Chapter 207: Start of rumours (2)

"The next ball isn’t until the start of a new season and then for the King’s birthday. I don’t see it as reasonable to keep holding balls for the sake of giving nobles something to attend. Unless there is a victory in war, I am not holding a ball before it is time. There are plenty of balls being held around the town and there is a festival coming," said Hazel.

Hazel took a deep breath after her long answer to Tabitha’s idea to please the nobles.

"The people are just as important for us as having the nobles on our side," she added.

"It is interesting to hear you say that as a woman born with a silver spoon in her mouth. Before becoming queen, did you think of mixing with commoners or thought about what they needed?" Tabitha questioned though she knew the answer.

"I can admit that I never thought about anything concerning the kingdom before now. I am in a position where I can help others and I am starting to notice what needs to be changed. I should look around rather than turn blind eye to the state of the kingdom," Hazel replied.

Hazel would never pretend like she was concerned about the state of the people all her life. She could easily turn a blind eye to those not considered part of her circle but that was not the queen she was aiming to be.

Hazel thought herself to be evil as she believed the queen who turned a blind eye to things that needed her attention would be what Tabitha once was.

Tabitha faked a smile to continue with their agreement to get along. "There are still parties you must hold before then. They can be simple so you don’t have to put too much money into it. Never go too lavish as people may talk. I’ve already given you the names of the women you must invite. They are relatives of men in the court."

"Thank you. For the festival, I hope that you and Jeffrey would be open to traveling with us so the people can see us outside of the palace. Even if you do not get out of the carriage. The princess would also enjoy it. She often asks about the town," said Hazel.

"I will think about it," Tabitha answered.

"Very well. So..." Hazel trailed off, not knowing what else to speak about with Tabitha. She had heard enough for the day and now the room was starting to feel uncomfortable.

Hazel could thank Tabitha for one thing which was for distracting her from thinking about Lynn for an hour.

"Have you been taking the medicine the doctor prepared for you? We are all hoping to hear news about a prince soon."

"Or princess," Hazel added as neither mattered to her. She knew what the palace was looking forward to but she thought of how a princess might feel in the future after learning a prince was wanted. Hazel would make it known from the start that she wanted both.

"Or a princess. Forgive me. It is just that having a prince will make your position in the palace a bit more secure. I saw the young women walking around the palace. I’ve dealt with it in the past and nothing feels more satisfying than their faces when it is announced that you are pregnant. Do well with it," Tabitha advised Hazel.

Hazel nodded her head but inside she wished they would move on from speaking about children. The pressure was off her shoulders recently and now it was coming back.

"That must be Linda," Hazel said, excited after hearing a knock at the door. Knowing Linda was here was enough to change her mood before she stressed over a child.

"Your Majesty," Linda greeted Hazel with a curtsy. "Lady Tabitha."

Linda was surprised by how quiet the room was when she entered as she had expected there to be a bit of arguing heard. She hadn’t witnessed it in the past but from what Hazel described, Linda had thought of the relationship between the two as two kingdoms at war. ƒree𝑤ebnσvel.com

"It is good to see you, Linda. You look splendid. I must know the name of your dressmaker as it is time for Sofia to have a few new dresses as she is growing so fast," Tabitha said, watching as Linda approached the table.

Tabitha enjoyed how Linda walked with grace. It was truly a shame that Linda did not get to show off in the selection and then marry a man worthy of her hand. Linda was a well-behaved lady from a good family. She would make a fine daughter-in-law for someone.

"I will need to speak to my mother as she employs a few and I am not certain who made this dress. Nothing compares to the dresses made by the royal dressmakers. You two have taken over the room with your beauty," Linda complimented the two.

Linda sat closer to Hazel as she always did and to show she was on Hazel’s side. Anyone trying to bully her friend was considered an enemy in her eyes. It didn’t matter what title that person carried.

"The dressmaker would love to hear your compliments. He was a little down in spirits for a few weeks because he thought his work wasn’t loved. I hope you go around the town to show off your look today. You may end up with a few proposals," Tabitha teased.

"Oh, I am going home after this. Perhaps another day I might wear it again for a trip to the town. Forgive me Hazel as I meant to ask how you are fairing with all that has happened," Linda said, turning the attention to Hazel.

"I am doing well now. I am going to wait for those in charge of discovering what happened to come to me. I was worrying everyone with my appearance from crying too much. I don’t want to trouble them further," Hazel answered.

"The men from the court are smart so they shall be able to piece together what happened. Linda, what did you think of the queen’s first party? We need to make note of what went right or wrong," Tabitha said, pushing a paper she had Hazel give her to Linda.

Hazel tapped her fingers on her leg out of sight of Tabitha and Linda. While she didn’t exactly care if Tabitha was kind to her, Hazel couldn’t get rid of feeling jealous to see Tabitha smile at another young woman but be so cold to her.

Hazel had always thought she would get along with her in-laws and have one big happy family. That dream was shattered from the beginning upon meeting Tabitha.

Again Hazel felt like a fool for being jealous when it concerned her best friend. She would never stop Linda from interacting with Tabitha to end her jealousy as any woman around their age would love the opportunity to speak to the former queen.

Hazel let the two talk about the party and looked out the window to enjoy the view. How could there be such a beautiful day after horrible news in the palace?
