Chapter 250: Sounds Suspicious

Damien didn’t have time to solve any domestic disputes, not at the time. He was a busy person, and although his raid should be canceled, based on what he had heard from Lane the night before, no one else knew it yet. Thus, Damien had to act as if he were also unaware, and come early to handle all the paperwork. The plus of this situation was that he’d probably get to leave work early that day...

The minus was that he had to leave Clara and Lane in the apartment. Alone.

Well... Although it was far from great... It’s not like they would kill each other... right?

They didn’t, actually. After Damien left, Lane just ignored the woman’s presence, and threw himself on the couch in the living room, turning on the TV.

Except that Clara wouldn’t let him watch it in peace. She walked over, stopping right in front of Lane, blocking his view. At first, Lane just tried to keep on watching the news, even with a large portion of the screen blocked...

But eventually, he let out a sigh, and turned it off. "What do you want?"

"Where were you last night?" Clara started questioning him again.

Because of course she did.

"Somewhere." Lane shrugged his shoulders. "You don’t need to know."

"Sounds suspicious."

"Not your problem. Damien knows."

Clara paused for a moment. Indeed, when she asked Damien last evening, before he went to bed the first time, he did say he had an idea.

Not that it sounded certain in any way, or reassuring.

"Does he know the truth, though?" she pressed.

"Ugh..." Lane groaned, brushing his hair back. "No, he has absolutely no idea. I’ve actually been at an orgy, fucking with a thousand guys and girls. Happy now?"

"...What?" Clara blinked, taken aback. Yes, he was suspecting Lane of doing something indecent, possibly cheating on her brother, but what he had said just now was simply ridiculous! Unbelievable! "Are you mocking me right now?"

Lane let out a mirthless chuckle in response. "Oh, congratulations! So you can still at least pick up on that!"

"Just what the... I am asking you seriously-"

"And I’ve been answering you seriously," Lane snapped back. Well, it wasn’t entirely the truth, but... "I’ve told you that Damien knows where I was. But you just don’t want to believe me, now do you? Not unless my answer matches your stupid suspicions."

"Well, if you were to show me evidence..."

"And why should I do that? It’s my private business. YOU DON’T NEED TO KNOW. So, fuck off, will you?"

"Hah!" Clara sneered. "Does Damien know what kind of person you are?"

"...He knows more than you think." Perhaps not everything, but enough to understand who Lane was. "Do you think he’s an idiot, who wouldn’t know whom he’s dating?"

"It’s not only idiots that get fooled by their lovers," Clara pointed out solemnly, her expression dark. She was probably thinking about her mother... That had been taken advantage of for years.

And she had a point this time. "That’s true," Lane had no choice but to agree...

Perhaps he shouldn’t have, though, because it set her off again. "So you’re admitting to it, then? That you’re cheating on my brother?"

"...You’re insane." Lane was almost rendered speechless. "I just agreed with your statement! I’ve heard about your father, and I’ve also seen people get cheated on by their partners. But it has nothing to do with me!"

They both went silent for a while, measuring each other with their eyes.

"I still don’t trust you." Clara was still skeptical.

"That’s your problem."

"I don’t like you."

"But your brother does!"

"I won’t accept you."

"So what?" Lane rolled his eyes. Seriously, was she a broken record or something. "Are you going to ask me to break up with him or something?"

Clara went silent for a moment, pressing her lips and furrowing her brows, as if she was truly giving it a though. Eventually though, she muttered, "No, that wouldn’t work..."

Well, at least she was smart enough to understand that much.

But she still refused to move from her spot between Lane and the TV.

"So, are you just going to stand here all day?" Lane asked. Of course, he could just go back to his apartment, where Clara wouldn’t be able to disturb him, but he didn’t want to leave her in Damien’s place alone. Who knows what stupid ideas might come to her mind? Such as...

"I think I’m going to move in," Clara suddenly announced.

"Move in? Move in where?"

"Here, of course!"

...Yup, she must have completely lost her mind!

"Yeah, nope. Not happening!"

"Why not? There are free rooms here!" Clara smirked.

Lane just stared at her blankly.

Then, he got up, grabbed her by the shoulders, lifted up, and carried toward the front door. He opened it with his telekinesis, put her down outside the door, and closed it in her face without a word.

Enough was enough. Lane tried to tolerate her, since he was Damien’s sister and all, and the man cared about his family (with the exception of his father, of course) a lot... But she was just too much. She was extra sensitive because of her experience growing up, but still! There was a limit to how understanding Lane could be due to her background. It was as if he were to suspect everyone to be like the Allens, cold and calculating, and only interested in how they could benefit from others!

He muted the doorbell that was ringing mercilessly, and threw himself back on the couch. He was no longer in the mood to watch TV, so he just played on his phone for a while, as he waited to see if Clara could get back in, which she didn’t - Damien didn’t give her the passcode, it seemed, which made Lane very happy! - and then went upstairs to get his laptop. Since he had nothing better to do anyway, he should go through all the reports he had received recently...

And perhaps give some thought as to what he wanted to do with this secret organization of his, now that his life had changed so much...
