Lady Fang watched her stride out of the room with concern, worrying she might have another outburst like yesterday’s.
She didn’t want her to speak any offensive words that might anger Qian Dog and Grandma Qian, but deep in her heart, she strongly resisted the idea of her beloved daughter marrying Qian Dog.
Pei Qin came out, holding a round-bottom wicker basket with an expressionless face.
She glanced at Lady Chen and Lady Zhu without acknowledging them and went straight to the backyard to gather corn cobs.
In three days, she had to pluck all the cobs in that large pile, weighing more than two thousand pounds.
She wanted to finish quickly so she could go out and find some money.
Qian Dog watched her slender figure, which seemed to carry a strength in it.
The pink color, which might have been a bit vulgar, took on a different charm when worn by her—elegance!
Yes, that was it!
None of the other girls he had seen could compare!
Though some were straightforward, they just didn’t match up to Pei Qin standing before him.
Seeing the smile deepen on his face, Lady Chen felt a surge of joy.
It seemed things were set!
Smiling, she invited Qian Dog and Grandma Qian into the house.
Grandma Qian still didn’t have a clear view and frowned with some dismay.
Wasn’t Pei Qin supposed to serve them tea?
Why was she carrying a basket, presumably to the backyard to prepare firewood?
They had agreed to come over today, and not even the tea had been prepared in advance!?
The house had been tense just before, and there was no chance for tea preparation.
Lady Chen took two steps from the western wing, her face clouded with anger as she whispered an order to San Ya and Si Ya, “Why haven’t you gone to boil the tea yet!”
Si Ya quickly got up and went to the kitchen to make tea.
Lady Chen, with a smile, entered the main room and began introducing Pei Qin to Qian Dog and Grandma Qian, speaking only of her good qualities—how well she cooked, her sewing skills, her efficiency in manual labor, and her strong health, having never fallen ill.
That she had never fallen ill was because Pei Qin had never seen a doctor whenever she was sick; Lady Fang would look for folk remedies instead, and if Pei Qin felt slightly unwell, she’d attend to it herself.
Grandma Qian requested that Pei Qin be called over to have a conversation and to check whether she looked healthy enough for childbearing.
The tea in the kitchen was ready, and Lady Zhu, with extra care, added some white sugar and called on Pei Qin, who was gathering corn cobs in the backyard, to bring it inside.
Pei Qin gave her a mocking glance, “Are you sure you want me to carry it inside?”
Lady Zhu’s eyelid twitched, considering Pei Qin’s impudent demeanor—she wouldn’t dare bring the tea into the main room and splash it all over Qian Dog, would she!?
Pei Qin shot her a look that said ‘you guessed right’ and returned to the western wing with the basket.
Enraged, Lady Zhu turned pale and smacked San Ya on the head, whispering fiercely, “Carry it inside now!”
San Ya pursed her lips tightly and quickly carried the tea with white sugar into the main room.
Lady Chen watched with a darkened expression but then put on a smiling face and said, “Da Ya is just nervous the first time, shy!

This girl is usually quiet and obedient, very sensible!
She’s always busy with chores.
There’s no need to call her; she’s constantly at work, either here or there!”
She praised Pei Qin as the number one girl in the Back Mountain Village!
Grandma Qian didn’t get a chance to speak with Pei Qin and felt somewhat displeased.
At least with the others, expected displays of courtesy like serving tea and sweetly addressing her would occur, but Da Ya of the Old Pei’s House didn’t offer a single word.
But Qian Dog had set his heart on her.
Seeing her son’s interest, Grandma Qian stayed sitting, intending to remain for a meal to sample Pei Qin’s cooking.
Fearing Pei Qin might create another issue, Lady Chen did not dare offer a meal.
Lady Zhu didn’t want them to eat at their expense, and without any meat available, they certainly couldn’t slaughter a chicken.
“Let’s settle the matter like this, and we can sit down for a proper meal another day, ok?” Lady Chen asked Qian Dog with a beaming smile.
Qian Dog’s eyes shifted, aware of the Pei family’s poor circumstances and the lack of preparation.
He felt a bit displeased, yet since he was taken with Pei Qin, he forgave the oversight and after a short while, got up to leave.
Lady Chen and Lady Zhu hurriedly stood to see them out, all the while speaking words of invitation to stay for a meal.
