The Eldest Daughter of a Rural Family-Chapter 619 - The Cousin Who Would Marry No One But Him (2)_1
Chapter 619: Chapter 619 - The Cousin Who Would Marry No One But Him (2)_1
"What’s going on? Hasn’t it been several years, and your cousin still hasn’t gotten married?" Landlord Zhao looked at him in surprise; he had heard a bit about this before.
Yang Boyan shook his head, "My family has always wanted me to marry her."
Landlord Zhao frowned, "So you mean your cousin has been waiting for you for several years now and still hasn’t been married off. She won’t marry anyone but you. As for you..." Not being his own child, he didn’t feel it was his place to say more. His family had an arranged marriage, and yet he was here courting Pei Qian, which was incredibly irresponsible. It was already very fortunate that Pei Qin had let him come back intact.
Seeing him sigh and shake his head, Yang Boyan clenched his teeth, "I have bothered uncle! I will return home today!"
"You’re leaving today?" Landlord Zhao was surprised; it was all too sudden and quick.
Yang Boyan stood up with fists clenched, "I’m going home to break off the engagement!"
Landlord Zhao watched him stride out and quickly ordered someone to help him pack.
Yang Boyan soon left Taiping Town, and he left the Jade Pendant with Landlord Zhao to pass on to Pei Qian.
Holding the Jade Pendant, Landlord Zhao speculated that since Pei Qin had already found out and knew about a cousin who had been waiting for him for many years as his fiancée, she probably wouldn’t demand that he return home to break off the engagement. This Jade Pendant left here... they probably wouldn’t want it either.
However, since he had accepted it, he still sent someone to deliver the Jade Pendant to Pei Qian.
Pei Qian, with red and swollen eyes, came out. She packed all the non-food items Yang Boyan had given her, those she still had, into a small box to be returned to him.
When she saw the delivered Jade Pendant and was told that Yang Boyan had already left, her face turned grim and ugly. She ordered the box to be given to Landlord Zhao’s family to return to Yang Boyan.
Pei Qin came over to look, "Pack everything up, and move it to the storeroom for now!"
Huang Qiu and the others looked at her with questioning eyes; the third miss was so upset, wanting to get rid of and return everything.
Pei Qin turned her head to glance at Pei Qian, "Throw it out after three months."
This would give Yang Boyan a three-month chance and also allow Pei Qian to cool down for three months before she reconsidered the facts.
Pei Qian watched her arrange things without saying a word.
She hadn’t eaten for two consecutive days, and it wasn’t until the Zhongyuan Festival, when she went out to burn paper and offer incense for Lady Fang, that she finally drank two bowls of porridge and started eating again.
Pei Yuan returned to her maternal home to burn paper, and upon hearing the news, she was both angry and heartbroken for her sister; she told Zhao Xiaochen to go back first while she stayed for two more days.
Zhao Xiaochen rested for two days and then went back home for the ancestral worship and offering of incense. But when he saw that she had come to her maternal home and didn’t seem to want to leave, he reluctantly dragged his feet the entire afternoon. Seeing her determined attitude, he had no choice but to head home reluctantly, "When will you return? I’ll tell the family to come and pick you up!"
"In a few days!" There wasn’t much work at home at that time, so Pei Yuan wanted to stay a bit longer.
Zhao Xiaochen was going back to the garrison anyway, so he decided to be generous, "Then stay a few days! Keep Third Sister company well! And talk with your eldest sister too!"
Pei Yuan looked at him gratefully and sent him out the door.
With Pei Yuan there every day, Pei Qin busy with work, and throwing Jiujiu into the mix, Pei Qian quickly acted as if nothing had ever happened. She started teaching Jiujiu to walk and talk, joined Pei Yuan in needlework, and made little clothes for Jiujiu.
Seeing she was cheered up by Jiujiu’s antics, she soon recovered her spirits. After a few days, when the Zhao family came to pick her up, she returned to Qinghe Town.
The village people were still discussing the matter between Pei Qian and Young Master Yang, Zhao Huai’s younger brother-in-law.
However, life in Liu’er Alley passed by quietly.
Soon, the triennial imperial civil service examination was upon them.
Fang Liuming had spent the past few months in intense study, and before the exam, he returned to visit Pei Qian and to seek advice from Mo Heng.
Seeing that Pei Qian had changed a lot, no longer resenting or complaining about him, and seemed calmer, he asked, "Has something happened?"
