Chapter 137: Wallace (3)

"You’re threatening to bring an end to the relationship I have with your family? That is something," Jeffrey said, amused.

Right now, Jeffrey couldn’t have Nathan leave his side. No one else could produce a large scale of quality weapons for the palace as the Wallaces did and the family’s wealth wasn’t something to ignore.

The Wallace’s were quite useful.

"Come now. No need to go so far and involve your father."

Hazel chuckled as the king sounded ridiculous. "Why shouldn’t I involve him? With how I am being treated, it feels like my father means nothing to the palace so I must tell him. I should be treated with respect but that isn’t happening. Surely, my father should know how you treat his family."

"I am not going to sit quietly and take a beating. Not so early into this new life to have it go on forever. There are other people I will need to put up a fight against and I would like to be having to protect myself from the queen. She should have been an ally," Hazel said.

From what Hazel witnessed so far, the court caused a lot of trouble so rather than be so caught up with Tabitha, that was where her attention should be.

Jeffrey sighed.

"I wouldn’t have come to this if not for the queen and you," Hazel added.

"Me? What have I done to you? I have been more than welcoming," Jeffrey replied, not seeing his fault. In private he had been defending Hazel and was punished by Tabitha sleeping far away from him on the bed.

"You’ve done nothing that I can see and I know it must be hard to point out what your wife is doing wrong, but at some point, there is something to be done," Hazel explained.

When she came to dinner, Hazel felt like there were solutions thrown out into the room to solve her problems, but then a new day would start and she would be facing the same problems plus a few more.

"So far with your wife, I have learned what not to be. The kind of queen and wife I don’t want to be. I hope Tobias will grow comfortable with me to tell me when I am wrong in the future. All that I am asking for is my things returned to me, proper dresses sent to my room, and a maid. You can make that happen," said Hazel.

There was so much more she could request, but she was sticking to what she needed at the moment.

"Here I thought I would be having a nice talk with my daughter-in-law. Something that I could boast about to your father whenever he would enter the palace. I see now why Tabitha doesn’t get along with you and I don’t say that to insult you," Jeffrey said, referring to two strong personalities clashing.

One that was used to women in the palace obeying her and the other that needed a mutual respect.

"The dresses and your things will be returned to you by morning. I will speak to my wife about you picking a maid," Jeffrey answered.

"Before I pick a maid from the palace, I want one brought from my parent’s home. Just until I get married to Tobias and then I will send her back," Hazel promised.

Hazel had a feeling that Tabitha would agree to let her pick a maid, but it would be from more women under Tabitha’s control. Until she was named queen, Hazel wanted to look around at the maids and see who was following the queen’s every word.

"Given what is being said in the court, the maid might be here for a few months to a year,’ Jeffrey revealed.

"What?" Hazel replied, shocked that it would be that long before a wedding. Wasn’t the wedding planning already starting? "Why would it take so long for us to get married? Isn’t the prince to become king soon?"

"I’ve shared a bit too much. The decision isn’t final yet so forget what I said until an announcement is made. I will see what I can do about a maid coming from your home, but remember, I need to speak to the queen about this," Jeffrey said, changing the subject.

It was a grave mistake to let it slip that the wedding might be pushed back. It wasn’t something he wanted and was all the court’s doing as they started claiming that Tobias was not ready to become king and Hazel needed more time to be prepared.

There was another meeting to be held and a vote for what should be done. Jeffrey thought Tobias was ready, but it was more than just him Tobias needed to convince. Once given to Tobias, the throne could not be easily given back to Jeffrey so the timing had to be right. ƒree𝑤ebnσvel.com

Though Jeffrey was prepared to let Tobias lead, he had to hear everyone’s concerns as it was best for the kingdom.

"Is that all you wish to speak to me about or is there more to your threat?" Jeffrey inquired.

"No. As long as you get what I requested, I will not go to my father. I truly want to be able to blend in with your family and get along with everyone. If no more incidents that are the queen’s doing happen, I am more than willing to move forward, but not forget."

Hazel would never forget Tabitha’s treatment, but she could work toward being civil in private.

"I don’t want Tobias and I to one day start a family and I am not getting along with Tabitha. I’ve had enough awkward family dinners," said Hazel.

"Unfortunately, awkward family dinners are avoidable here, but I do agree that the five of us should be able to get along. I will speak to my wife once more, but I cannot control her feelings toward you," Jeffrey said, needing that to be clear. He was defending Hazel and trying to get Tabitha to see her faults, but there was only so much he could do.

"Should she continue to dislike you there is nothing I can do. I have too much on my plate to be

constantly solving your issues with Tabitha."

It was bad, but Jeffrey was being honest. He had a kingdom to care for and the moments when he had time to sit with his family, he would like the drama to be already taken care of so he could enjoy a family sit down.

Hazel and Tabitha were both at an age where they could sit and air out their differences in a single meeting so dinner wouldn’t be affected every night. The palace was big enough for them to not see each other often and get along in the short time they would need to sit together.

Jeffrey would have one final talk with Tabitha before Nathan would be brought in. Hopefully, hearing Hazel’s threat might make Tabitha stop.

"I am aware that you cannot control her actions toward me, but it would be comforting to see you putting in a little effort to stop what I am going through. I don’t feel protected by the queen so I would like to at least have you," Hazel said, hoping she would have a good relationship with the king.

They only spoke at dinner so Hazel did not know what he was truly like. He could turn out to be just as Tabitha was now.

"I have no plans to be against you, Hazel. Give me this night to do a bit of fixing and let me take you back to my son," Jeffrey said, proceeding to escort her back.
