Chapter 46: Fractured Loyalties

Whispers in the Dark

The night air was thick with tension as Mia moved through the outskirts of Haven, her boots crunching softly against the frost-covered ground. A Rift anomaly pulsed faintly in the distance, the shattered remnants of Riftfall Bastion still flickering like dying embers in the sky.

She wasn’t sure when the doubt had started creeping in. Maybe it was when she saw Nathaniel standing in the Rift, eyes glowing with knowledge the others refused to acknowledge. Maybe it was the way Orion looked at Ethan-like he was already a liability.

Or maybe... it had been building for a long time.

She just never wanted to admit it.

She reached the cliffside meeting point, the air warping unnaturally around a Rift tear-a wound in reality, pulsing faintly like a beating heart.

Then a figure stepped through.

A man cloaked in Rift energy, his form unstable, shifting between shapes, like he didn’t fully belong in this world. His face was hidden beneath a mask of obsidian metal, but his voice was smooth, knowing.

"You came."

Mia tightened her grip on her dagger. "You said you had answers. Give me one reason not to kill you where you stand."

The man laughed softly. "Oh, Mia... You already know the answer to that."

A sharp pain lanced through her skull-a sudden, violent surge of Rift energy that wasn’t hers. Images flooded her mind.

Ethan, alone in the darkness, consumed by his own power.

Selene, bleeding out, her golden light flickering and fading.

Orion’s cold eyes, a weapon raised-pointed at Ethan’s heart.

Mia staggered, gasping. "What the hell was that?"

The figure tilted his head. "A glimpse of what’s coming."

Mia’s heartbeat pounded in her ears. "I don’t believe you."

"You will."

And then the Rift whispered back.

She felt it then the pull. Not just power. Knowledge. Understanding. The truth the others were too afraid to see.

The man extended a hand. "Come with me. Learn what they won’t tell you."

Mia stared at his hand.

Her dagger trembled in her grip.

IThe Rift’s Toll

Back in Haven, Ethan sat in silence, his hands covered in darkness that wouldn’t fade.

The Rift’s influence had always been there, whispering at the edges

of his mind. But now, it was louder.

More insistent.

Selene sat across from him, her golden aura dim in the candlelight. "You haven’t slept."

Ethan exhaled, staring at his unstable shadows. "It’s getting worse."

Kieran paced near the window, arms crossed. "You think it’s because of Nathaniel?"

Ethan clenched his fists. "I don’t know."

But deep down... he did.

Nathaniel had spoken like he understood what was happening. He had stood in the Rift like it belonged to him.

And Ethan was terrified that he was becoming the same.

Then-Orion entered the room.

His face was unreadable, but his tone was ice-cold. "We have a problem."

He placed a holo-device on the table, a recorded conversation playing through the speakers.

Ethan’s heart stopped.

It was Mia’s voice.

"The Rift isn’t just chaos."

"It’s something more. And I need to know the truth."

Selene went still.

Kieran muttered, "No. No way."

Orion folded his arms. "She’s meeting someone. And I don’t think it’s for a friendly chat."

Ethan stood so fast his chair collapsed behind him.

"I’ll find her."

Orion’s hand hovered over his sidearm. "We find her together. If she’s turned-"

Ethan’s shadows flared violently. "She hasn’t."

Orion’s eyes narrowed. "You’re too emotional."

Selene’s voice was sharp. "She’s our teammate."

Orion exhaled slowly. "Then let’s pray you’re right."

The Chase Through the Rift

Ethan moved like a storm, shadows flickering around him as he followed Mia’s trail through the Rift-blighted forest.

Then they saw her.

Mia stood in the clearing, her dagger lowered, facing the cloaked figure. The Rift pulsed behind them, alive and waiting.

Ethan’s voice cut through the night. "ΜΙΑ!"

She spun around, eyes widening-then narrowing.

The cloaked figure smirked. "They don’t understand, do they?" He turned toward Mia. "You can still choose. Come with me-learn the truth."

Mia hesitated.

And that broke Ethan.

"You’re actually thinking about it?" His voice was raw with disbelief.

Mia’s jaw clenched. "I-I need to know what they’re hiding from us, Ethan."

Selene’s golden aura flared. "They’re not giving you knowledge, Mia. They’re pulling you into the Rift."

The cloaked figure’s smile deepened. "And what if the Rift isn’t your enemy?"

Then the ground shook.

More figures emerged from the shadows-Council enforcers, armed and waiting.

Orion’s voice crackled over comms. "It’s a trap! Get out of there!"

Ethan raised his blade.

Mia’s dagger trembled in her grip.

And then-chaos erupted.

---

Fractured Trust

The first blast of Rift energy tore through the clearing. Ethan and Selene moved as one, deflecting the attack, while Kieran’s gauntlets surged as he slammed into the nearest enforcer.

Mia stood frozen in the chaos.

The cloaked figure’s voice whispered, "You were never meant to fight for them."

And then-Mia made her choice.

She stepped backward-toward the Rift.

Ethan’s heart shattered.

"Mia, please."

Her hand trembled then steadied.

"I’m sorry."

The cloaked figure raised his hand, and Mia was ripped away-vanishing into the Rift.

The battlefield fell into silence.

Selene’s breath was ragged. "We lost her."

Kieran punched a tree so hard it splintered. "Dammit!"

Ethan stared at the empty space where Mia had been.

His shadows shuddered and curled inward, suffocating under his own grief.

And for the first time, Ethan wasn’t sure if there was anything left of her to bring back.

Ethan stood frozen, his breath ragged, staring at the space where Mia had vanished. The Rift’s whispers clawed at the edges of his mind, taunting him with the loss, with the failure. His chest ached, not from battle, but from something deeper, rawer—a wound that couldn’t be seen, only felt.

His knees buckled, and before he could stop himself, he fell to the ground, his hands trembling as they dug into the dirt where she had stood. "Mia..." his voice cracked, barely a whisper. "Why?"

His shoulders quaked under the weight of a truth he wasn’t ready to face. He had always believed they were unbreakable—that no matter what, they’d fight their way through. But belief meant nothing if the person on the other side stopped believing too. She was gone. And worse—she had chosen to leave.

A gentle hand rested on his shoulder. Selene.

She didn’t speak right away—just stood beside him, her golden aura steady, anchoring him, her touch warm against the cold sinking into his bones.

Ethan’s breath hitched, and when he finally spoke, it wasn’t anger or fury—it was pain. "I should have seen it. I should have stopped her." His voice broke, his throat tight with unshed tears. "She was my family, Selene... and I let her go."

Selene knelt beside him, her presence unwavering, and for a moment, she didn’t try to fix it. She just let him break.

Then, softly, she whispered, "We’ll get her back, Ethan. You’re not losing anyone else."

Ethan clenched his fists, shadows flickering weakly around him. He wanted to believe her—needed to. But deep down, a hollow fear gnawed at his soul.

What if Mia didn’t want to be saved?
