The Enhanced Doctor-Chapter 726 The harm of the Dark Industry
"Don't panic, we're about to perform a cricothyroidotomy. You'll do it," Liu Banxia said soothingly after rushing over.
He had never expected the patient to exhibit a new symptom. It was fortunate this all happened in the emergency center. Otherwise, the patient might have suffocated elsewhere.
Liu Yiqing had probably been attempting intubation, a non-invasive procedure, and an intubation kit lay open nearby. Clearly, non-invasive methods were useless when an airway was fully obstructed.
Perhaps it was Liu Banxia's presence that helped calm the recently flustered Liu Yiqing.
He carefully made an incision in the skin, then the cricothyroid membrane, swiftly expanded the incision with curved vascular forceps, inserted a tracheal tube, and removed the inner cannula.
As the inner cannula was removed, the patient's expression improved, and his lungs could fully expand and breathe normally.
"You did very well. Since you've completed the procedure independently, finish up the remaining tasks, and go with the nurse to take him for a CT scan; make sure it's marked urgent," Liu Banxia whispered.
"Teacher Liu, when I examined the throat, I didn't notice any abnormalities. Just now, after discovering the breathing difficulty, I tried to intubate, but the airway was too severely obstructed to insert anything," Liu Yiqing explained.
"That's why I'm praising you. Your hands are steady, and you acted quickly. Of course, it would have been even more perfect if you had alerted me after completing the procedure," Liu Banxia replied.
Liu Yiqing felt helpless. How could they dare perform such a procedure without an attending physician present? Even if successful, they'd probably face disciplinary action.
"Looking at it now, there seems to be a complex issue with his brain. Send him for a CT scan and get the neurology doctors for a consultation. It could potentially be a case of Locked-in Syndrome; let's wait for the test results," Liu Banxia continued.
Liu Yiqing nodded, quickly connected the patient to a ventilator and, with a nurse's assistance, wheeled him towards the CT room.
Liu Banxia wasn't overly concerned about this patient. There was a clear triage system in place, after all. The patient clearly had an intracranial issue, which falls under the jurisdiction of neurology.
Having completed the initial examination, the case was handed off to neurology. If there was a need for a craniotomy, they could directly contact neurosurgery.
Professional conditions should be handled by professional departments. That's truly being responsible.
After giving it some thought, Liu Banxia decided he needed to consult a professional regarding the female patient's situation. He was just a doctor; how could he help them seek justice?
"Dr. Liu, what can I do for you?" Officer Xu asked enthusiastically when the call connected.
"Officer Xu, there's indeed a minor issue. It's regarding one of our patients who ran into a bit of trouble," Liu Banxia began. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎
He then explained the situation.
"Officer Xu, in this situation, should our patient file a report to hold those people accountable and seek justice?" Liu Banxia asked once he finished.
"Ah... situations like your patient's are not isolated incidents. It's a complete industry chain. Most of their targets are those involved in predatory loans or cosmetic procedure loans," Officer Xu explained.
"Well... Currently, the majority of victims appear to be university students. The City Bureau has already assigned people to conduct a corresponding investigation, but there's no conclusion yet."
"How about this: I'll report the situation you described to the City Bureau? They have the clearest picture. Even if a report is filed with me, the cases will be consolidated anyway."
"Hold on a moment, I need to check with our patient first. After all, it's her issue—I can't make that decision on her behalf," Liu Banxia hastily interjected.
"But those people really are despicable. I'm furious; the harm they cause is immense. You wait a moment, I'll contact her and then give you an accurate update."
After ending the call, Liu Banxia was about to dial Xu Yino but noticed Director Fang, who had approached him at some point without him noticing.
"You startled me! When did you come over?" Liu Banxia asked.
"Just arrived. A case? What sort of case?" Director Fang asked with a grin.
"Uh... this matter... I need to keep it confidential for now as it involves patient privacy. Once I have a clear understanding, I'll explain it to you," Liu Banxia carefully replied.
Director Fang nodded with a smile. "I'm not in a rush. Take your time; I have plenty of it."
Liu Banxia felt helpless. Are all news reporters like this? Like sharks that smell blood, once they latch on, they don't let go. You're here to report on the hospital, aren't you? How can you indiscriminately care about other things?
Having no other choice, he could only text Xu Yino. After all, his conversation would be overheard by Director Fang if he made a phone call.
After waiting for about three minutes, Xu Yino's message came back—four words: "Agreed to report."
Liu Banxia let out a sigh of relief. That settles it. It counts as getting authorization.
