The Guide is Actually a Body-Switching Esper [BL]-Chapter 305: Paired Up
Chapter 305: Paired Up
Damien’s matching rate test with Ethan wasn’t rigged. Ethan and the Allens hadn’t rigged the first attempt... While Lane failed to rig the re-take.
The result? Damien and Ethan were confirmed to have 93% compatibility, and were instantly paired up...
It was the worst. Although Lane knew there was a possibility they would be paired up from the moment Ethan had walked through that damned door and announced that he would be joining the team (or, well, it was Section Leader White who had announced it, but that was not the point ), the current situation... was far beyond his expectation. freewebnσvel.cøm
93% matching rate? Just what were the odds? Anything above 70% was already good. Above 80% was fairly rare. And above 90%? That was considered ’perfect’ compatibility. Yes, Lane himself had even better compatibility with Damien’s sister, Samantha, but still! To think that Ethan and Damien...
"Do you believe it now?" Ethan asked Lane with a smug smile plastered all over his face, as Lane stared blankly at the disgusting numbers on the screen. "I have such a perfect compatibility with Team Leader... It must be fate!"
Lane didn’t even spare him a glance. Primarily because if he were to see this fucker’s face now, he wouldn’t be able to stop himself to bash it in until Ethan’s own mother wouldn’t be able to recognize him, and no healer would be able to put him back together... But it would be too troublesome to dispose of him now. It was better to hold back for now, and look for an opportunity earlier...
"But I must say, I’m a bit surprised," Ethan continued, not scared by Lane’s twitching eyes in the slightest. "I thought that the two of us would have a higher matching rate. 37% is a rather low compatibility..."
Of course it was low. Much lower than it should have been. After all, that test had been rigged... When Lane had gone to pick the liquid Mana stone with the machine operator, he hypnotized the poor guy, and polluted the fresh Mana stone with his own guiding. Otherwise, if it wasn’t for having such a plan, why would he leave Damien alone with Ethan to wait until he and the operator were back? Unfortunately, it seemed that Ethan suspected something was wrong, and forced Lane to switch places with Damien for the second test, thus ruining his plans... And for the third test, they all went to the storage room to pick the Mana stone together, thus ruining Lane’s chances to mess with the test again.
It wouldn’t do Lane any good to admit he tried to rig the test, though, so all that he could do now was to (temporarily) accept his failure and play dumb. Ethan had no proof that Lane picked a polluted Mana stone on purpose, and if anyone asked, then the machine operator would take Lane’s side!
It was hardly a satisfactory result, but with Ethan and Damien having been tested twice with exactly the same result, there was no more room for him to protest any further.
"Well," Lane shrugged his shoulders in response to Ethan’s comment. "I’ve always known we’re not compatible. If you thought otherwise... Then perhaps you’re not as good of a Guide as you thought you were," he threw Ethan a wide, fake smile.
Ethan returned a smile, equally fake, "Or perhaps it is because it’s been so many years. You were nothing but a powerless F-ranker back then, it’s only natural that guiding you felt effortless."
"Hmph." Lane scoffed, rolling his eyes. "Whatever you want to tell yourself."
But Ethan wasn’t done yet. Calling Lane a ’powerless F-ranker’ might not have stung him much, but there was something that could deal him a bigger blow. And that was...
"It doesn’t matter anyway," Ethan smiled with a light shrug. "Even if we had great compatibility, I wouldn’t have time for you, as I am Team Leader Lennox’s main Guide from now on!"
Lane’s face fell, his eyes twitching ominously.
Right. With Ethan’s S-rank and his 93% matching rate with Damien, he was immediately appointed as Damien’s main Guide. Damien might have already had Eloise as his main Guide... But how could her A-rank and 81% compatibility possibly compare? Even if Damien didn’t want to, it would be hard for him to refuse...
And that was IF Damien didn’t want to. Which Lane wasn’t quite certain about. For an Esper, to find a Guide with such a high compatibility... What Ethan had said earlier about ’fate’, as ridiculous as it sounded, wasn’t that far from the truth. At least some people believed it, that finding a perfect match was ’destiny’. Lane naturally thought it was all just bullshit...
But whether he believed it or not was not the point. Destiny or not, a good quality guiding gave an Esper immense pleasure... And with near-perfect compatibility, the experience was truly ecstatic, nearly otherworldly. As an Esper who had met a near-perfect match before, Lane knew it very well. Of course, that didn’t necessarily mean that anything would happen... But it would definitely be a great opportunity for Ethan to change Damien’s perception on him, and get in his good graces. And yes, Damien was actually a weirdo who liked Lane’s guiding despite their low compatibility, and the tyrannical way Lane’s guiding felt...
But still. The fact that Ethan, who was almost certainly after Damien, was now paired up with the man, made Lane uncomfortable.
And as if to put the final nail in the coffin, Ethan turned to Damien, suggesting with a smile, "Team Leader Lennox. Should we go to the Guiding Center to have our first session together?"
Lane slowly turned his head toward Ethan, staring at the man with his eyes wide, looking as if he might strangle the man at any moment. It didn’t escape Ethan’s attention, as he shifted around uncomfortably, a droplet of cold sweat emerging on his forehead, but he still maintained a calm front, keeping his eyes on Damien.
"There’s still over half an hour left before 11 AM," he just added, before Damien could refuse him. "Since we’re going to enter a few dungeons, it would be good to receive guiding beforehand, no?"
