The King's Unbreakable Wife-Chapter 230: The time is right (2)
Chapter 230: The time is right (2)
The next day, Tobias sat in his study, looking over the news of Edgar’s marriage that was sent to him. He had confirmed from the church that Edgar was married and it was no lie that was going around.
Edgar had caused even more trouble by killing the father of his bride. Tobias was looking to remove the late baron’s title not kill him. It wasn’t stated what had happened for Edgar to kill the baron but Tobias could make a good guess that someone had pissed off Edgar.
While Hazel was excited over the news and picking out gifts, Tobias still failed to believe it as this wasn’t like Edgar. Of all the women in the town, why would his friend choose to marry the daughter of Desmond when Edgar hated Desmond?
Tobias wasn’t ready to pick out gifts for the two and jump at celebrating that Edgar was finally in the marriage club as there was something to discover.
A knock at the door interrupted his plan of getting to the bottom of Edgar’s marriage.
"Come in," he gave the person outside permission to enter. "Grant, this is a surprise. Why are you in the palace?"
"It has become like my second home. It has been so long since I stepped foot inside this room. You have made it so different from your father,"’ Grant said, looking around the large study. It didn’t compare to the study he had at home but it was still grand.
It could easily impress those not used to grand things.
Grant took a seat on the chair on the other side of Tobias’s desk. He had waited long enough to gather supporters over the years and now it was time to make his move. This was the year that Linda would sit in the palace and then later become the queen.
Grant had given Hazel the gift of sitting on the throne for as long as she did and now it was time for her to go. She should’ve been gone by now with all the tricks he did but she was trying to hold on.
Her mistake.
Tobias was confused by Grant sitting before him as normally Kenneth would be the Henson coming to have a word with him. "Why have you come to me, Grant? I am more familiar with Kenneth seeking me out."
"So I am told. My son doesn’t share why he comes here to see you so I came on my own to speak. Do you want to keep the Hensons loyal to you, Tobias?" Grant asked.
Tobias didn’t like the way that Grant causally addressed him since they weren’t close. He allowed it with Kenneth since he owed Kenneth and with Linda because of her close ties to Hazel, but not Grant. They weren’t close enough for Grant to just refer to him as Tobias.
"Your Majesty," Tobias corrected Grant. "And I was under the impression that your family was already loyal to me. Is there something that I need to know?"
"My son’s loyalty and mine are different. I am not yet convinced that you are a man I wish to be loyal to. To get me on your side, you must do something for me. Take Linda as your woman," Grant suggested, revealing his plans.
He had waited too long for the moment to come and now, his plans would be revealed. The time was right with how Hazel had failed to bear an heir and the court was making their complaints heard. It was easy for those not on his side to give into Tobias having Linda by his side.
Tobias laughed as it had to be a joke that Grant wanted him to take Linda, Hazel’s best friend, as his woman. Tobias wiped the tears from his eyes only for more to escape as he laughed. "I didn’t know you were such a funny man, Grant. How kind of you to come here to share a joke but I am busy."
"Girls are continuing to go missing so I cannot sit here and tell jokes with you. If-"
"I am quite serious, Tobias," Grant continued with his way of addressing the king. "Take her as your woman and gain my support. Then many in the court will follow your every word. If you please me, no one will be able to touch you. You will have my full support with war and going after your enemies."
Tobias still couldn’t believe the request that Grant was making. It was ridiculous coming from a Henson of all people.
Grant knew better than Tobias about just how close Hazel and Linda were to each other. Tobias had also overheard the two friends referring to each other’s family as their family. Neither would want to have Linda become his woman. Even if Hazel were to be for it, Tobias did not want to.
Tobias hadn’t changed when it came to not taking any women by his side.
"Grant, I don’t know what you have drunk to come to me with this plan, but I advise you to get up from where you sit and go elsewhere to clear your mind," said Tobias.
"I am not drunk. I am tired of you not wanting to believe it. I want my granddaughter in the palace," Grant said confidently. What part of him showed that he was drunk? "She will make an excellent choice seeing as you will get an army. Think carefully about it and come up with an answer soon. I have waited long enough for this and I will not be patient anymore."
Tobias now started to take Grant seriously since Grant was not joining in laughing at the awful joke. He wanted to throw Grant out of the palace for what he was suggesting. "Are you out of your mind, Grant?" He yelled.
Last that Tobias knew, Kenneth was happy that Linda didn’t get married and became queen. Why now was this suddenly being proposed? Was it that Kenneth and Grant wanted different things? Linda entering the palace to become the king’s woman didn’t sound like something Kenneth would agree to. ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom
Tobias laughed as along with news of Edgar’s marriage this was a joke. He never thought he would see a day when he would have to call Grant a fool and stop him from speaking to Hazel.
He couldn’t have Grant ruin Hazel’s friendship or did Linda know of this plot?
"You don’t want to become my enemy, Tobias. The men against you as king have done well in offering things that I want. I might just help your uncle to sit on the throne. You and Hazel should be on my side. I shall make sure that nothing happens to the two of you if you do as I say," Grant said, not phased by how Tobias looked at him.
"Grant, if you value your life, you will not say another word and get out of my sight. I will pretend that this was just one big joke. Hazel is like a granddaughter to you. You have to be out of your mind to offer Linda to be at my side. Something that I would never do even if it was to save my life," said Tobias.
Grant smiled as he thought about his memories with Hazel. She was like a granddaughter to him because of how much she had been around him in the past, but once again, it was blood that was important.
At the end of the day, she was not his true granddaughter so her sitting in the palace did nothing for him.
"I will give you time to think, Tobias. You mustn’t wait too long because I will join the side against you and get her in the palace some other way. If I were you, I would accept that offer as it is the only way to protect Hazel. Would you like to fight against my army?" Grant questioned, hinting that it would come to war if he didn’t get what he wanted.
Grant had powerful wealthy men on his side to go against Tobias. He hadn’t spent the last years sitting around doing nothing when there was much for him to gain. All of that planning led to this moment. All of Grant’s allies knew of what he was doing now and were awaiting good news.
"You must be thinking of going to Kenneth’s side to see where his loyalty stands. I am his father and the Hensons stick together. Think about whether you want to go against my army when you must be focused on the war brewing at the border. You won’t win the war at the border without my family helping you. Funny how much you need me, isn’t it?" Grant chuckled.
Tobias wasn’t humoured like Grant was. What Grant was doing was bold and was going to get him killed just for suggesting it. Though he would like to kill Grant now for thinking of betraying him and going to men who had no good plans for the kingdom, he couldn’t harm Grant now without speaking to Kenneth first.
