The Happy Farmer Wanderer-Chapter 39 Flying Kites_1
"Is your dad around?" Li Qing asked.
Over the phone, Hu Pangpang spoke with some annoyance, "That old man of mine is useless."
"It was his idea to invite Wu Xingxing over to visit, but what does he do? Hangs around the house for a bit and then takes off again. Can’t even get through to him on the phone now, I bet he’s disappeared."
Hu Youyu’s sneaky movements made Li Qing realize that his situation might indeed be quite bad this year.
After a moment of thought, he said, "Just wait for me a bit longer, I’ll come over."
Hu Youyu had come back for a short while yesterday, but Li Qing didn’t know if Yu Lan had found the chance to talk about his problems; he had to go and ask.
After hastily preparing himself a lunch, it was only after eating that Li Qing rushed to the Hu Youyu’s house.
As soon as he arrived at the door, he heard a burst of cheerful laughter.
Clearly, it was Wu Xingxing’s voice.
Stepping into the doorway, Li Qing saw Wu Xingxing running barefoot across the spacious courtyard of the Hu family’s home.
Looking up, it turned out she was flying a kite.
Her hair flew lightly, her white dress fluttering in the wind, much like a joyful butterfly.
This carefree manner stirred a wave of envy in Li Qing.
He watched quietly, his gaze serene, even ignoring the undergarments inadvertently revealed.
"She’s very pretty," a gentle voice sounded beside his ear.
Li Qing turned to look and saw Yu Lan had approached without him noticing.
Her hair was piled high, revealing her fair and slender neck.
Dressed in a light blue body-hugging long dress, her curves were perfectly outlined, making her figure appear especially voluptuous.
Li Qing nodded, "But she lacks a certain charm compared to you, Auntie."
The way Yu Lan was dressed today totally fit the image of an elegant lady in Li Qing’s mind.
With a delicate necklace around her smooth, fair neck, she would indeed look every bit the noblewoman.
This sudden compliment caused Yu Lan’s cheeks to flush slightly, "I... how can I compare with her? She’s youthful and lively while I am faded and aged. Though our ages are not so different, our circumstances certainly are."
"Circumstances can be changed," Li Qing glanced again at Wu Xingxing, "Her carefree look is indeed quite enviable, especially since I just finished cutting half an acre of wheat this morning, it makes me all the more envious."
Yu Lan laughed, "Let the two of them play, you come inside and have a seat."
He was about to nod when Wu Xingxing suddenly spotted him from afar. She handed the kite off to Hu Pangpang, who was doing odd jobs, and ran over, out of breath, grabbing Li Qing’s arm, "Qingzi, come on, play with us!"
"Then you two go play; I’ll go get you some fruit!" Yu Lan said with a smile.
Li Qing could only nod. He was somewhat resistant to Wu Xingxing’s affectionate gesture.
If this were anywhere else, he would quite like it, but this was the Hu family home.
Compared to Wu Xingxing, what he was really concerned about was Yu Lan now.
If Hu Youyu dared withhold his money, Li Qing would sleep with his wife.
"Little fatty, quickly let the little rascal have a go; you’re so clumsy you can’t even fly a kite high," Wu Xingxing called out.
Li Qing was speechless, "Since when did I become a rascal?"
Wu Xingxing gave a sly smile, tilted her head towards Li Qing, and whispered, "Don’t pretend, I can tell."
Li Qing was suddenly at a loss.
It made sense for Yu Lan to call him a little rascal.
But he hadn’t had a single improper thought about Wu Xingxing, let alone done anything; how had he suddenly become a rascal?
"Do you know that little fatty was getting handsy with me?" Wu Xingxing asked through clenched teeth.
Li Qing repeatedly shook his head and feigned shock, "He’s already getting handsy, and you haven’t even married him yet?"
"What marriage? I haven’t agreed to anything yet, so don’t spout nonsense." Wu Xingxing immediately said with a stern face, "I heard him on the phone, and you’re still pretending! Just keep pretending!"
Li Qing inwardly cursed in dismay.
Hu Pangpang, what a lousy teammate.
When he makes a call, can’t he at least find somewhere private?
"...You must have heard wrong, I didn’t tell him to lay a finger on you!" Li Qing said with solemn righteousness.
If he admitted to such a thing, he’d be just as crazy as Hu Pangpang.
Wu Xingxing huffed, "Little hooligan, you play your part quite well."
Li Qing slowly let out the kite string, not daring to utter another word.
In this case, the more you explain, the worse it gets; denial was the best strategy.
"I didn’t expect you to be so skilled at flying kites." Wu Xingxing commented.
Li Qing felt a bit proud of himself; as a child, he could fly a kite made out of an entire sweater, let alone this one.
"I heard from little fatty that you’ve been harvesting wheat these past two days. Need help?" Wu Xingxing asked, moving closer.
Li Qing glanced at her pristine white dress, "Working in the fields is not really for you, I think."
"What are you talking about? I can do fieldwork, too, okay?" Wu Xingxing retorted with a pout.
"I’m not saying you can’t, it’s just I don’t have much wheat, and it’ll be done in a few days." Li Qing tried to explain.
Wu Xingxing snorted in displeasure, "I think you’re just looking down on me."
"Not at all, your clean dress would be ruined after one trip to the fields," Li Qing said.
Wu Xingxing casually said, "No worries, I brought extra clothes. I can change into them later. Your family won’t mind the extra water for laundry, right?"
"No, that’s not it. You’re a guest at the Hu Family; it’s hardly appropriate for you to help me with the harvest!" Although Li Qing was somewhat hopeful, the cons outweighed the pros, so he decided against it.
"What’s the big deal? I’m bored just sitting around anyway," Wu Xingxing said nonchalantly.
At that moment, Hu Wei joined them, "What are you two talking about?"
"Little fatty, I’m planning to help Qingzi with the wheat harvest. Are you coming?" Wu Xingxing ordered more than asked.
"Ah... me?" Hu Wei hesitated.
Wu Xingxing snorted contemptuously, "Your good buddy is working in the fields, but all you do is hang out with me. What kind of good buddy is that? It’s settled, then."
With that, she flipped her hair and went into the house on her own.
Hu Wei’s face drooped as he said to Li Qing, "Qingzi, are we really doing this?"
"Try to stop her, my bit of work isn’t important," Li Qing said.
He knew Hu Pangpang had barely done any farm work in his life.
"Oh," Hu Wei breathed a sigh of relief, "Qingzi, she’s still not mad at me. What should I do?"
"You’re really cowardly. Just barge in when she’s changing clothes or going to the bathroom. I don’t believe she won’t get mad!" Li Qing said irritably. "Also, next time you make a call, try to be a bit more discreet."
She’s already overheard your plans, and here you are, plotting to get handsy.
However, Li Qing was starting to have trouble understanding Wu Xingxing’s thoughts now.
It seemed like she truly was into kite flying...
