Chapter 68: 68. I Held a Demon for Thirty Seconds and Someone Else Got the Kill

Kruger went after Evelyn first because he thought she was the more dangerous threat up close. Rex could see in his Foresight that she was going to dodge the huge clawed hand that was coming toward her.

It wasn’t a strike but a grab. Kruger’s other hand was already on its way before she landed.

Rex got in between them.

He didn’t do it in a sneaky or smart way. He walked right into the path of Kruger’s follow-up swing and took the hit on his forearm.

Just before impact, he used telekinesis to make a tight shell around the bone to strengthen it. It was so strong that it sent him sliding back across the cobblestones, and his arm hurt from holding the shield against so much raw power, but he stayed on his feet.

He heard Evelyn make a sharp sound behind him. It wasn’t quite a gasp, but it was something more controlled than that.

Kruger looked at him.

Rex stared back, his arm hurting, and stood his ground.

"Again?" the demon said, its voice rough with shock and maybe even real interest. "You’re either really brave or really dumb."

"Both," Rex said. "Mostly dumb."

He had given Evelyn the two seconds she needed to get her bearings and start over. He also made sure that Elliot saw him take a blow meant for Evelyn, which was not a coincidence.

He could feel Elliot’s eyes on him from across the square.

Everything was based on something else.

But things were getting worse faster than he could handle them. Helena was once again on the move, but she was not casting.

Diana was on her feet, but without a weapon. Nothing was sufficient for Evelyn’s body, which was surviving on whatever it could find.

Rex could tell from the way she was standing that her tiredness stemmed from using her power, not from physical exhaustion, and that she had reached its limits, which she rarely did.

She had hit them.

"Fucking hell... do I have to work everything myself here?" Rex thought to himself.

Rex made the choice in a calm and quiet way. He wanted to keep up the image of someone who fought with people instead of above them, but Kruger was going to kill Evelyn in the next exchange, and the math was easy.

He used his telekinesis to wrap the force around Kruger’s whole body, from his ankles to his collarbones, without thinking about how much he was using or how much he needed. 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

He had never used his ability in such a big and complicated way in a real fight before, and keeping it going felt like trying to hold a river in place with his bare hands.

But it stayed.

Kruger pushed against the invisible grip with all the strength the demonic transformation had given him. His muscles bulged, and the heat coming from his skin grew stronger.

The cobblestones under his feet broke because he was fighting so hard.

Rex put both feet down and held on.

Evelyn, out of breath, stared at him from a few feet away. He had been expecting her to look suspicious, but she didn’t.

Her expression conveyed a complex mix of awe, understanding, and a hundred unasked questions.

For the first time, Rex let something real show through when he looked back at her. It was not manipulation or strategy, but the simple truth of what he was doing at that moment.

"Get behind me," he said. "You’ve done enough."

She didn’t argue.

He turned back to Kruger, holding the demon in place with all his strength, and extended both arms out to the sides. The pose was planned, and it made him look like a wall or a barrier, something that was in the way of the demon and the people behind him.

This was also the best place to gather telekinetic energy into a single, focused point, which was what he planned to use to end this.

He started to pull inward, bringing the force together and compressing it until it was aimed at the one point that his Foresight had shown him over and over again in every timeline as Kruger’s true weak point.

The top of the skull, where the horns had grown during the change, was still a little thinner than the rest of the bone because it had grown so quickly.

Rex focused on a single needlepoint of compressed force and got ready to drive it home.

Then, something moved in the shadows cast by the fallen building to his left.

"What the fuck is that...?!," Rex thought to himself.

Less than a second before it happened, he caught a glimpse of a shape falling from the second floor of a ruined building. His Foresight lit up with something completely new: a timeline that hadn’t existed until that moment.

A person in dark, tight-fitting clothes landed silently on the edge of the square. They ran three steps to get from the rubble to Kruger before anyone could react.

The weapon came from below. A short blade, pointing up, stabbed into the back of Kruger’s neck with the mechanical accuracy of someone who knew exactly what angle to use and how much force to use.

The blade didn’t just hurt. It found the exact spot where the spine and the base of the skull meet, the only place where a body that could heal from almost anything couldn’t make up for it in time, and it went through cleanly.

The skull of Kruger caved in.

The sound was wet and final, and then all of the demon’s muscles let go at once, making its body go limp. Rex’s telekinetic grip was the only thing keeping the huge shape from falling in any direction.

Instead of letting it crash into Evelyn or anyone else, he carefully lowered it.

Blood, dark, thick, and stinky, fell on the cobblestones and splattered on the front of Rex’s shirt. Some of it got to Evelyn.

And also... some of them got to the rubble where Helena was standing.

For a second, none of them moved.

Then the figure stood up straight from the crouch she had used to kill, pulled her blade free with a clean motion, and flicked the ichor off of it in a single, practiced arc.

She had short black hair that was cut close to her neck, and she wore dark, practical clothes that were made to be quiet and hidden in the dark.

She smiled and turned to face them. It wasn’t a threatening or cold smile. It was the smile of someone who was really a little embarrassed about being late.

"Sorry about that," she said in a light voice that was completely different from what she had just done. "I’ve been following that one for two days."

"It took me longer than I thought it would to get into position." She looked at Kruger’s body and then back at the group. "Looks like you had most of it under control..."

"I’m sorry that I’m late." She repeated what Rex said when he was late, and it felt kind of ironic.

"Who the fuck is this...?" Rex thought to himself while being confused.

The square was completely quiet.

Rex looked at her and saw how sure she was of herself and how well she had just put away her weapon. He felt his Foresight reaching out on its own, trying to figure out what would happen next.

It didn’t show him anything clear for the first time since he unlocked the ability. There are just many branching paths, all of them radiating out from this one moment.

This woman was not part of any of his plans.
