Chapter 220: A crack (1)

"Grandfather! I wasn’t told that you would be visiting today," Linda said, surprised to see Grant standing before her. "My parents aren’t home. Only Liam is here with me while the others take over training."

"I came to see you," Grant replied.

"Oh. What for? I don’t need to go to the palace today," Linda answered, still confused as to why he was there. It was a little late for him to be thinking of escorting her to the palace.

"Can’t I come see you when I miss you?" Grant questioned, pretending to be sad.

"Of course you can. It has been long since we’ve all sat together for dinner or just to have fun. Will you be staying long enough to stay here for dinner? We can call for grandmother to come," Linda suggested.

These days Linda was only seeing Grant and not her grandmother. It was odd how her grandmother was always too busy to visit and then too busy if Linda went to her. It was like they weren’t welcomed at their grandparents home.

"She is enjoying doing a bit of flower arrangement at home today so we shouldn’t disturb her. Have you been practising?" Grant asked as it seemed like Linda was at home doing nothing while her peers were doing what was needed to get married.

Linda smiled to distract her grandfather. Flower arrangement didn’t suit her along with most of the useless skills she was taught leading up to finding a husband. She was born into a family tied to an army so maybe that was why. "I will try later," she answered. "Should I get Liam?"

"Why?" Grant replied, taking a seat. His grandsons were not of any use to him right now. Linda was the one deserving his attention when he visited.

"Well, he might be a little confused or hurt if he finds out that you are here but we didn’t send for him. They have been looking forward to spending time with you and grandmother as well. I will-"

"Do not move, Linda. I will see him before I leave. I am here for you right now. I always see the boys more than I see you," said Grant.

Linda still glanced at the door. Liam wasn’t that far away so he could walk out and see them together. She loved being with her grandparents by herself but Liam was the only other person at

home so he shouldn’t be alone when they had guests.

"I’m hearing that there is a rumour about you going around in the palace. Since when did you have something-"

"I am not the king’s lover," Linda quickly denied the rumour.

Grant raised his brows, feigning surprise. "Lover?"

"Is that not what you heard?" Linda questioned, biting her lips as she might have brought up something unnecessarily. Her brothers hadn’t mentioned anything about it so it couldn’t have been a well-spread rumour.

Hazel might have fulfilled her promise and got the rumour to stop only for her to bring it up.

"I did not," Grant lied. "Why would anyone think that?"

"It is just the maids speaking because they have nothing better to do. They have seen me speaking with the king but I do that because he is Hazel’s husband. Am I to run away from him when he addresses me? It is not like we touch when we speak," Linda said, still in disbelief at how that turned into her being Tobias’s lover.

Grant found the situation truly wasted as it would be the perfect start to getting Linda considered to be with the king but once again, she was stuck thinking about Hazel. "How unfortunate. Where is your father now?"

"He didn’t say where he was going," Linda replied. "He just told us that he might not be back until tomorrow night."

"Hmm."

Grant knew exactly where Kenneth was as Julia had sent him a note that Kenneth was escorting Hazel out of the palace. Then to his surprise, Kenneth returned and left with the king in a hurry. He was well aware Julia had done her part so it meant something happened to the queen. Kenneth would have all the answers.

"Would you like to visit the queen? She’s been having trouble dealing with the maid that killed herself," Grant said, attempting to find his answers through Linda. There was a bright side to her being so close to Hazel.

"The maid that was killed," Linda corrected Grant. She was going with what Hazel believed regardless of what the court concluded.

"Linda, it’s best that you don’t follow the queen’s theories and think that the maid was not a thief. I heard what happened. The queen is just-"

"The queen is Hazel," Linda said, refusing to let anyone write Hazel off as crazy. "We should trust her word."

"You’ll learn a good lesson about trust in the future. I don’t want you speaking of that maid. You can’t follow Hazel all the time and I am starting to think that it’s best if you don’t visit the palace for a while. You’re starting to change like interrupting me not long ago," Grant said, only letting the disrespect pass because it was Linda.

"What is happening here?"

Linda looked to the door where Liam stood. She was grateful that he came as her conversation with Grant was getting awkward again. "We were speaking about Hazel and the maid. Then he thought that I shouldn’t visit the palace."

"Your brother would agree with me seeing that they didn’t want you there at first," Grant said, knowing the outcome as Liam hated the palace.

Grant couldn’t have Linda around the palace now when Hazel was going to lose every child she had. He had to wait for the perfect moment to suggest that Linda would become the king’s woman since she had done well in the selection next to Hazel.

"Leave her be," Liam answered, surprising both Linda and Grant.

"Liam, are you ill?" Linda asked, standing up to touch Liam’s face. "You don’t feel like you might be sick."

"Father allowed you to go there so I have no say in stopping you. One of us is always in the palace when she goes there. Linda, didn’t mother leave you to put away the invitations she had sent here? You should do it before she returns," said Liam.

"Right. I forgot. Excuse me, grandfather," Linda said and then rushed to do as she was told.

Grant was amused by the obvious attempt to get Linda away from him. "You don’t have enough servants to put away invitations? Linda is a lady."

"It is what mother asked her to do. I am free to speak while Linda is gone," Liam said, sitting down where Linda previously sat.

’It was obvious that you were trying to get her away from me. Have I done something to upset you, Liam? I like to think that I treated you well. I’ve ignored that as the oldest you have not gotten married and started a family. Was it something your mother said?" Grant asked as Tessa would certainly turn the children against him.

"Again, it was a simple task that mother asked her to do, but since you brought up my mother, do you mind telling me why her mood changes when you come around?" Liam asked.
