Chapter 100: If Only Doubt Could Turn Into Trust

After barely escaping Aether, Akasha stopped to catch her breath as she looked around the western mountainside.

“This should be far enough.”

The terrain was rather rugged for the foot of a mountain, the slope so steep that not a single human could be seen. Sighing in relief, Akasha found an appropriate rock and plopped onto it.

Now that she was out of the fire, her clever mind combed through what had occurred. Akasha recalled the earlier conversation with her sister.

“I didn’t think she’d still ask for my exclusive magic even without her memories....”

Before she lost her memories, her sister would passionately engage in thaumaturgical studies. It was to the point that she even attempted to make a scroll of her Legendary Magic.

There wasn’t any great purpose to it; it was just for fun.

Akasha once tried to copy her sister and put her magic into a scroll as well. Originally, Legendary Magics weren’t supposed to be made into scrolls to preserve their rarity, but it didn’t matter to these naive girls at the time.

The product of that effort was what she’d handed to her sister earlier–the unfinished construction circle of ‘White Night’.

“We were like that once.”

Looking back on it now, it had been a meaningless effort. Being able to use that magic and making it into something that could be used by others were two completely different things.

Akasha finished reminiscing and stood up. In front of her was the tokamak she’d obtained through the exchange.

Even if it was to her sister, handing over information about her exclusive magic left a bad aftertaste but what did it matter?

Right now, every second counted. She acquired a plant which was a big achievement itself. Her lips automatically curled up at the thought of being commended by the King, her lips automatically curled up.

“Ugh, better get back to it.”

Akasha used a transparency scroll on the tokamak, which instantly covered it in invisible paint made of elements.

She then pulled down her hood to cover her face so that she wouldn’t be seen where she was headed next.

“I guess this is where it is.”

Akasha arrived at a building that was damaged on the outside from the flooding.

The Louvoire– the next largest museum after the Empire’s National Museum.

It simply looked like a large exhibition, but in actuality, it housed the seal stone needed to bring the Demon King back to the present.

It was the Red Lodestone, an Elemental Stone molded by the Fire Elemental King.

“Really, hiding it away so well.”

Just then, a bunch of art pieces were marched out of the entrance. Akasha watched the procession carefully.

While doing so, she caught sight of a large crate on a carriage marked [To the National Museum].

It was unmistakable.

“There it is.”

Akasha’s grin stretched wide.

“How lucky.”

Originally, she had intended to ask Primus to have the beastkin raid Saliere County and smuggle the Lodestone away on the spot.

Now that was no longer necessary.

The National Museum was located at Tilette Academy, and that was where Rosemary was.

“Guess I didn’t even need to see it.”

She didn’t even need to cause a racket.

With the invisible tokamak in hand, Akasha slipped away.

**Lotte detailed most of what had happened until now to the household staff.

“So to get this straight... the white-haired lady wasn’t your friend but her twin sister, and your actual friend was away in beastkin territory for the last couple weeks and has just returned–is what you’re saying?”

“And that sister is someone significant enough to tame Fenrirs.”

Lotte easily nodded at the maids’ summary. The servants who heard this, on the other hand, appeared skeptical.

“So not only did she subdue them at once, she also tamed them.... That’s too much, Milady.”

“And a Fenrir is a Calamity. How could a monster like that show up here?”

It was a bit frustrating; she felt like the girl in those fables who cried wolf.

But this, too, was karma. She’d already lied to her family that Akasha was Aether with her hair dyed so it wasn’t out of the question for them not to believe her.

Just then, her father came running after having heard that the window of the study had broke. After seeing that the mess had been taken care of, Count Saliere sent the servants away to be left alone with Lotte.

Eyes sympathetic, her father spoke.

“I was already aware that you were lying since then.”

“Ah....”

Of course.

Her father and brother had seemed unusually quick to accept at the time. Inhaling sharply, Lotte avoided her father’s gaze.

The Saliere household had always valued honesty. Since she went against that, she was going to be punished.

“I’m sorry.”

“It isn’t to admonish you. I only want to know why you lied at the time. This is my assumption, but... there’s something with that girl only you know about, isn’t there?”

“......!”

Her father’s tone wasn’t one of rebuke; rather, it was a calm voice like he was soothing a child who broke a plate.

“And your friend as well.”

Lotte’s eyes widened at her father’s next words.

