The Magic Academy's Physicist-Chapter 230: You Have The Wrong Person (1)
Chapter 230: You Have The Wrong Person (1)
In the late of night when the stars in the sky were crying out.
Rosemary and Vermel had been in the room that Klais provided for hours putting their heads together.
The guards were roaming around outside, every one of them holding a White Night scroll just in case.
Contrary to their worries, Rosemary wasn’t causing trouble. She knew her manners, and her normal behavior was as lovely as her appearance.
Of course, as she had once been the princess of a nation.
“So, there’s a high probability that Iliad and Tilette will be run as a combined school starting next semester.”
After hearing Vermel’s explanation, Rosemary exclaimed in pure awe.
“You already took steps for that? All by yourself?”
The first time she saw him, he had been a clumsy elf who was only good at running away. But in just a month, he had progressed to the point of planning and acting independently.
Wasn’t it thanks to Aether in a way?
“As soon as winter ends, I’ll be going to Iliad immediately. With Freyr, too, of course. I’m going to carry out everything that I just told you one by one.”
“What about me? You’re just tossing me?”
“You can’t go even if you want to; they all know who you are.”
Rosemary let out a groan.
She did want to see sis, but her identity was already revealed.
It hadn’t been revealed to the public as to avoid social chaos, but the high nobles and the Imperial court knew that Rosemary was a Cataclysm.
What’s more, the Empire and Kaurelia were working closely together since the ‘Steam Rain’ incident.
So the elf country already knew who Rosemary was as well.
She’d obviously be turned away at customs. Unless she changed her face completely, she wasn’t going to be allowed into elf country.
“I can’t believe I won’t be able to see Aether.......”
It was truly a shame.
Still, it was a hundred times better than being killed by Gilach.
“Instead, I want you to stay here and stop the Demon Army coming down south.”
“What. You want me to betray my kind?”
“You said you can’t go back to where you were because of Summer Heaven anyway.”
“Hmm.”
To be honest, she was torn.
As much as it was to stop world destruction, how could she throw away the Demon Army that she had been part of for a long time?
It was difficult to decide. Her conscience was stinging like it was being poked by a large needle.
“What are you so hesitant about?”
“It’s because you don’t know anything.”
“Summer Heaven tried to drive you apart first.”
“But isn’t that what you’re doing?”
“I only told the truth.”
Rosemary hated Gilach as well, but that didn’t mean she could throw away the entire Demon Army. She had received too many favors from the Demon King to do so now.
It wasn’t that Vermel didn’t know how Rosemary was feeling either, so he carefully brought up the subject.
“Think about it carefully, Princess of Tarkenil. Who saved you from death?”
“The King.”
“No, the one who actually rescued you.”
“That would be Aether.”
What was he asking all of a sudden? Rosemary thought, but she just answered.
“And you naturally joined the Demon Army because of who?”
“Aether.”
“Who’s the person you like and respect most in the world?”
“Aether.”
“And if Aether and the Demon King were to fight, whose side are you going to be on?”
“Obviously Aether.... Ahhh!”
Rosemary’s complexion turned bright red.
She whipped her eyes around in panic.
“......Right, this is the Empire.”
That last comment had been super risky. If it had been heard by Spring or Summer Heaven who were deeply loyal to the King, she wouldn’t have been able to avoid being purged.
Thankfully, no one else besides Vermel heard it.
Calming herself, Rosemary threw a glare at Vermel.
“So you know how to use leading questions.”
“Still, that’s good enough, right?”
“What is?”
“You. It means you follow Aether more than the Demon King.”
“.......”
She did, come to think of it.
Rosemary’s value judgement was all based on Aether.
Being able to keep her life, first coming to serve in the Demon Army–it had all been thanks to Aether and Akasha’s help.
And so Rosemary entered the Demon Castle, and heard about the Demon King’s idea through the other Beasts.
Build a new world by the Golden-Eyed, for the Golden-Eyed, and only the Golden-Eyed.
The slogan of the Demon King had been like a strong liquor. For Rosemary who had been immature, one phrase was all it took to get her drunk.
─ So that living as a Golden-Eyed janitor will be a greater honor than living as the king of another species.
And she had worked so hard to revive the Demon King because of that.
“You decide what you’re going to do from now on. That’s not what’s important right now. Don’t forget; we’re allies until Aether returns to normal.”
“.......”
While Rosemary’s eyes showed her deep in thought–
Vermel thought now was the time and said something else that was shocking.
“If you can’t betray the Demon Army, then just give the country a heads up. You have that ability, no?”
Wait, ability?
“What do you mean ability....”
Rosemary was horrified.
“You, just how much do you know?”
She had guessed since the time he’d slip away here and there like a mouse–
But to think that he really knew about Scope.
She was starting to feel afraid.
“Who knows.”
This guy in front of her.
She could no longer see him as an ordinary elf.
**The land of immigration, Kaurelia.
After the success of the democratic revolution, it was a name given to the land ruled by elves.
