missions, but for the sake of leaving the institute.

In the dome, I joined the line of students entering the teleportation matrix leading to the mission hall.

The mission hall was general to all students, be it first, second, or third year. The institute made it that way so the students could all interact with each other, and get to build connections.

It soon reached my turn, I stepped into the matrix, and found myself in a massive hall, not unlike the combat hall.

Only it was filled with more youths than I could count. Not to mention, the lots of powerful auras I could feel in the vicinity.

There were many check-in areas, and a massive unfurled scroll, the size of a billboard floating in the air, showing tons of different types of missions.

And also, the area for each year was different. It was a given, if not, there would be problems. Even if the institute wanted the students to interact, having all the three years in one queue, was a disaster waiting to happen.

I silently moved away from the matrix and went to the first year’s area.

There, I went straight to one of the many staffs attending to the students in the check-in area.

"Hello." the lady greeted dryly. "What type of mission would you like?"

’Why the hell does she look like someone who hasn’t slept a wink in forever?’

"Ahem!" I coughed, trying to not make my thoughts visible on my face. "One that’s probably not too dangerous, or preferably, search or procurement missions." I replied.

"Hmmm." the woman nodded, then unfurled the scroll on the counter, and navigated to a certain section.

"Here, these are all search and procurement missions. Choose which you want, and I’ll register it in your name." The woman explained.

I muttered a small thanks, and began scrolling the uhh... scroll.

Search and procurement missions were like that mission I mentioned which Alistair took. These types of missions were mainly to find some rare herb in the wild, or hunt some certain type of beast for it’s body parts.

These types of missions were the simple and more straightforward types. I mean I was never gonna choose a mission like covertly fedding a conflict, or one like, infiltrating some crime underworld.

Believe me there were such missions.

Anyway, scrolling through the missions, I noticed some of them were stamped as taken, but I soon came upon one that was relatively simple, and paid well, a total of 50 points.

It was to secure the heart of a certain beast called, the Bloodlust deer. It wasn’t specified what rank the beast needed to be, so how hard could it be?

A smile slowly curled my lips.

’I could simply just find a kappa ranked one.’

I took my eyes off the scroll, and looked at the lady.

"I choose this one." I pointed at the specific mission.

"Good choice." the woman nodded. "Give me your wrist, I’ll register it for you."

I gave her my left wrist, the one with the band, without hesitation.

I didn’t understand what she did, but a few clicks here and there both on the scroll and on my band, and voila, my name appeared under the mission, and the mission got stamped with a capital ’TAKEN’.

"The mission has now been taken in your name. Make sure you come back before 11:59pm tomorrow." the woman warned.

That was because, the teleportation matrixes were only active between a given set of time, which was only weekends.

That is from 12am on Saturday, to 11:59 pm on Sunday. A total of 48 hours.

Though for me currently, it was already 10am, so I had only 38 hours left. But I had no problem though, after all, the first event would occur in between this timeframe.

"Understood!" I nodded to the lady, before I left the check-in area.

At a side of the mission hall, different from where I had appeared from the campus, were multiple teleportation matrixes layered across the floor, with a few men manning then.

"Hello." I greeted curtly.

"Where are you headed?" one of them asked.

"Bosco city, Kamar continent." I replied.

I watched as the man recalibrate one of the matrixes, to my desired coordinates in just half a minute.

’I definitely got to learn sorcery.’ I filed a note at the back of my head.

Once he was done, I stepped on the matrix, and disappeared.

-----------

Stale air assaulted my sinuses as I appeared in what looked like a dilapidated building at the outskirts of Bosco city.

I had to quickly bolt from the place.

"Ha!"

"Ha! Finally!" I exhaled a sigh of relief as I inhaled the somewhat cool fresh air of the city.

"Damn, did something die in there?"

After regaining my bearings, I decided to head towards the city’s train station.

Of course, this wasn’t actually the city where the event would take place. Like I said earlier, the city was a small city at the northern reach of Kamar. The institute didn’t have any teleportation matrix stationed there.

So instead, the next best thing to do, was go to the the closest teleport point, which was in Bosco city, then take a train to said city.

"I’m most likely the first one here." I said, judging from how the place I had appeared looked like. If someone had appeared there before me, I would have surely noticed.

"Welp, gives me enough time to complete my mission, and start putting everything in place."

-------------

Meanwhile back at the mission hall, about an hour after Damon disappeared, a certain redhead appeared from the matrix designated to the first year’s campus, went to choose a mission, then disappeared into the same matrix Damon had disappeared into.

Not long after that, a golden haired youth appeared and followed the same steps, then came a black haired girl with striking grey eyes, a black haired youth with emerald eyes, a blue haired girl with chestnut eyes, then a white haired girl with blue eyes.

Each of these youths disappeared into the same matrix as Damon shortly after each other, with barely five minutes difference between them.

"Hey is it just me, or do a lot of the top rankers keep disappearing into that same matrix?" a girl asked her group of friends.

"I also saw it too." one of her friends replied.

"Maybe they know something we don’t?" One of the guys in the group offered.

"You know? you might be right."

"If that’s the case then, we better not get left behind." the first girl spoke. The group unanimously agreed with her.

They inquired from the same woman Damon had gotten his mission from, and also took missions in the same city.

’Something must surely be going on.’ they thought as they one by one disappeared into the same matrix.

Little did they know, their curiosity could make them into the unwilling sacrifice, for the protagonist’s character development.

Such was the fate of extras.