“I won’t necessarily question you about what happened, but keep this one thing in mind. If you want to trust your friend, then trust them without being swayed by others because that will be what’s best for both of you.”

“How did you.......”

“It’s quite apparent. I also went through something similar at your age.”

Her father smiled wryly. Lotte’s father, Count Saliere, was always like this.

Although he couldn’t possibly know about her situation, he noticed her troubles like an almighty deity and provided a solution. Is this what it was for parents to see through their children?

─ That’s how she’s always been. Her research takes precedence over her friends.

─ Same with the tokamak. She copied the design from someone in an elf village and completed it.

─ Why would she take off in the middle of the night and go to Pitchblende Mountain without telling you? Didn’t she come here for a reason?

Lotte chewed on her lip.

“... But what if I still have doubts?”

“I wouldn’t call that doubt between friends, merely curiosity. If you want to ask her something, then do so sincerely without causing misunderstandings.”

It was advice to engrave into her bones and flesh.

Because that was how Lotte’s father lived, he had been removed from central politics where slander was abound. But there were just as many people who genuinely appreciated and followed him for it.

“Then may I ask one more thing?”

“For my daughter, of course.”

“How should I ask in order to properly show my sincerity?”

“Hm.... good question. When I was in the army, first of all, we would scrub each other’s backs and continue our conversation from earlier in the day, with topics like how the commander was a bastard, who lost more hair and such.”

Lotte went ‘I see’ and nodded. It was a method that she could use as reference.

“Ah, speaking of your friend.”

“Aether....”

─ Your friend is a thieving bitch who steals other people’s research. Just think about Flare. Try to remember Miss Klais’ face when she got scooped.

It was all nonsense. A sister wouldn’t try to vilify her own sibling in front of a complete stranger.

It was her father who nudged her, but she had to be the one seizing the opportunity.

The black-haired, gold-eyed girl was walking over with light steps as if in a good mood. She didn’t have the tokamak but instead was carrying a large scroll as she headed this way.

Different from Akasha.

Someone so pure, who wasn’t very good at expressing emotions yet showed it through actions.

Her life saver, her tutor who would continue to be with her.

And there were many things she needed to ask that tutor. Lotte took off and headed forward.

**I was thrilled.

[Legendary Innate Magic ─ Incomplete scroll of ‘White Night’ (Bloom unit)]

I obtained a super rare scroll for the price of a tokamak. Gave a little and got a lot.

And the Legendary wasn’t simply a Legendary.

[▷(Description) White Night]

[A supreme magic that manipulates the designated target by putting them into a quasi-neutral state. Can be considered a Hybrid Magic where the Fire and Air Realms have been developed to the extreme. When the ‘sky’ is the target, it turns the atmosphere into multiple colors hence the name ‘White Night’.]

[□ This magic cannot be fully mastered at this time.]

[△ Reason : Only the being who meets a certain condition may make perfect use of this magic.]

Simply put, a technique that naturally generates plasma.

Creating plasma didn’t mean nuclear fusion would automatically occur, but the matter at least needed to enter into a plasma state for it to take place. I’d basically gotten my hands on a requirement for subjugating the Demon King.

The only thing was that it was in an incomplete state.

In the end, it was like that time with Flare. I had to work my ass off to develop it.

Anyway.... Was this going to be easy?

“It’ll work out somehow, I guess.”

I rolled up the scroll, steps light as I walked. Before I knew it, the Saliere mansion could be seen.

Ah, I left a huge mess come to think of it. I was kind of scared to go in.

Still, I had to apologize for the trouble I caused. I didn’t know Akasha well, but it was Aether’s sister’s fault, so...

“Haaa.”

Man, life was tiring, having to clean up after some unknown kid. I would’ve been pissed if I hadn’t been given this scroll.

“Aether!”

“Hm?”

Lotte came running in the distance. It wasn’t much compared to Akasha’s speed, but it was still fairly fast.

There wasn’t even time to say anything. Lotte got here in a flash and grabbed my hand while panting.

“What’s wrong? Something urgent come up?”

“We need to talk.”

“Oh, yes. We do.”

I had my excuses ready–about why I’d gone to the beastkin’s nation, where that Snowy1 came from when I definitely didn’t have a younger sister, etc.

I calmed Lotte, who was breathing heavily, and pointed to the mansion, indicating that we should talk inside.

Understanding my gesture, Lotte nodded and spoke confidently.

“Then, should we take a bath together?”
