Chapter 172: A day in bed (3)

Hazel laid in bed resting her head on Tobias’s bare chest. After being intimate, the two stayed in bed as there was nothing more to do.

"I am terrified of becoming queen though I have been preparing for it for the last three months. There is so much responsibility before us and I have never faced anything like this. What if I am judged to be a terrible queen?" Hazel asked.

Fearing letting down her parents was already overwhelming now Hazel feared disappointing an entire kingdom.

"What if I am to go down in history as a terrible queen? I don’t wish to be remembered like that."

"You will not be a terrible queen, Hazel. I will be right beside you when you need help and should I notice you doing something which will greatly affect the kingdom, I will tell you about your actions. I have the same fear but I trust that you will be there when I am making mistakes to help me," said Tobias.

He shared Hazel’s fears as it was scary to think many lives depended on your rule. It was like having many children you needed to care for and you didn’t want to see any of them hurt.

There was also the fact that being king was never something Tobias wanted. He was forced to spend the rest of his life doing something he didn’t like.

"We will be fine,’ Tobias said, certain of it. "And when it is all done we will retire far from this palace. I hope you would never be eager like my mother to want to be close to the palace. We could go see the seas. I heard it is wonderful."

"The moment we could get out of the palace, I would love that. I have never visited the docks. It will be a nice treat for what we must put up with. I would love to settle somewhere quiet. Like in the countryside. We’re not yet queen or king yet we are planning where to settle," Hazel chuckled, amused by this.

They were so far ahead in the future when they should be thinking about the coronation.

"Planning where we settle in the end gives us something to look forward to. We’ll know that this is all worth it for what awaits us. Unfortunately, we wouldn’t be able to travel with our child as they must take our spot. As time nears do you regret it? Marriage to me?" Tobias asked as she had given up a normal way of living.

There would have been less pressure on her. Hazel could have had a simple family and raised her children to her liking. Here, she was faced with many rules.

It was always at the back of his mind that he rid her of a normal life. Hazel couldn’t exactly say no to his proposal unless she wished to ruin her family.

She came to love him, but still.

"Sometimes I do think of what else would have awaited me if you picked someone else," Hazel confessed. "I might have wondered what life would be if I were in the selection if I had married before your return for it. There hasn’t been a moment when I regret it."

"There might come a day when you do," Tobias said as this was just the beginning. "I will do my best to protect you."

"You will not always be around every second to protect me. I must learn to protect myself. I never want to see you in turmoil over not being by my side for an incident. Things will happen," Hazel said, knowing it was unavoidable.

She would have her battles with many ladies and even men who undermined her position in the palace. Hazel didn’t expect for Tobias to be around to save her from all the incidents plotted against her. Something might even slip by the guards he picked for her.

It was her duty to be aware of her surroundings and help to protect herself.

"Still," Tobias said, hooked on keeping her safe. If he couldn’t keep his wife safe, what could he do for the kingdom?

"Don’t worry about it yet. We should hope the coronation goes smoothly. I have a few plans in mind for how to help the kingdom that I am eager to share," said Hazel.

"Tell me and I will bring it up in my meetings with the court," Tobias replied.

"Why wouldn’t I share my own ideas?" Hazel questioned, propping herself up to look at Tobias.

"Have you not been informed that you will not be around for court meetings? My mother has never sat in one even when it is with other royals. You should have been informed of this. Queens don’t get involved in court matters," Tobias said confused as to why she was learning of this now.

He was to take on most of the work dealing with the kingdom while Hazel would take care of the palace. Hold balls, invite ladies from important families to the palace for gatherings, and deal with the affairs of women. Most importantly, getting pregnant with the next heir.

"So did," Hazel paused, confused by this. "Why did my lessons prepare me to sit in court meetings? I learned how to write up my plans to be shared with the court. Why did I need to learn so much just to sit by your side and do nothing? Why didn’t they just teach me to be a living doll?"

Hazel had been putting together ideas for how to help the kingdom as queen. To make a difference for those who needed it with her position. Should she send those ideas through Tobias there was no doubt he would be given the credit.

What mattered most was the people, but was it wrong to show that the queen was doing something? Shouldn’t she help Tobias?

Hazel sat up, too upset to lay in bed. "It is not right. It is no wonder some might not take the queen seriously. There is no use of my position other than to make heirs and help to host balls. There should be more for me to do."

"There should be," Tobias agreed. Unfortunately, it had always been this way that the queen did not have much say in palace affairs. Something like that was said to not concern women. "You could be the one to change this."

"But then I will gain more enemies. Said to be against everything since I came into the palace. It feels like someone is tying my hand. Me fighting what was done in the past would make life difficult for you, wouldn’t it?" Hazel asked.

The court would run to Tobias to complain.

Hazel sighed. "I won’t add to your work. I suppose I have no choice but to be the queen I am expected to be. I will give my plans to you. What matters most is the people," Hazel said, laying back down in bed.

Her excitement changed now that she knew her role. It would have been different if she wasn’t prepared as if she were important.

"Hazel-"

"It is fine. If you don’t mind, I wish to get some sleep," Hazel said, turning to the right to back Tobias. "I am not upset with you. You have nothing to do with my feelings. I just want to sleep."

’Very well," Tobias replied, giving her the space she wanted.
