Chapter 163: Too good (2)

"Why are you pouting, Hazel?"

"I am not," Hazel replied, turning her face to hide her pout.

"Is it because you are upset that all I did was wash you? Were you looking for something more? She is upset." Tobias watched as Hazel picked up pace to walk ahead of him.

At first, she wasn’t ready to do anything as they soaked, but then as he washed her that seemed to change, but he stuck to what he said in the beginning to get under her skin. If Hazel wanted him to touch her more, she should have said it.

Now she was being grumpy as they walked to the stables for their horse.

Tobias had arranged for a few of their things to be moved to the house they were using today and already had the picnic prepared and waiting for them. The perfect way to spend their wedding would be to leave the palace, but since it could not happen, he was trying his best.

Hazel welcomed the sunlight when she stepped out of the door leading outside. She had never visited where all the horses and other animals were kept so it was like a tour.

She looked forward to riding around with Tobias and then settling in the house he spoke of, but there was some worry. Why was the day going so well so far?

Hazel hated that peace was something she had to worry about in the palace. When she was relaxed and enjoying herself something would go wrong soon after. Hazel didn’t believe that those who were being hard on her were backing off because she had just gotten married. They weren’t so kind as to give her that grace.

’As soon as this day is over, trouble will come,’ Hazel thought. It was fitting something would happen as she would soon be crowned queen.

This peace was a treat she had to enjoy every second of. Her true battle in the palace would start once she was announced as queen. There was already pressure from all around to have a child as soon as possible. Many wouldn’t care about her feelings if she did not produce an heir in a timely manner.

"What has you so lost in thought?"

Tobias’s question made Hazel shudder as his breath tickled her ear from his closeness.

Tobias was enjoying their married life so Hazel did not want to share her concerns. She had to be like him, enjoying the moment without thinking about the palace.

"Nothing. Which horse will you be taking?" Hazel asked, leaving her concerns here. "Which horse belongs to you?"

"I have a white horse I use when I am riding out to war. He requires too much handling so I am letting the stable boy give me another. Do you want to ride together?" Tobias asked, using his hands to shield Hazel’s face from the sunlight. "Fetch her a hat. Quickly."

"It is fine, Tobias. I enjoy the sun," Hazel said, moving his hands. "Is it proper for us to ride together?"

"Is this another one of the palace beliefs that if we ride together, you will end up pregnant? They mistook the type of riding-"

"Do not," Hazel warned.

Mary was not far behind her and Hazel would prefer to keep the woman’s ears innocent.

Tobias smiled, loving how Hazel was quick to understand what he was going to say. "Hazel, I need to see what is written in those books. How did you know my words were going to be dirty?" freēnovelkiss.com

"I’ve learned that everything which comes out of your mouth is dirty. Mary, you may return to your room as Tobias- the prince and I will be alone. Should I need you, I will send for you. Please be safe," Hazel advised Mary as she feared someone might hurt the one person loyal to her. "Should I have you just stay at a distance?"

"I will be fine. I shall head straight to my quarters and await your call. I do not wish to disturb your day," Mary replied. The prince looked eager to be alone with Hazel so she would stay out of the way.

After three months, Mary knew her way around the palace. Where she should and shouldn’t go. Hazel had nothing to worry about.

"Very well," Hazel said, going along with sending Mary away. She then joined Tobias in going to the horse they would share.

A young stable boy brought a brown horse for Tobias to use.

"It is beautiful," Hazel complimented the well-taken care of the horse. Though there were many horses present in the palace stables, they appeared to be well cared for. "If there is an apple in our picnic basket, can I feed him?"

"You can," the stable boy replied with his head bowed.

Hazel wasn’t used to someone not meeting her gaze and found the interaction to be uncomfortable. How long would it take everyone in the palace to know that she would not be the queen to want the servants to not look at her?

Hazel knew that the title of queen would be scary to others, but she wasn’t planning on letting it change her. If possible, Hazel wanted to be a queen where the people felt safe to approach her. How was she to help them if they were afraid of her?

"Let me help you up, Hazel."

Hazel looked away from the stable boy who looked to be a few years younger than her. She must thank him when she saw him again as he had given her the first task she needed to do as queen. Building relationships with her people so they could come to her.

Currently, the queen stayed within the palace walls unless there was an important party to attend outside. Hazel had been all over the town so she wasn’t afraid to go out and see where the town would need her help.

Her earlier concern was now replaced with determination to start doing her duties as queen.

Hazel accepted Tobias’s help to get onto the horse and then waited for him to join her. She sat sideways because of her dress and didn’t mind it as she could look at Tobias.

Not long after, they started a slow ride to where their picnic was prepared for them.

"You went from being bothered by something to smiling. Is it something you want to share with me?" Tobias asked.

"I am thinking about the queen that I want to be. I will do my best to help you in caring for the kingdom. I apologise if I ruined the mood earlier. I shouldn’t be worrying about anything other than having a good day with you," Hazel replied, turning to look at Tobias.

"I would love it if you would share your concerns with me as well as what makes you happy. Learn from me that bottling up something and not speaking about it when living in this palace might put you in a dark place. I am glad that you are back to thinking about me," Tobias said, preferring that he was all that filled her mind.

"It was a small matter which did not need to be shared. Something foolish," Hazel answered. She didn’t want to share that the peace worried her as it would sound like she was asking for trouble.

"I see. Now, would you be so bold to want to continue where we stopped last night among the trees-"

"You have one day left before becoming king. Do not suggest something stupid so that you may live to see that day," Hazel replied, putting an end to the suggestion.
