Chapter 136: Wallace (2)

Hazel enjoyed tonight’s dinner knowing that she had Tabitha bothered all through it. Tabitha learned tonight just how crazy she could be to make a statement by being willing to wear this one dress again.

Hazel knew the kind of gossip that would be shared about her, but the palace would take a bigger hit. When asked, she wouldn’t keep it a secret that the wrong dresses were sent to her room.

Hazel looked forward to speaking to Jeffrey alone and seeing if Tabitha would try to be present for the conversation. Hazel would request to speak to Jeffrey each time Tabitha bothered her just to see the queen squirm in her seat.

Dinner came to an end faster than the night before and Sofia was first escorted back to her bedroom to get some rest.

"I will wait for your talk with Hazel to be over with and then escort her back to her room. Doesn’t anyone think that during the day we should have a moment to meet to get to know more about each other? The selection was only seven days," said Tobias.

"And whose fault was it that it didn’t go on for more days?" Jeffrey asked. "I’ll allow it as long as it is an open space with someone watching you two. An hour or so should be good so it doesn’t affect both your schedules."

Tabitha wished to remind everyone that it was her duty. They were misplacing jobs and doing as they liked. "I will prepare something for the two of them. Hazel loves flowers so it will be in the garden."

"That settles that. Now, should we go on a little walk so I can hear what you wish to speak about?" Jeffrey asked, standing up to not keep Hazel waiting.

Tabitha was back to feeling nervous since the two were not going to sit here and speak. She could have stood outside to listen to what would be shared, but now there was only one option. "Take a maid with you," she suggested.

"For what? We don’t need to be served while we walk. I’m sure Hazel doesn’t want anyone eavesdropping on the conversation. We’ll be back shortly. Are you ready?" Jeffrey questioned, going around the table to offer his hand to Hazel.

Hazel stood up, accepting Jeffrey’s hand. "I am ready."

Tabitha muttered a curse under her breath. Of all times, why wasn’t it now that Tobias wanted to be by Hazel’s side? She could do nothing but sit watching Hazel leave the room with Jeffrey and dread what would be said between the two.

Jeffrey waited for them to be away from the maids standing outside the door to say. "I apologise for my wife’s actions."

Hazel looked to her right at the king, surprised to hear he knew who was behind everything. "You seemed to be confused earlier. I did not expect you to be so quick to pick up on it. Tobias didn’t. At least I don’t think he did."

"I’ve been married to her for a long time and though those two have been bickering lately, there are some tricks he wouldn’t point to his mother as the one behind it because he loves her. That is why I like that you didn’t mention her involvement," said Jeffrey.

Hazel didn’t know what to make of Jeffrey. Was he good or was he bad? He knew that Tabitha wasn’t giving her the greatest welcome and so far, he didn’t do much to help her. Jeffrey tried to silence Tabitha sometimes but it wasn’t shown to Hazel yet that he was putting effort to stop the queen.

"Am I to go on not letting the prince or princess know about what their mother is doing? That doesn’t leave me in a good position as I am the one being tormented. I don’t want to be the reason Tobias argues with his mother, but I can’t promise to keep quiet for long," Hazel said as the queen showed no signs of stopping.

"You are quite confident about my son’s love for you. Tabitha only wants one thing and that is for you to listen. She has complained about your attitude and though I like it, I think that you should be listening to my wife," said Jeffrey.

Hazel let go of Jeffrey’s hand and put some space between them. "I was more than willing to listen until the tricks she started to play."

Jeffrey laughed at Hazel moving away from him. "Were you expecting something else when you asked me to speak alone? Were you looking to me to be ready to do everything you wanted in regards to my wife? The dresses will be there by tomorrow night and then this should end here. Don’t lose this fire you have, but try to listen to her-"

"It’s more than not listening to the queen. She doesn’t think I am suited for Tobias. She gravitated to my sister from the beginning and didn’t show much interest in me. I don’t know what else I could have possibly done to make her dislike me. You cannot ask that I listen when I am being bullied for nothing," said Hazel.

"The shoes might have been painful and the dresses a bit tight, but I did look into it and it is something that is tradition. My wife was only following tradition and that unfortunately left you in pain. There was more to be done when she realised your discomfort, but a lot of what you shall face will stem from tradition. Not her hate," Jeffrey said, placing his hands behind his back as he enjoyed the cold air.

"You are failing at being the bridge to help the two of us. It feels like you are ignoring her nonsense or trying to make sense of it to have me forgive her. I asked you here for one reason and it has nothing to do with the queen’s behaviour toward me," Hazel said, wanting to move on.

"The queen has picked all of my maids and I would like to get the honours of picking one. Preferably one from my family home so I feel comfortable. The maids don’t speak to me and we are both smart to know that they report to the queen. That is why you dismiss letting one walk with us," Hazel added before the king could deny it.

She was not a fool to enter the palace and not pay attention to her surroundings.

Jeffrey enjoyed seeing this fire Tabitha spoke of since Hazel was normally quiet like every other lady to come around him. "I understand the need to have a maid you can trust, but it is not a simple request. It isn’t a good look for me to be going against all that she wants just to make you happy. I can’t step too much on what Tabitha controls."

From the beginning, Tabitha didn’t have any input on his duties and he respectfully stayed out of getting involved in what was her duties. The queen didn’t do much concerning making decisions for the kingdom so he let Tabitha be happy in control of what she was allowed.

"Then I should bring to light a matter that will concern the palace. Either I get a maid or I shall return home as a lady of the Wallace family should not endure this bullying. Do you wish to test what my father loves more? Making weapons for you or his daughter? I happen to love bets,’ said Hazel.
