The Informal Tomb Raiding Diary: She is the occupant of the tomb!-Chapter 50: The Driver Talks Too Much
Still harboring some resentment, I couldn’t be friendly to Chen Qinghan’s friend, baring my teeth at that cheekily grinning dark face.
The guy was handsome, but his skin was particularly dark. When he smiled at night, his face seemed to be just a big white grin.
"Wow, she’s got character, Old Han. Tell me first, she doesn’t bite, right?"
"Depends on her mood. Quit the chatter and drive quickly." Chen Qinghan yanked open the car door, pushed me inside, and then followed closely, almost sitting on my lap.
"Alrighty~ Sit tight!"
Woo—
The off-road vehicle shot out like a rocket gone askew, skimming the ground. My head nearly hit the seat back, but Chen Qinghan’s palm cushioned it.
Considering his loyalty in protecting the ’treasure,’ I’ll let go of him calling me ’old.’
Age and beauty might be a woman’s lifelong topic of concern, cared about as long as she lives, okay if she says it, not if others do.
With this in mind, I touched the lotus hairpin atop my head, it was my crown, good thing it didn’t fall off.
Once I fastened the seatbelt, I realized why Chen Qinghan was anxious—there was a tail behind us.
We had just been chatting leisurely by the roadside for quite a while, no disturbance, but as soon as the pickup car arrived, another car began tailing us, trying to encircle us from either side.
On a highland highway in the dead of night, three cars drove parallel, engines roaring through the valley.
The cars on either side squeezed the black off-road car in between, bumping left and right, trying to force us to stop.
The spiky-haired driver was tough too, jerking the wheel, bumping them even harder than they did us, delivering a heavier hit.
He finally revved up and knocked the car on the left straight off the road; below was a slope, and that car was basically totaled after hurtling down.
The one on the right rushed forward, blocking horizontally in the middle of the road. The spiky-haired driver did not slow but jammed the pedal to the floor, sending the roadblock car sliding off-road, rolling down the slope.
I didn’t think much of this off-road car at first, but witnessing that tough battle, I guessed it must have been modified, sturdy as a Little Tank.
As we shook off the pursuers, the spiky-haired driver hummed a tune, as if all that had just happened was a trivial episode, not worth mentioning.
"Hey beauty, not hurt, are you?" The spiky-haired driver wore sunglasses, one hand on the steering wheel, oh so stylish.
"No." I felt underestimated. Not just a bump or two, even if this car was wrecked, I’d still be fine.
"Hey Old Han, your partner this time is quite unique."
"Heh." Chen Qinghan let out a cold chuckle, "Curiosity killed the cat."
"Curiosity about a beauty is a basic skill for a wanderer."
I didn’t understand what kind of riddle they were speaking in, only that Chen Qinghan mentioned I was his partner to the spiky-haired driver.
The spiky-haired driver seemed to know Chen Qinghan well, but he didn’t reveal my true identity even to him, my trust in him went up a notch.
"Hey beauty, how should I address you? My surname is Lv, Lv Xingzhou, but you can call me Kevin."
"My surname is Leng." I hadn’t gotten used to saying the name Fuqu yet, fearing he’d ask how it’s written, so I simply omitted it.
"Got it, Cold Beauty, icy and aloof."
As Chen Qinghan reminded me, most of my knowledge comes from films and shows, with less understanding of the real world.
But this spiky-haired Kevin was a chatterbox, always finding something to talk about and asking questions I dared not answer.
Fearing I’d reveal something if I said the wrong thing, I chose to stay silent. Besides, he’s just a driver, once he drops us off, it’s goodbye; whether the journey chat was pleasant or not really doesn’t matter.
He dropped us in the city, parking at an apartment garage entrance.
"Cold Beauty, leave a number, invite you for coffee sometime."
We were already out of the car when the spiky-haired driver stuck his head out the window, waving his phone with a mischievous grin.
I neither eat nor drink, so what would I drink coffee for? Drinking it would expose me.
This guy had been trying to invite me for meals, then for tea, now coffee; surely he’s up to no good. Far too dangerous, can’t keep in touch whatsoever.
"No number, not drinking." I pulled Chen Qinghan towards the garage entrance, and when we reached a nook where the spiky-haired driver couldn’t see us, I hurriedly asked, "Are you familiar with him?"
"Worked together." Chen Qinghan replied succinctly.
"Is he suspicious of me? I feel like he wants to test me. What does he do, study mummies?" I fished out a small mirror from my pocket, checking myself under the garage lights.
My zombie-like face used to be quite pronounced, but ever since Chen Qinghan and the others entered the ancient tomb, my body rehydrated quickly, my skin was as elastic as a normal living person now, so I shouldn’t be spotted easily.
But, there might be experts out there. Fan played a character in a sketch who could instantly spot a true mummy even one over three thousand years old.
The sketch was exaggerated, but that spiky-haired driver was equally exaggerated, racing with sunglasses at night, maybe he does see differently.
"He’s the heir of the country’s most famous auction house."
"Figures, an auction house... sharp eyes!" Should I kill him to silence him?
"He poses no threat to you, rest assured. If it were another girl, I might say a thing or two, but with you, I’d worry more about him."
"Hmm? What do you mean?"
"Nothing, get in the car." Chen Qinghan walked to a white van and opened the door on the passenger side.
"Where are we going?" I sat in the passenger seat, twisting to look into the cabin. Inside, there was no one, just lots of daily supplies and food. Otherwise, it was a very ordinary van.
"Find a place and wait for news." Chen Qinghan started the car and drove us out of downtown, heading for the wilderness.
I never had a good sense of direction, I didn’t even know what city we were in when we entered it, and I didn’t know where we were going coming out, truly lost even if sold off.
"Can’t be somewhere crowded. I know of a village that was just recently abandoned, the houses are still livable."
"Fine, all up to you."
I’ve never been picky about living arrangements. Chen Qinghan is cautious. If Eyes of Golden Flame isn’t dead, it will keep after me, wherever I settle, it will chase.
The factory fire was horrifying, Eyes of Golden Flame shows no restraint when in action, so Chen Qinghan bringing me to desolate spots was with safety in mind.
After all, I’m no Sun Wukong, causing havoc upon birth, staying low-key is best.
"Who were those chasing us on the road?" I wanted to ask back then but held it in because of the spiky-haired driver.
"Chairman Cheng’s people."
"Why were they trying to kill us?"
"Because I took Boss Lu away."
"Right, he hired you to find Boss Lu, yet you found him only to take him yourself, never intending to hand him to Chairman Cheng."