High Elf purebloodism was still around, but it didn’t mean that there weren’t opportunities to prove oneself. It was at least far better than the Empire or other nations.
Because this place didn’t have a status system.
You got what you worked for.
It stood to reason. There were always opportunities even for immigrants.
However, having freedom and equality as a banner came with an equal price.
The capital of Kaurelia, ‘Märcherm’, was paying the price for having chosen democracy. The seeds of conflict never dried up.
“President, I think you should leave early today.”
The woman who had been working away with a pen frowned at her secretary’s words.
“Why?”
“There will be traffic control from eight o’clock, they say.”
“They’re protesting again?”
“Yes.”
The woman shook her head.
“How many months has it been already.”
She was now sick of it.
“It can’t be helped. They’re all demanding for the Golden-Eyed to be chased out.”
“And so we did the blood tests. They were all red, so what’s the problem?”
“Because they’re still resentful.”
After the ‘Steam Rain’ incident that took place in the Philiut Empire–
Hatred of Golden-Eyed had been growing by the day in Kaurelia ever since rumors started going that the Beast who had caused the incident was actually a Golden-Eyed.
“The controversy is still there. Some are saying that the blood test results were tampered with, so they want a thorough investigation to see if nothing had been faked.......”
“I’ve never heard that before. What fool is saying that?”
“The citizens.”
“Ah, damn it.”
The woman leaned on the desk on her elbows and swept a hand down her face. She saw black.
“Enough. Let’s leave.”
The woman picked up a few envelopes of papers and left the president’s office.
The trip to get downtown wasn’t smooth. Starting with the toll gate to leave the island, the terminal, square, and even the city hall–traffic was backed up everywhere.
“Hey you incompetent bastards! Why don’t you resign!”
“Oh god, this country is ruined, ruined!”
“Dear ancestors, Kaurelia’s thousand years of history that you built is about to be erased by the hands of the Beasts─!!”
The people lay down on the streets or threw objects. When the police shot water cannons, they retaliated with fireballs from the opposite side. And the barricades transmuted by the police were cut down instantly with Wind Cutter.
It was a complete disaster. The woman kept low and was desperately trying to get home.
And as she thought she was going to make it without incident for once–
Crack!
“......Ah.”
Something got on her brand new suit.
It was the egg of a harpy, a bird that lived in the Grand Forest.
“You witch! Why are you still working at the Academy! Resign already!”
“.......”
The woman hurriedly ran home. Thankfully, the protesters didn’t chase her this far thanks to the police.
“Oh merciful Goddess L’Quinneth, why do you allow such trials.”
When she came up to a mirror, she could see her haggard self.
Her silver hair once glossy like mercury became dull from hard work. Her pie eyes that used to shine with natural colors like opals had long since become lifeless.
“Huu.”
This was the President of Iliad Magic Academy...
...‘Cecil Renay’s current address. novelbuddy.cσ๓
“Those Demon Army bastards, should just send them all back to the stone age.......”
Cecil lay on her bed, gritting her teeth.
The reason why she was being flamed so much was all because of the Demon Army.
Because the Demon Army had attacked Iliad Academy where she was the president, resulting in many casualties. That was why they were demanding her retirement as the main person in charge of the school.
─ Were you really not present at the Academy at the time?
─ I was not, as I was away at the Elemental Society. It’s not a lie, I was really.......
─ Why did you not realize beforehand that the Demon Army was going to attack?
─ There were no signs whatsoever. Before leaving, I checked that the oceans were calm the night before.
─ How is it that you couldn’t even detect that with four Elite Elementals?
─ ......I’m sorry.
In the end, she was heavily criticized despite not even being a politician.
“It was called Leviathan, they said.”
The next time they meet, she’d make a coal steak out of it.
As she promised that, Cecil’s eyes turned a deep red, then returned to normal.
Anyway.
“Hmm.”
She had to finish the work she wasn’t able to do today.
There was a disruption in the academic calendar as Leviathan had killed talented professors.
“Why is no one applying when it’s a professor position...”
Tilette was also attacked by Beasts following Iliad. Now people would not only have to work hard but put their lives on the line to be a professor. Perhaps that was why they were having trouble recruiting competent new staff.
“I hope this applicant is decent....”
Cecil carefully opened the last application envelope.
“Asteya, Heisenberg.......”
An ordinary postdoc who specialized in Fire Magic theory at some national academy in the Empire.
“What’s this?”
It wasn’t even Tilette but just some mediocre academy. Well that lost her interest.
But in the envelope, there were other things besides the application form and cover letter. One of them was a thesis paper.
“Yes, a paper! As long as they can write a good one!”
It wasn’t the time to discriminate because they didn’t come from a good school.
Kaurelia was the land of opportunities. What did education matter? As long as they wrote good papers and were good at research!
Cecil began reading through the paper in half-anticipation, half-worry.
And some time later.
“......Whoa.”
Her eyes glowed emerald.
