The King's Unbreakable Wife-Chapter 231: The time is right (3)
Chapter 231: The time is right (3)
"I see now why you’ve been getting cosy in the court. You’ll end up dead with all those whispering things in your ear if you don’t stop now. You’re lucky that I am holding back to allow your son to talk some sense into you," said Tobias.
Grant was still amused by how Tobias spoke. "You’re not attacking me because of that? Silly boy," he shook his head. "You are not attacking me because you fear having to go up against my army. Should my son join me, you’ll have no choice but to give in as you cannot afford to lose men at this time."
"What if I were to side with those barbarians as long as they would make one of my grandsons-"
"You would betray your kingdom for a chair?" Tobias questioned, finding it harder to not attack Grant now.
What Grant was saying now could have him killed for wanting to go to the enemy. Tobias could explain that the throne was not as great as it seemed but he knew this would fall on deaf ears.
Men like Grant saw power but what they didn’t see was what had to be sacrificed. Once you sat on the throne, there was no going back to a normal life.
"It is not just a chair. It is a start for my family’s name to be attached to something better. I preferred when you were the bastard to sleep around. Why did you go with the ridiculous idea of being with one woman? Linda will be good to you," Grant said. fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓
Linda was raised well and quite obedient. She was the perfect wife for a king to take.
Linda’s refusal to get married to just any man who came to court her had worked well in Grant’s favour as she remained unwed to be offered to the king. Getting her to snap out of finding a man to love her was the hard part.
Grant believed that in time Linda would come to love Tobias. Linda had witnessed how well Tobias treated Hazel so she should want to take it for herself. She would if she was truly a Henson.
Grant had started to come to the conclusion that his disobedient grandson Liam did not belong to Kenneth as Tessa must have cheated. He wouldn’t put it past Tessa.
Tobias laughed as it was ridiculous that Grant was seriously offering Linda to not be a wife but a mistress to the king. Linda was a young woman deserving to be someone’s wife, not a pawn in Grant’s plans.
Tobias would be against what Grant was doing if it had been another man that Grant was offering Linda as a mistress. It wasn’t that long ago that Grant had been inviting Edgar to his winter party in hopes that Edgar would take Linda as his wife. Since when had Grant changed from Edgar to him?
Tobias had a headache trying to think back to the time of the selection. He couldn’t remember a time that Grant wasn’t pleased that Linda wasn’t chosen. All the Hensons seemed pleased but then again, he wasn’t looking at how anyone felt at that time. His focus had been on Hazel.
"I will give you some time to share your answer with me. Don’t think that speaking with my son shall scare me. Like you, I rule the Hensons. There will never be a day that I am afraid of what my son wishes to do. Hmm, I haven’t seen the queen in long-"
"Don’t you fucking dare approach her," Tobias warned, standing up as Grant mentioned Hazel was the last straw.
How could Grant suggest bringing another woman into their marriage and then thinking of going to Hazel? Smiling as he said it.
"Don’t get so riled up. I still care for the girl. She is like a granddaughter to me as you said. Perhaps another day I will speak to her. I must give you some time to think and then tell her of your plans. You know where to find me," Grant said and then stood up.
Grant did one final look around that room and then walked toward the door. He had done what he came for and now he could leave. Until he received Tobias’s answer, he wouldn’t return to the palace.
Grant knew that Tobias was at least smart enough to be aware of the fact he couldn’t harm a single hair on his head. Tobias wouldn’t want war amongst the men who fought for him when they were to be working together against the kingdom’s enemies.
Grant had to thank the timing of tension at the border growing because Tobias couldn’t do anything.
Tobias grabbed the rock from his table and threw it at the door. Nothing was more frustrating than not being able to kill Grant now. Grant was going to be a greater problem than the men Tobias had his eyes on to get out of the court.
"That fucking bastard," he cursed.
It was still unbelievable that a man like Grant who spent many of his years protecting the kingdom would even think of going to the enemy just to get his family inside the palace. The Hensons were always going to be remembered for their efforts in winning wars. Grant was too greedy now.
Tobias dropped all his plans for the day and headed to the door as he had to see Kenneth right away. Tobias couldn’t wait to send a message for Kenneth to come here and then await Kenneth’s arrival. This was too urgent for that.
Should Grant truly start a war so he could claim the throne, Tobias needed to have the other Hensons on his side.
"I would need to get Edgar’s men to join and then call upon Rafael," Tobias started to plan. He was in luck that those close to him would be able to help him go against the army Grant had.
Still, Tobias didn’t want it to come to war as this was not the best time to be losing men on their side.
"Your Majesty-"
"Prepare my carriage right now and double the guards around the queen today. She is not to have any visitors. Not even," Tobias stopped as he felt conflicted over stopping Hazel from speaking to Linda until he talked with Kenneth. "Inform her that I said she shouldn’t take any visitors today and tell her that I will be out of the palace."
"Yes, Your Majesty."
After meeting with Kenneth, Tobias might then have to consult with Edgar to start working on a way to deal with Grant.
