The King's Unbreakable Wife-Chapter 221: A crack (2)
Chapter 221: A crack (2)
"It isn’t your place to question me about what happens between me and your mother. The woman is dramatic-"
"She is not. You can lie to me about anyone else but not my mother," Liam replied. This wasn’t some stranger they were talking about. "She’s normally always smiling even when she has to hear us speaking about fighting. She puts up with all the men in the army walking around the land, yet the only time she seems down is after your visits."
"Liam," Grant warned.
"Grandfather," Liam answered.
It was something Liam noticed a few times but after a recent visit from his grandfather, he had caught his mother looking a little troubled. Tessa always said that Grant was a man who liked tradition so they should ignore the things he said as he meant no harm but clearly, he was causing harm.
"Do you not like her? My mother," Liam said, wanting an honest answer. He had kept his brothers and father out of it until he spoke with Grant.
"It doesn’t matter whether I like her. That is for your father to do. I would like to know what it is your mother said to turn you against me. You have it wrong as it is your mother who has always disliked me," said Grant.
Liam laughed, not because he found Grant’s words to be funny, but due to the fact it should have been easy to tell Grant didn’t like his mother. Why did it need to take so many years to figure it out?
Was it because he was grown now and could freely question what he saw?
"Each time you come here my mother either tries to please you or she tries to find something to keep her busy until you are gone. I have also noticed that there is some tension between you and father. Now you want Linda to stay away from Hazel, the one friend we can trust around her. Are you bored?" Liam asked.
After having to retire from war, was Grant now having trouble finding something to do with his time and was lashing out at those close to him? It had to end now before the relationships Grant had with his family ended.
Grant laughed, entertained that his grandson was questioning him. He would give Kenneth a pass since that was his son but Liam had no room to speak even as the eldest son. "You should have stayed quiet like you always do. I am the one to get you where you are now."
"I think it was the work of my father and the Henson’s that came before you. You weren’t the one to start the army our family has. I respect you for all your achievements, but I love my mother. Anyone who hurts her will die by my sword," Liam warned.
It wouldn’t have come to this if not for how emotional he saw his mother. Tessa rarely cried. She was smiling before them even in the past when their father went out to war and bad news was coming back. Yet a short visit from Grant made it hard for her to hide her feelings.
"You are confused, Liam. I heard that you hit your head during one of the training days. I will consider that as why you are speaking to me like this now. Go for your sister and bring her back here. Have a servant take care of the invitations. No, you were right. I don’t like your mother," Grant said, deciding to be honest.
He did not need to continue putting up the act. Grant wasn’t getting any younger so why continue to hide what he liked or didn’t like?
"I am going to tell my father about this. Linda won’t be returning to you. There is much for her to do today so please, see your way out of our home. Her marriage and friendship with Hazel concern only our parents. Excuse me," Liam said, standing up from the chair.
If Liam didn’t leave now, he might do something bad. It might not be something he regretted since he would be defending his mother, but he didn’t want to fight Grant with Linda around. Linda didn’t need to know about all the tension in the family these days.
"From this moment on, you are cut off from me. Don’t expect my help just because you are my grandson. You are too much like that mother of yours. You could have achieved something great if you listened to me. Great titles-"
"The only title I need is being a knight," Liam interjected.
Like his brothers, Liam was following his father’s lead. Their family had enough influence for him to get titles if that was what he wanted but he settled on being a knight.
"I don’t want more than I need," Liam added. "It is time for you to go."
’Very well," Grant agreed to leave. "I won’t stay where I am not wanted. I look forward to seeing you regret this in the future. Tell Linda that I will see her soon. She loves her grandfather and there is nothing you can do to get her to stop."
"You shouldn’t underestimate how much we love our parents. I will tell her of your departure. Try not to stall with leaving," Liam said as Linda could return any minute now.
"The disrespect," Grant chuckled, humoured by this more than angry. With his plans and what he would get, Liam would come crawling back to him in the future.
"Where are you two going? I am finished," Linda announced. She moved fast to put away the invitations and ran back to finish the conversation.
"Grandfather forgot he had something important to do today so he must leave now. There was more mother left us to do for her so we should get to it. Goodbye Grandfather," Liam said as he moved to stand beside Linda.
"Linda, whenever you want to talk to me or your grandmother, come visit anytime. I will send a carriage for you and please, take my advice to stay out of the palace. There is too much trouble there that you shouldn’t be around. Tell your mother I stopped by," Grant said.
Liam held back from questioning his grandfather once more and more importantly, hitting him. Just like Grant had cut him off, Liam was cutting off his grandfather. Until Grant could apologize to his mother, the relationship they once had would not be the same.
Linda was disappointed to see Grant leave already but ecstatic to see her grandmother any day she wanted. "Where did grandfather say he had to go?"
"I forgot," Liam answered.
Linda glared at Liam for leaving her in the dark. "Why do mother and father keep leaving me with you? Go away, Liam." frёeweɓηovel.coɱ
