The King's Unbreakable Wife-Chapter 138: False Ally (1)
Chapter 138: False Ally (1)
Tobias pushed himself off the wall he was leaning on upon seeing Hazel returning with his father. He had a lot to think about while Hazel was away and it mostly concerned his mother standing not far away from him.
They did not speak to each other while they waited for their respective partners. Tobias had noticed his mother continuously staring in the direction Hazel walked with his father and occasionally picking at her nails.
The small action wasn’t something he saw her do often as she would call it unladylike so it confused him and started the suspicion that she had more to do with Hazel’s missing things.
Tobias thought of questioning her as they stood alone but held back as he needed to speak with Hazel first. If it was his mother, did Hazel already know? Was she keeping it a secret from him? Why? Were they not to be honest?
Tobias shook his head as there were too many questions over something he didn’t know if he was correct on. There were maids around to eavesdrop so a better time could be used to discuss this.
"That was fast," Tobias said, going to Hazel to hold her hand.
"Are you not satisfied that it was fast? I can take her for another walk-"
"Don’t be ridiculous. Why should Hazel be tortured by listening to you speak when it is time for her to retire to her bed? Goodnight," Tobias bid goodbye to his parents. He paid attention to Hazel also saying goodbye and how she did not look his mother’s way even for a second.
He now had the answer that Hazel suspected his mother had something to do with her recent troubles or there was something else happening with the two.
Tobias led Hazel away with her maids trailing behind them. "Take ten steps back and then continue to follow us, but do not close the space," he ordered Hazel’s maids. He couldn’t visit Hazel’s bedroom tonight as too many visits would lead to him getting caught so they had to talk now.
Tobias and Hazel continued to walk as the maids took the ten steps back and then started walking forward again with a large space between the two groups.
"Hazel, are we not to be honest with each other?" Tobias asked.
"We are," Hazel replied.
"Then why didn’t you share your suspicion that my mother had your things taken from your bedroom? What don’t I know that is happening between you two? Now that I think back, there was a bit of tension at dinner tonight. Tell me what you suspect," Tobias said, wanting only the truth.
Hazel slowly turned away from Tobias. The truth might have him storming over to his mother right now. "The queen did say that I should not worry about bringing anything to the palace because what I need would be here so she might have sent the maids to do a check in secret. There was tension because I argued with your mother."
Tobias stopped walking, but then he realised this would have the maids catching up to them, so he continued. "When was this?" He asked, trying to keep his anger at bay since Hazel wasn’t the one to see it.
"At breakfast," Hazel confessed. Though she wished to keep her conflict with Tabitha from Tobias, lying now would be pointless as he knew something was off. "I am handling it well by myself."
"How are you handling it well when you only have one dress you are comfortable in and you are keeping secrets from me? Do you not trust me? Do you think that I would not help you?" Tobias asked, not understanding why she would not say something to him.
"I am handling it well by not leaving the palace though it has crossed my mind. I didn’t want to share because she is your mother. I don’t want to be the reason the two of you are arguing. I turned to the king as the middle person to help me," said Hazel.
Hazel continued to say, "I know it would make more sense for me to turn to you for help, but I first wanted to deal with this on my own. Should it have gotten worse, I would have come to you. Please believe me."
Tobias pinched the bridge of his nose, still trying to surpass his anger. It was only day two and yet Hazel was having to bear with crap from someone again and worst of all, it was still his mother. "Hazel, should you want to deal with some things on your own, I will gladly take a step back and let you carry out your plans, but at least inform me."
"Let me be aware of your fights so that in the event something goes wrong, I know who I must go to protect you from. I don’t care if it is a member of my family, tell me. It is only fucking day two and already you’re dealing with nonsense from my mother," Tobias said, placing his trembling hands on his hips. "What else has she done?"
Hazel looked over her shoulder at the maids still following them. There was still some space that if they spoke low what they spoke of would not be heard. "Please speak softly. I don’t need the queen to be aware that you know of her tricks. It is better for me that she doesn’t know."
Hazel didn’t put anything past the queen and rather than changing her ways after knowing Tobias was aware of what she did, Hazel could see the queen coming after her more for revealing this side of her to Tobias.
"Believe me, I am trying my best here," Tobias whispered.
This was harder than his sword training as all he wanted to do was yell and curse while wanting the conversation to be kept private. He did not want any of the maids running off to his mother to warn her that he knew of her role.
"Your mother has made it quite clear that she doesn’t like me and Helena revealed that the queen is trying to use her to get me out of the palace. Helena would take my spot to marry you. I am working with Helena to ruin the queen’s plans. Right now, I just need you to not say anything," Hazel requested.
Before she had her maid and Helena was through with meeting with the queen, Tobias should not say a word. Hazel looked forward to the queen’s gathering with other women to spoil any of Tabitha’s plans and send a message to any of the queen’s friends who might target her in the future.
She had to show that she was not one to crumble to their tricks and Tabitha was the perfect person to use. Going head to head with the queen in front of others and coming out on top would give her a bit of praise she needed right now.
"You said that you would stand back as long as you know. Well, now you know. Let me continue with what I am doing and should it get worse, I will turn to you for help. I ask the king to allow me to get a maid from my home for the time being. That was all," Hazel said, taking hold of Tobias’s hand to calm him. freeωebnovēl.c૦m
"I will end this all in a way for you to not have to argue with your mother. That is something I do not wish to see."
Hazel was not someone to take delight in Tobias arguing with Tabitha over her.
"Fine, but I will be watching her every move now," Tobias replied. There was a lot to learn about the woman he called mother.
