Chapter 306: Eavesdropping

"...Let me go inside with you."

Lane stood in the door to one of the private guiding rooms in the Association Headquarters’ Guiding Center, blocking them from closing, and refusing to move an inch. The reason? Because Damien and Ethan, who had just been tested to have a near-perfect compatibility, were going to have their first guiding session inside!

Was he being unreasonable? Yes, of course! But since when did Lane care about things like that? He didn’t want to leave Damien and Ethan alone in one of the rooms which were often treated like a more subtle version of a love hotel! Not that he didn’t trust Damien, but...

"Go away," Ethan argued back, trying to push Lane out, and failing miserably. Although he was by no means weak - he was well trained in combat, and exercised regularly, keeping his muscles nicely toned - he was still just a Guide, he couldn’t compete with Lane’s Esper’s strength, no matter how hard he tried. "Just because he’s your boyfriend, that doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want. We’re at work now!"

"So what?" Lane shrugged his shoulders. "There’s no rule that says that no third party can’t enter the room during a guiding session, is there? Damien has no problem with me being here, right?" Lane smiled at his boyfriend, who was standing on the side, rubbing his furrowed forehead.

"But I do!" Ethan protested.

"I don’t care!" Lane responded, glancing at the clock on the wall. Five minutes had already passed since their little argument at the door started. He just needed to last a bit longer... Just so that there wasn’t enough time left for them to have a guiding session, and the two of them would head to the parking garage to go on inspections. Of course, that was just a temporary solution... But as long as he made sure that Ethan suffered an accident before he had another opportunity to have a guiding session with Damien, everything would be okay!

...Unfortunately for him, things wouldn’t quite go his way, as Damien finally spoke up, "Lane... Let it go, please."

"...Huh?" Lane gave Damien a blank stare.

"We don’t have time for this now. We have to go on inspections soon."

That was precisely the point!

"Lane, I’m sorry, but to join the session, you need to have permission from both parties..." Damien glanced at Ethan, his frown deepening, "And it seems that Wagner is uncomfortable with your presence..."

Lane clicked his tongue, crossing his arms on his chest. "I don’t care."

"Lane."

Damien’s emerald eyes met with Lane’s grey. They looked at each other for a long while...

Then, taking advantage of this moment of distraction, Ethan shut the door, slamming it right in Lane’s face, and immediately locking it.

Lane took a step back, rubbing his nose. His face didn’t hurt, not really - he was an SS-ranker, how could a normal door slam possibly harm him even in the slightest?

But the fact that he was out here, while Ethan and Damien were inside, ALONE, made his chest squeeze uncomfortably. He had known from the start he wouldn’t have liked it, which was why he tried to fight it so hard... But he hadn’t expected it would hit him THIS hard.

He pressed his ear against the door, trying to listen to what was going on inside... But that damned thing was soundproofed. Even with his superior Esper senses, he could barely hear an incomprehensible mutter...

Lane wasn’t just a normal SS-ranker, though (if there was even such a thing as a ’normal’ SS-ranker, considering how rare they were!). He was an SS-ranker with multiple plundered abilities! And one of those abilities was enhanced hearing! He quickly glanced around, and after confirming that the coast was clear, and with his ear at the door, activated the ability. With this, combined with his already superior hearing, the room’s soundproofing couldn’t stop him from eavesdropping successfully!

And the moment he did, he instantly froze, his breath dying in his lungs, only his eyes twitching madly.

"...Are you sure you don’t want to?" Ethan’s voice asked in a seductive whisper. "I’m a Guide, I can give you things he can’t... Have you ever tried having sex during a guiding session?"

"Your question is highly inappropriate. Those are my private affairs," Damien responded firmly.

Ethan, however, wasn’t going to give up so easily. "I don’t mean to pry... But Team Leader, you seem like a top to me."

"...What?"

"In bed, I mean."

Damien didn’t answer. Whether he was confused as to what ’top’ meant, or simply had no desire to continue the conversation, or both, Lane didn’t know. Ethan must have deduced something from his expression, though, because he continued,

"Lane doesn’t let you top, does he?"

"Our relationship is none of your business," Damien shot him down immediately, but it only made Ethan chuckle.

"So he doesn’t," he said. "I thought he wouldn’t. Even if you asked, he would surely refuse... Ah, perhaps you already did?" he asked, his tone suddenly turning compassionate. "Well, then you know it very well yourself. He’s a proud top, and has no interest in switching..."

"Not that there’s anything necessarily wrong with it. He most certainly is... well-equipped for that, if you know what I mean... And he was already doing well years ago, so I assume he must be so much better at it now," he added after a long silence. "It’s just that... It’s one thing if he were to date a definite bottom. It’s all about compatibility. But if he wants to date another top and still won’t switch? Isn’t that selfish?"

"...Please mind your words," Damien finally couldn’t take it any longer, and reproached Ethan. "Those are our private affairs. It’s not something you should even speculate about."

"I apologize, I didn’t mean to be rude." Ethan didn’t sound apologetic at all. "I didn’t mean to intrude on your private life... I just want to extend an offer. Because, unlike Lane, I like being the bottom..."

"You should think about it carefully," he added, ending the topic. "I can give you something Lane never would be able to..."