"Now, you should tell me what's going on, right?"
After Liu Banxia finished informing Officer Xu, Director Fang spoke up, incidentally also pouring him a glass of water.
Clearly, he was ready to listen patiently.
"It's really nothing much, just the underground black market for selling eggs," Liu Banxia said in a low voice.
"What I'm about to say, just treat it as a popularization of basic medical knowledge. As for whether you can interview anyone or anything, you'll have to ask the police. By the way, weren't you guys supposed to leave?"
"If there's news, we can stay a few more days. Go on," Director Fang said.
"This kind of underground black market is very clandestine, but for the women who sell their eggs, it causes extreme damage to their bodies," Liu Banxia said.
"Ovarian enlargement, premature ovarian failure, infertility—these are all very common consequences. More serious cases can lead to infections in the pelvic, abdominal, or thoracic cavities, threatening their lives."
"But I'd only heard about it before, or glimpsed it on the TV news. From what Officer Xu was implying, it seems this industry chain is quite large."
"Well... I heard from others that a special task force is investigating this. Anyway, you can think it over yourself. Whether it's feasible or not, wait until the people from the City Bureau arrive, then you can inquire further. Or communicate with your leaders and the leaders here."
Director Fang nodded. "I'll handle these matters. But I'm quite curious; as doctors, do you always deal with situations like this in this way?"
Liu Banxia shook his head very calmly. "Much of the time, our attitude is 'if it doesn't concern me directly, I won't get involved.' Unless it's a situation that legally requires reporting, we generally don't interfere with a patient's privacy; that's doctor-patient confidentiality."
"It's just that this situation is too outrageous. From what I've gathered so far, our patient was deceived; the other party completely failed to inform her of the dangers of egg retrieval."
"Well... if it weren't for all the trickery and deception, they probably couldn't harm anyone. But whatever the reason, it's a very inhumane act."
"Anyway, I'm just upset. Whether it's about seeking justice for our patient, upholding social justice, or frankly, just my own indignation, I feel this group of people needs to be dealt with. They're utterly unscrupulous, and in the future, they could cause significant social unrest and create societal risks."
"Let's put it this way: most of the time, they buy eggs for surrogacy, right? Otherwise, these eggs have no other use. But in the black market, there's no way to trace where these eggs end up."
"So what about in the future? Two people in love could turn out to be half-siblings from the same mother or the same father. Even if the blood relationship is more distant, it still poses a significant societal danger. Do you see what I'm saying?"
Director Fang frowned. Thinking carefully, that was indeed the case. This could create significant moral and ethical dilemmas for society.
"Another impact is the fertility issue of the women whose eggs are taken," Liu Banxia continued.
"Improper or overly frequent egg retrieval will overstimulate the ovaries. Wanting to have children is one thing; being able to have them is another entirely."
"Social pressure is already immense, and the birth rate is declining year by year. If those who want to have children can't conceive then, wouldn't that make things even worse?"
"Anyway, I just think this whole thing is too outrageous. Because this isn't as simple as cheating someone out of a bit of money or tricking them into buying some health supplements; in a sense, this is tantamount to taking lives."
"And they often cloak themselves in a veneer of respectability. Ugh... the more I talk about it, the angrier I get. Anyway, it's just too outrageous. For medical professionals to do this... I don't know how they can face their own conscience or their families."
"Dr. Liu, I must say, I'm genuinely interested in this situation now. Let me contact the station and see if we can produce a series of reports on this," Director Fang said before moving off to the side to make a call.
Liu Banxia blinked. What's going on? He was just venting a bit, expressing his own views; how did Director Fang get so hooked? Haven't television stations done some programs like this before? Well, no point thinking too much about it. Anyway, after that rant, he felt much more relieved.
At this time, Xu Yino came downstairs.
"Teacher Liu, the patient has gone to the gynecology department for an examination. I've already spoken with her. Considering the police might get involved next, should we move her to a private room?" Xu Yino asked.
Liu Banxia nodded. "That's a good idea, but you'll have to talk to Sister Li about it. We've had a lot of patients recently, so we'll need Sister Li to help coordinate."
"Thank you, Teacher Liu." After Xu Yino said this, she was off running again.
Liu Banxia shook his head helplessly. He knew this was Xu Yino's compassion getting the better of her. Occasionally, she'd encounter a situation like this, feel a patient was very pitiful, and want to help them out. He just hoped it wouldn't happen too often; otherwise, it would be difficult to manage.
