Chapter 170: The Play - Part One

Kael planted his feet firmly on the forest floor, and the fur around his waist shifted with his stance. His eyes locked onto Lyra’s, burning through the Veil, trying to read her intent. πšπ—Ώπ—²πžπš π•–π›π—»π—Όπ―π•–πš•.πšŒπ—Όπ—Ί

The stage mist curled around them, casting an otherworldly glow.

"You shouldn’t have come here," Kael said, his voice low but sharp and commanding enough, "This forest doesn’t welcome strangers, especially not your kind,"

Lyra lifted her chin defiantly, arching a brow in character, "My kind?" she repeated smoothly, but her voice was edged with venom, "And what exactly is my kind, oh great Alpha? Weak? Foolish? Unworthy of standing in your precious forest?"

"I don’t care what your kind is called, " Karl’s jaw tightened, warning slick in his voice, You’ve trespassed into my lands, and now you will leave before I decide to make you,"

"Or... maybe I came here for a reason," she said, stepping closer. Her eyes glittered above the Veil, challenging him openly, "Maybe I came for you,"

Kael took a step toward her, and the audience gasped at the growing intensity, "Do not play games with me, Seer. I will not tolerate it!"

Lyra smirked, brushing her fingers against a branch. She flicked it toward him and Kael blocked instinctively, and the brush of wood against his forearm echoed across the stage, making the audience flinch.

"You think you can intimidate me with your strength?" she taunted, and laughed dryly, "I’ve seen Alpha heirs like you before. You bark, but you do not bite,"

"I do not need to bark, and you will learn that soon enough," He stepped closer, forcing her back a step. Between them, they felt the spark, and it wasn’t because of the play, "Every move you make, every word you speak, it tells me you’re hiding something. And I will uncover it,"

"I’m hiding nothing," she said, though the Veil did not hide the smirk creeping across her lips, "Except perhaps the truth that you will never see coming,"

"Enough riddles. Step aside, or you will regret it."

"I don’t think so," she replied, spinning lightly on her heel, "You think this forest protects you? You think your pack and your title matter here? Out here, it’s just you and me. And I’ve always been stronger than the stories say,"

"If strength is all you have, then let’s test it. I’ll see if a mere seer can survive a single encounter with Kael of the Crescent Moon pack,"

Lyra’s lips curved into a dangerous smile, "Then let’s begin."

She lunged forward, swinging at him. Kael countered with smooth precision, blocking her blow, then twisted his body to force her off balance. Each strike, parry, and dodge was timed perfectly, theatrical enough for the audience to gasp, and just skillful enough to feel real.

"You’re reckless," Kael growled, as he circled her. "And proud. Two things that will get you killed if you ever meet a real predator, and you just met him!"

"Better to die proud than to live afraid of a shadow!" she shot back, stepping closer till their faces were inches apart now. "You think you intimidate me because of your pack? Because of your name? I fear nothing, nothing but someone weaker than themselves hiding behind power!"

Standing this close, Zeke stared into her eyes, wishing he could decipher who this person was. There was a reason she was wearing this mysterious mask, and why her aura and scent were unrecognisable.

Kael’s lips twitched in something between irritation and amusement, "You speak like a fire without a flame. I see the smoke, but I do not feel the burn. Show me your strength, Seer. Prove that words are not all you wield,"

Lyra’s hands flashed to a small dagger at her waist which was all part of the play’s props, and she feigned a strike.

Kael blocked effortlessly, twisting her wrist in a practised move, forcing her back another step.

"You underestimate me," She hissed at him between claws, "You think your skills and titles are enough. But you’ve never faced someone who can see what comes before it arrives!"

Kael’s eyes narrowed at her words, the tension between them palpable, "Then show me," he growled, stepping closer, till she could feel his breath on her skin, "Show me if you are nothing but words, or something more,"

Lyra smirked, as she ran her fingers along the edge of her veil, pulling it slightly to the side just enough to taunt him even further. She loved the look of keen curiosity and pure enchantment in Zeke’s eyes, "Perhaps I am something you cannot comprehend, Alpha," She whispered.

"Who... what are you?" he asked, his tone dripping with intrigue, though he kept it masked as part of Kael’s character since it was also part of it.

Lyra stepped back and lifted her hands. The silver light caught her dress as she did a graceful pirouette, "You’ll find out soon enough," She said, with the scene about to end.

This is the part where the curtains were supposed to close, and Ava’s timing was more than perfect. The lights dimmed as she slowly pulled them away from Theo.

Theo quickly darted toward the alcove behind the flat. In one fluid motion, she stepped into shadow, leaving only a faint shimmer where she had stood. And with the help of the veil distorting her presence, it looked almost as if she had vanished.

Kael remained in the centre of the forest stage, his breath coming out very fast.

The audience gasped, entranced, thinking it was part of the play. Zeke’s breath slowed as the curtains finally closed, but inside, his mind raced. Who the hell was that? And why did every instinct in him scream he should know her?

Backstage, everyone was confused and in full apprehension.

The next scene was with Heather, who had no choice but to take up her old role again.

Everyone wouldn’t stop talking about the mysterious lady in silver who had taken over at Lyra. No one knew a person like her at Gravemont. Her height, shape, energy, and hair were all new and simply mysterious.

They couldn’t wait to watch her again.

But some people weren’t so happy about this new... development.

"We need to find her!" Jocelyn snapped backstage, glaring at everyone like they were behind everything, "I would not have some strange figure do as they please,"

"But this is a nice development," Raina said, stepping out from behind, "With the ruined dresses, it was impossible to portray Lyra as she truly is. But this... person has saved us the need for us to give excuses for the delays in Lyra’s character. How about we just wait till the end of the play before we figure out which of the Luna girls she is?"

"No!" Jocelyn wasn’t hearing any of it, "Everything that happens on that stage should have gone by me, first. We’ll search every inch of this hall and find her. She will not play Lyra any longer,"

"Then...who will?"

Jocelyn raised her chin defiantly, "I will,"
