The King's Unbreakable Wife-Chapter 186: Another woman (1)
Chapter 186: Another woman (1)
"Hmm." Grant was pleased with the letter sent to him from Julia. He tucked it into his coat to keep it safe to burn later. Now all he had to do was get his hands on something to stop Hazel from becoming with a child before Linda would enter the palace as Tobias’s woman.
His plans were slowly coming together. All he needed now was to try returning to Kenneth’s good side. Grant had no idea what had been causing Kenneth to act out of turn these days. Had someone spoken to Kenneth about the plan to get Linda on the throne?
If someone let it slip to Kenneth when Grant knew now was not the right time, Grant would kill the person when he found out who it was.
"I’m sorry you came here and it is only me present," said Tessa Henson, Kenneth’s wife. "Linda has gone to the palace to be with the queen and the boys are preparing for a sparring match."
"And Kenneth?" Grant questioned, watching as Tessa placed a tray with treats before him.
"He said he wouldn’t be gone long since I am the only one here," Tessa answered.
"That doesn’t answer where he is now. Where did he go?" Grant questioned, finding her to be useless. Other than the pretty face, he would never understand why Kenneth picked her.
Grant inspected her slim body. At the very least, she had been able to carry three sons. It was more than Grant had thought she would give to Kenneth.
Tessa didn’t know what to say as she had not questioned Kenneth on where he was going. He was always busy thanks to the palace and then with having to tend to an army. Unless something seemed to be weighing Kenneth’s mind, she didn’t question him too much about it. fгeewёbnoѵel.cσm
When Tessa did it before, Grant had called it nagging.
"Shouldn’t you at least know where your husband is? Do you only care about your sons and daughter? Not the man who provides you this comfort?" Grant questioned, not yet moving to enjoy the treats she brought.
"I care for all of them. He suddenly had to leave and said that he would soon be back so I didn’t pry. It shouldn’t be long since he said so. You can eat and stay for as long as you-"
"You are telling me what to do in a home that belongs to my son? What I have always disliked about you is how you speak too much but it is nothing important. Other than your children, you have not shown yourself useful. You were to prepare Linda to enter the palace," said Grant.
"Her heart was set on Edgar and it is not her desire to become queen. I don’t want to force it upon her. I heard good things about how well she did-"
"Why does that matter?" Grant yelled, tempted to throw something but it would defeat his purpose of coming here.
Tessa took a step back, wanting to get far away from Grant. She did not want to argue with her father-in-law and Grant scared her. She bit her lip just as she had done many times throughout her marriage as she hid her conversations with Grant from Kenneth.
Grant was too hard to please. He didn’t like it when she spoke or when she was silent. Grant liked to request that she be the one to serve the guests instead of the butler or maids. Tessa preferred the days Kenneth would go to his father instead of Grant coming here.
"It matters to me that she finds her happiness. I apologise on her behalf that she didn’t make it far, but the second part of the selection was called off and there was only one woman who could win. We are all happy that it is Hazel," Tessa said, not the slightest bit disappointed in the outcome.
Though it would have been quite the sight to see Linda become queen, it was not meant for her. It was odd that Grant was still hooked on the selection which was no longer on anyone’s mind. Shouldn’t he be happy for Hazel?
"I don’t appreciate the look of question you have toward me. I see now why Kenneth turns to other women for comfort," Grant said, moving to try the treats Tessa brought.
"My husband does not-"
"He shall as he is a man. You are old and day by day losing your beauty. You hardly act as a woman should. As a wife should. I warned him not to get involved with you. You were mostly good for one time in bed. Not to be his wife. Will you cry?" Grant said, ticked off by her expression.
Tessa didn’t suit being a Henson. She didn’t have much tough skin to be one. His wife could listen to his harsh words which were to make her better and smile throughout it.
"I am not going to cry. With all due respect, I know my husband well enough to trust that he will not have another woman and we are all over the selection. Please do not bring it up anymore. I know you wish for the Hensons to do well, but this was not something we could win this time," said Tessa.
Rather than Grant staying for Kenneth’s return, she wanted him to leave. If not for the growing tension she felt these days, she would speak to Kenneth about Grant’s treatment of her, but this family did not need to be divided. Tessa did not want to ruin the children’s opinion of their grandfather.
"You may go. The sight of you bores me. I shall always think that you are the cause of ruining my son. Go," Grant shooed her away. To get Kenneth to wake up from the person he was now, it might be a good idea to dispose of Tessa.
Tessa curtsied, happy to be sent away so her shoulders could relax. She sighed in relief the second she stepped out of the room.
Tessa placed her left hand on the wall to help support herself. Grant’s visit always left her body feeling weak. ’Please come home soon, Kenneth.’
Tessa didn’t want to hear any more about the selection. She wished she had stuck to her gut feeling in the beginning and not sent Linda. Why did she ever listen to Grant at that time?
"Why does it upset him so much?" Tessa wondered. Everyone wanted their daughters to become queens, but neither Tessa nor Kenneth were thrilled about it. How could she be after the tales Kenneth told her about the palace? "I must tell Kenneth to get him to stop speaking of it before it affects Linda’s relationship with Hazel."
"Why are you mumbling to yourself?" Kenneth questioned, stopping before Tessa to block her path. "Did the boys break something again?"
Tessa looked up at Kenneth. "You are back early. I was just lost in thought about something. Your father is here waiting for you. I will bring you something to drink."
Kenneth lifted Tessa’s right hand to kiss the back. "Let a servant bring it and go do something you want. I shall be with you shortly after sending him off."
Tessa smiled, distracted from her earlier thoughts by Kenneth. The man before her was worth having to put up with Grant.
