The King's Unbreakable Wife-Chapter 190: Shame (1)
Chapter 190: Shame (1)
"Your Majesty, you look beautiful. I’m certain you will be the most beautiful lady at the gathering today," Lynn said as she moved quickly to style Hazel.
Today was Hazel’s first gathering with women she carefully selected. Of all the days the maids have been dressing Hazel, now was the time to make her the most beautiful for her first sit down with women as the queen must be memorable.
"Thank you for the compliment as always, Lynn. You know how to calm my nerves. Is everything set up alright and the guards watching to make sure nothing is disturbed?" Hazel questioned as she couldn’t have anyone tampering with today’s event.
"Yes. One of your guards is there to watch over the seating and the king has sent one to look over the food. Should something happen today, it might be the doing of one of the women invited. We will keep a close watch as you instructed us to tell you who not to invite again," said Lynn.
"Your Majesty, your tea," Julia said, placing the warm tea before Hazel.
"Oh thank you, but I am not in the mood for tea now. You seem very down in mood these days Julia. Is there something wrong you want to share with me? I can help you," Hazel offered.
Lynn turned to Julia who was usually quiet when the queen wasn’t around but quite diligent when it came time to serve. Julia didn’t speak to the maids so they weren’t able to get close to her, but Lynn had noticed that Julia seemed to have a lover.
Lynn had once caught Julia smiling at a letter the same way some of the other maids would smile when the guards read their letters. Perhaps Julia was thinking of leaving the palace to be with this person but she was afraid of leaving the queen’s side so soon.
’She should just tell the queen. Hazel has been helping us more than she needs to,’ Lynn thought. The queen was kind which made her maids want to protect her more than anyone they served in the palace.
"I- It is nothing. I don’t want to ruin your day. You look lovely, Your Majesty," Julia said, keeping her head bowed. Hazel was the worst person to speak to about Grant being unhappy with her because nothing had come out of what she was feeding Hazel. ƒгeewebnovёl.com
"I hear that you request to leave the palace from time to time to visit your siblings. If there is something you need for them, I would be more than happy to help. You can all come to me whenever you need help. Let me repay how well you take care of me," said Hazel.
"I think that Julia has a lover,’ Lynn revealed.
Julia looked up, confused as to how Lynn believed she had a lover. Lynn had never seen her speaking to Grant so how? "I do not, Your Majesty. I have no time for love when caring for my family."
Hazel didn’t believe Julia based on her reaction. Now she wondered if the bruises that were showing up came from this lover as Julia didn’t have any more interactions with Jane for it to be her doing. Or was it someone else in the palace? Who would be so daring to harm a queen’s maid and who was it to have Julia be so tip-lipped about it?
"I was reading a good book recently. One that all of you might enjoy," Hazel said, facing the mirror once more. "It is a book about love that explores the different kinds of love one might face. A mother’s love. The love between sisters. Love with a man and best of all, how we can mistake other feelings for love."
"Oh!" Lynn covered her mouth. "Is it a book Your Majesty should be reading? It sounds a little..."
"I quite enjoyed it. The writer did well by showing the good sides of love and how we must realise what isn’t love. For example, someone causing you harm does not love you no matter what they say after it. It is more about controlling you and should you not walk away from it, they might end up stealing your life. I will send all of you copies," Hazel offered.
"Thank you, Your Majesty. I have never thought about that. It makes me a little nervous and I want to think about my conversations with those I have tried to court," Lynn said, touching her now warm cheek.
Julia stayed quiet as she knew what Hazel was doing. The queen shouldn’t be so concerned about others’ relationships when hers was about to crumble. ’Grant loves me,’ Julia thought. He loved her more than his wife and only hit her because she was failing him.
There were all kinds of women coming into the palace at the request of the court. Hazel was soon going to see a different kind of love as the king was going to take one by his side eventually and then the very woman Hazel was calling her best friend.
"I will enjoy the book. It shall take my mind off caring for my siblings. My little brother is a bit hard to deal with so he tries to fight whenever I make him eat. I have no time for a lover when having to be their mother," said Julia.
"I see. The money you receive is now a lot more to hire someone to care for your family while you are here. There are clothes donated that are here to be sent out to many orphanages. I hope it is not rude to say this, but you can take a few if you’d like. I would buy new ones but I don’t leave the palace," Hazel said, hoping Julia would appreciate the gesture.
Hazel wanted to learn more about Julia’s family but didn’t want to upset her.
Julia felt insulted as she didn’t need donated clothes. Grant took care of her needs in exchange for her following his command. She might not have come from a wealthy family like the queen but she did not need donations.
"Julia," Lynn whispered, trying to get the maid to respond. She had visited the room storing the clothes donated with Hazel and knew that they were not as one would imagine.
Some clothes looked to be worn once by nobles as they didn’t want to be caught in it twice and as the trends changed each season, nobles would change their clothes. Lynn knew people with families would be happy to take a few of what was donated.
If Julia didn’t want any for herself, would the maid be so kind as to take a few to pass to someone else?
"Forgive me, Julia. It might be insulting to offer such a thing. Perhaps we should go back to speaking of the gathering today and making sure that it goes well," Hazel said, changing the conversation before it turned sour.
"It is time for you to take your medicine, Your Majesty."
"Must I? These days it feels like the medicine is making me sick. I will have to get rid of the taste with the tea," Hazel said, reaching for the tea Julia brought to drink after the foul-tasting medicine.
