Chapter 206: Start of rumours (1)

"Welcome, Lady Henson. The queen awaits you in her room. I will escort you there," said Julia.

"Thank you," Linda replied, following Julia after. "Is Hazel doing well? After what happened last night. I’ve been thinking on the long ride here that I should have brought some of her favourite things to cheer her up. I am terrible at comforting someone when death is involved."

"The queen is doing much better. She is currently seated with Lady Tabitha-"

"The king’s mother?" Linda exclaimed, covering her mouth with her hand. "My apologies for my reaction. Then is she fine with sitting with Lady Tabitha?"

"Yes."

Linda couldn’t believe it until she saw Hazel sitting with Tabitha and they were both in one piece. Had grieving affected Hazel so badly that she was somehow on good terms with Tabitha?

’Hopefully, this has pushed the two to be better,’ Linda thought.

If Hazel and Tabitha started to get along, it was one less person Linda had to ask her brothers to keep an eye on when they came into the palace.

’I just need grandfather to get the court to back off.’

"Your Majesty."

Linda looked away from the floor she had been staring at while lost in thought and looked up at the king walking toward her with a man she had not seen before. Linda curtsied just as Julia and those around her did.

"Linda, you’re here again. Does that mean that your brothers or father is also here?" Tobias inquired, looking around for the annoying bunch.

"Only Liam is here and my father hopes to come later to speak to Hazel. He thinks it would be good to have her leave the palace for a moment to be around her parents or stay with us. He will personally accompany her," Linda answered.

"It is unfortunate that at a time like this when you are still meant to be enjoying the beginning of your marriage and reign something like this happens. I will do my best to cheer up Hazel. Maybe walk with her to one of the gardens she likes," Linda said, her gaze going to the people passing by her and Tobias after.

The looks were weird but Linda thought she was mistaken.

"That would be good. I am thinking of changing one of the gardens to be named after her. Have a statue made of her there. I want to do anything that would make her happy right now. For all the time you put into coming here to spend time with her, I owe you. If there is ever something you want other than you know who, please come to me," Tobias offered.

Like Hazel’s maids, Tobias was in great debt to Linda as Linda had stopped focusing on getting married and stayed by Hazel’s side. From what he saw so far, Linda hadn’t changed after Hazel became queen. She didn’t start to request something from Hazel as others did.

Hazel had relatives sending her letters to the palace requesting help for personal matters. Tobias was ready to respond to the relatives he hadn’t met at the wedding but Hazel stopped him.

"I will," Linda lied as it was something she couldn’t do. If there was something she needed, she would go to Hazel.

Linda had plenty of conversations with Tobias but it was still strange that he was Hazel’s husband and she had no plans of having any private talk with the king. If she did, Tobias would find her brothers hovering around her.

"I heard that Hazel is sitting with Lady Tabitha. Based on your reaction I am not the only one worried about it. Excuse me, but is there something I did to be receiving odd looks from some of the people walking by? Or is it meant for you?" Linda asked, no longer able to ignore the looks.

Linda looked down at the space between her and Tobias. It was more than appropriate for no one to get any ideas about them or was it because of the maid’s passing that everyone was trying to find some news from whom the king spoke with?

Tobias joined in watching those passing them and as soon as he did, they averted their eyes. "How am I to know what goes on in the heads of the people here? This is a strange place."

"You’re the king. You’re supposed to know," said Dominic Carson.

"I am too busy to be in all of your heads. The only person I am interested in knowing what goes on with them is my wife. Hazel must be wondering where you are so I won’t keep you. Also, if you have thoughts about marriage, this one here is single and his mother would be happy if you considered him," Tobias said, pointing to Dominic. ƒrēenovelkiss.com

As good as it was to have another childhood friend in the palace, Tobias wanted Dominic to find something else to do instead of hiding from his mother here.

Linda smiled instead of replying as she had no interest in the king’s friend. At least, not this one. She had to move on but it wouldn’t be with one of the king’s friends. "I must get to Hazel now. Please excuse me."

Linda made way for the king to continue on his way and then followed Julia once more. She sighed in relief when the conversation was over.

Linda laughed as she thought about how awkward it would have been if Liam was around when Tobias suggested that she courted his friend.

Julia looked over her shoulder at Linda. It seemed that there was something growing between the king and the lady. Grant would be pleased to know that everything was going as he wanted. All she needed to do was get the maids who witnessed the interaction to start spreading rumours about the two.

Linda cleared her throat. "I’m sorry if I startled you with my laughter. I was thinking of something funny."

"You didn’t startle me," Julia answered.

"Good. I don’t need anyone thinking that I am losing my mind. It is already being said since I am wasting my season to wed. I am almost tempted to carry this on until I become a spinster to see them be shocked. Don’t follow my rebellious ways," Linda advised Julia.

"I don’t think you should do that milady. You come from a good family so you should wed at an appropriate time. Think of your family rather than the pleasure of upsetting the town. You shouldn’t disappoint them," said Julia.

If Linda made up her mind to get married late, Grant might take his frustrations out on anyone but Linda. Julia didn’t want to be the person around him when he was furious.

"I will never disappoint them. I am in luck to come from a family that does not want to see me wed so soon. I hope I am not boring you with this. Your mind must be focused on Lynn," Linda said, worried she might have upset Julia.

"It is not. I have stopped thinking about Lynn so I don’t mess up serving the queen. It is what Lynn would have wanted. You have a beautiful bracelet," Julia noted, remembering that she once saw someone she hated wearing it.

"Thank you. It is a bit out for my age but I find it beautiful," Linda replied.
