Chapter 191: Shame (2)

"The queen’s offer to you was generous. You should have accepted it as the clothes look new. Trust me, there are times when I don’t want to hear from those who grew up not having to worry about money, but the queen is different. She-"

"Why do you continue to try speaking to me?" Julia asked, putting an end to Lynn’s blabbering. "We should be quiet while the queen is busy."

"It is not against any rules for us to speak to each other. We should be close to protect each other since we serve the queen. Your time in the palace would be much better if you had some friends. Are you angry that no one spoke up when the queen’s maid troubled you?" Lynn asked.

Lynn had her problems at that time to be able to know that Julia was being troubled. Julia shouldn’t hate the others too much as they didn’t want to risk their jobs by going up against someone backed by a royal.

"The pay for personally serving the queen is good but it is not enough that you can throw money into buying new clothes for your siblings. I would just take what the queen is offering if I were you. Why hold your head so high?" Lynn questioned, shaking her head at Julia.

It wouldn’t be the first time she had witnessed a maid turning down help. Perhaps Julia was one of the maids who thought they should have everything new too instead of getting what was good though it was second-hand.

The dresses Lynn wore when she wasn’t tending to the queen were cheap from a stall in the town market. They were all beautiful and lasted quite a long time. She had a good eye to go through the dresses and pick what was good. It helped to save money to be used on other things.

Julia rolled her eyes as Lynn only bored her. She had been spoiled and got a glimpse of what it was like to have fine things. Why would she ever want anyone’s things at this point?

It was quite annoying that Lynn had somehow become close to the queen and took the spot that she wanted. Her job was just to give the queen tea and nothing more, but Julia wanted to be closer. To be the only one the queen trusted so Grant could be proud and to do that, she would need to get rid of Lynn.

"Maybe it is time that I make a friend in the palace. Do you mind if we meet in secret tonight? Just between us so the others don’t want to join? I am not ready to speak to a group yet," said Julia.

Lynn smiled as her talk with Julia was finally paying off. The queen would be happy to learn that Julia was opening up to them. "Of course. I am great at keeping secrets. The queen is coming out so we best hurry. The day must go perfectly for her."

"I am ready to go," Hazel said as she exited the bathroom. "My guests must be arriving now and I can’t keep them waiting."

Hazel led the way out of her room toward the room she had picked to hold a gathering. It was a very special day because she had changed who was invited to the palace today. Some might call her crazy for not just inviting daughters of nobles, but Hazel was certain that this would pay off in the future.

How were the people to continue caring for the Castros if they felt the Castros didn’t care for them? Doing this and the festival that Tobias was holding should put the people in a good mood.

"It would be lovely if the king could make a surprise visit to the gathering," said Lynn.

"It would but I would rather that he not show. It might make a few of the ladies uncomfortable or some might forget who they sit before and flirt with him. I’d like to avoid both. Besides, it would also be uncomfortable for my husband. To be surrounded by so many women. Maybe it is not a bad idea," Hazel said as she wanted to see him uneasy. "No, I shouldn’t."

Lynn smiled. "It is quite cute how you speak of teasing the king. You have a lovely marriage. If only you could hear all the stories going around about you and King. There are still so many assumptions about how you fell in love."

"It is only natural that they are still guessing. Since going to the gates on the day of the coronation, I haven’t spoken to anyone outside the palace. Should I sneak out?" Hazel wondered out loud.

"Of course not, Your Majesty!" Lynn exclaimed, fearing that the king would have her head for allowing the queen to sneak out. "It might be better to plan a day out with the king."

"It sounds like my dear husband might have given you a warning behind my back. Whatever it was, don’t listen to him. I am not a fool to sneak out by myself or just with my maids. I would do it with Kenneth Henson," Hazel replied.

The letter was sent and when Linda was to return home, Kenneth should be on his way here to speak with Hazel about him being a guard for a short time. Just long enough for her to visit her family outside the palace and then she wouldn’t bother Kenneth.

Hazel’s thoughts about Kenneth were interrupted by the sight of women she had seen walking around the palace these days. She had not invited them to the gathering and on such an important day, why were they in the palace?

Surely their fathers didn’t think Hazel had that kind of a heart to let them join the women she invited today? Wasn’t it about time these women gave up since Tobias wasn’t paying them any attention?

Hazel had overhead some being frustrated with Tobias not speaking to the women. It was hard to understand to those who weren’t aware that Tobias was spending each night in her bedroom unless she kicked him out. Anyone looking to sneak into his bedroom to seduce him would find the bed empty.

Hazel hoped for the women to continue on their way, but she was once again reminded that they lacked shame as the two stepped in her path and curtsied, followed by a greeting.

"Your Majesty."

Hazel looked down upon the two who were so calm with each other despite the fact they were after the same man. "You may rise and make your way out of the palace," she ordered the two.
