Chapter 51: Highgrove Village

"Really? You’ll take me with you? Yes! Thank you! I promise to tell my father to reward you when I get back home!" Tyria hugged Gwen and squealed with joy.

"Yeah, yeah. Like I said, don’t cause any trouble. If you run away again, I’m not looking for you. Also, I’m just letting you know this right now. We’re adventurers, which means we don’t have access to the fancy stuff a woman of your status would. So, I better not hear any complaining from you one bit. If I do, you’re gone!"

Tyria nodded, accepting Kai’s demands. She was too scared to be on her own. Besides, she thought he was very handsome, so listening to a man like him wouldn’t be a problem for her.

Kai made dinner for Tyria as he assumed she would be starving, which she was. After that, they set up their tents and went to sleep.

---

"So, Tyria, what can you do? I can sense mana from you. Do you wield magic or a weapon?" Gwen asked, trying to make conversation.

"I use magic. My mother taught me from a young age. I also go to the Royal Academy for Magic and Martial Arts, and I’ve learned from there as well."

"That’s amazing. Kai and I plan on applying to the Hero Academy, but that’s for later. We want to become S-Rank Adventurers first."

"Wait." She turned to Kai. "I thought you were a Rank-10 warrior."

"I am." He confirmed

"Then how come you aren’t an S-Rank adventurer yet? I’m sure you’re more than strong enough to become one." Her first thought was that he was faking his rank. She heard that faking ranks is common among adventurers.

"I only became an Adventurer about a month ago. Because of that, I want to work for my rank and gain experience before I rank up. Also, Gwen needs to get stronger as well since we’re in a party."

"Oh, I understand." She nodded.

Although Kai planned on walking to Highgrive Village, a carriage happened to pass by and offer them a ride to the place.

Kai decided to accept the offer, handing the coachman a silver coin instead of the usual bronze, and climbed in. There were a few people on there, but it was still large enough for the three of them.

Thankfully, no one recognized Tyria. Kai had her remove all her jewelry and forced her to wear a cloak over her body to cover up her expensive dress. He told her that when she arrived in Highgrove, he would buy her some clothes for the time being.

After about thirty minutes, they arrived at the village.

Highgrove was a large village, larger than the previous villages Kai had been to. Still, it was smaller than Hearthwood as it was a village, not a town. However, you wouldn’t think that if you looked at how bustling this place was.

"What’s going on here?" Gwen wondered. "I never knew this place got so much activity."

"Ahh, yer must be new here, eh?" An old man smoking a pipe asked them.

"This is my first time here, yes," Kai responded.

"Makes sense. You new folk always be confused when yer arrive here. Yer see the mountain over yander?" The man asked, pointing westward.

"Yeah."

"Well, the mountain is also a tomb."

Tyria butted in. "You mean the tomb of the first hero?!" She asked in excitement

"Hahaha! Seems like yer friend knows the story."

"Of course I do! The first hero was born in this village, and he rose to power after being blessed by the goddess! After he killed the demon king who threatened the world, he returned home, where he lived out the rest of his days until he died. But before that, he created a tomb where people who passed his trials could be able to claim his sword! The same one that slayed the demon king!"

"Couldn’t have said it better myself, lass!"

"So is everyone here to get the sword?" Kai asked

"Aye. Everyone comes to these parts, risking everything for fame and fortune. However, they leave with nothing but their broken pride. Ha, gives us villagers some good money, though." He flicked a gold coin.

"So, yer kids interested in the hero’s sword?"

"Nah. Thanks for the story, though." Kai and Gwen walked away with Tyria, looking at the old man and Kai multiple times before following him.

"Why aren’t you interested in the sword? It’s so cool! Don’t you want to be a hero?" She asked

’Girl, I don’t need that sword to be a hero. I’ll already become one using my own power. My hypnosis power.’

"Nah, not interested in that for now. I just want to become an S-Rank adventurer for the time being."

"But that’s so boring!"

"The difference in social class is insane." Gwen laughed.

Tyria frowned. "What are you trying to say?"

"What I’m saying is that everything you’ll ever want and need is taken care of for you. A home, education, money, training, food, everything. Because of that, you have the time to worry about trivial things such as the hero’s sword. But to us who aren’t as privileged, we have to focus on whether we can even eat dinner tonight."

Tyria felt ashamed. She didn’t mean to come off as insensitive. She was just expressing how she felt.

"We’ll check it out after we finish what we came here for," Kai said to cheer her up.

"Really?! You mean it?!"

"Yeah. Besides, I can’t deny that I’m a tiny bit interested in this hero sword."

"Yes! Woohoo! I can’t wait! So, what will we be doing in the meantime?"

"Well, our first order of business is to get you some new clothes. After that, we’ll take on some requests at the adventurers’ or hunters’ guild. After that, we’ll stock up on some supplies for our travels, then we’ll hit up that sword."

"I’ve always wanted to become an adventurer! My father never allowed it, though."

Kai wrapped his arm around the princess and Gwen. "Well, from today until you meet back up with your guard, you’ll be an honorary member of our party. Welcome aboard."

Her face beamed with excitement. "Thank you for having me!"
