Chapter 54: The Riftborne King’s Ascent

Echoes of Power

The battlefield was silent.

Not the silence of peace—but the quiet that comes when something beyond comprehension has just happened.

Ethan stood amidst the destruction, his golden-shadow aura flickering around him, distorting the very fabric of reality. The aftermath of his power still vibrated in the air, warping space like the universe itself was struggling to understand what he had become.

Selene coughed, barely holding herself upright, her golden energy flickering weakly. Mia and Kieran were still catching their breath, staring at the massive crater where General Vaelan had once stood. The Omega-Class Suppression Squad had fled—not because they were ordered to, but because they had no other choice.

Ethan had won.

But no one could celebrate.

Because they all knew something had changed.

Orion, his arm still bleeding from the battle, finally spoke. "Ethan... what the hell are you now?"

Ethan glanced down at his hands. His fingers flexed, the shadows wrapped around them moving almost lazily—no longer just an extension of the Rift, but something more. Something greater.

He exhaled slowly. "I don’t know."

And for the first time in his life, that terrified him.

Back at Haven

The team returned to Haven under an unspoken tension. The war was far from over, but this battle had shifted the scales—Ethan wasn’t just a warrior anymore. He was something else.

As they entered the sanctuary, Selene finally let out a breath. "We need to talk."

Ethan leaned against the wall, shadows still faintly flickering around him. "About what?"

Selene gave him a pointed look. "About you."

Nefera crossed her arms. "Yeah, because that was NOT normal."

Kieran plopped onto the nearest couch, rubbing his temples. "Nope. Not even a little. We’ve seen some overpowered nonsense before, but this?" He gestured at Ethan. "This is ’rewrite-the-story’s-genre’ level of crazy."

Mia, still staring at Ethan, finally spoke. "What did you do?"

Ethan hesitated. Then, after a long silence, he admitted, "I... broke something."

Selene narrowed her eyes. "Broke what?"

Ethan’s voice was calm, but distant. "The limit."

Silence.

Nefera blinked. "Wait. Hold on. Are you saying—"

Ethan nodded. "Yeah. Whatever I was before... isn’t what I am now."

Kieran whistled. "Okay, so you’re officially in the ’no-longer-fair’ tier."

Orion, still standing at the edge of the room, arms crossed, finally exhaled. "And what does that mean for us?"

Ethan met his gaze. "...I don’t know yet."

And that was the problem.

The Power Name Debate

The conversation eventually shifted from concern to curiosity.

Mia, staring at Ethan’s still-glowing aura, tapped a finger against her dagger. "So... are we just calling it ’Ethan’s OP Transformation,’ or does this thing actually have a name?"

Kieran grinned. **"Ooh, yeah! If this was a game, you’d get a fancy transformation name. Something like ’Celestial Rift Ascendant’ or ’Godslayer Genesis Mode’.’"

Nefera smirked. "Oh, please. It’s obviously ’Abyssal Apex King’ or something equally ridiculous."

Ethan, looking entirely unimpressed, shrugged. "It’s just... me."

Mia raised a brow. "Nope. That’s lame. You don’t get a god-tier power-up and then just call it ’me.’ That’s not how this works."

Kieran snapped his fingers. "Oh! I got it! ’Oblivion Shadow Tyrant.’"

Nefera’s eyes lit up. "I actually like that."

Ethan sighed. "It’s not that deep—"

Mia grinned. "No, no, it is. In fact, we should probably change the title of this whole damn story. It’s not ’The Masked Virtuoso’ anymore. It’s—"

Kieran smirked. "’Oblivion Shadow Tyrant: The Novel’."

Ethan groaned. "Stop."

Nefera nodded. "I mean... it has a nice ring to it."

Ethan buried his face in his hands.

Mia crossed her arms, victorious. "You brought this on yourself, dude."

And just like that, the tension of the battle faded—if only for a moment.

The Missing Piece: Where Is Isolde?

The adrenaline from the battle was fading, but something felt wrong.

Mia was the first to say it. "Wait... where’s Isolde?"

Silence fell over the group.

Selene’s golden aura flickered as she scanned the battlefield, her mind racing. She had been so focused on Ethan, on Vaelan, on the Suppression Squad—when had Isolde disappeared?

Kieran muttered, "She was with us before the Rift collapsed, right?"

Nefera’s chains slithered around her arm. "Yeah, but after that? I didn’t see her."

The realization sank in like a stone.

Orion, still gripping his injuries, exhaled sharply. "Damn it. If she was caught in the collapse..."

No one wanted to finish that sentence.

Mia clenched her fists. "She’s alive." It wasn’t a question. It was a statement. A belief. A demand.

Selene nodded, forcing herself to stay calm. "She’s too smart to go down like that. If she’s missing, it’s not by accident."

Ethan, standing apart from the group, remained silent. His new power still lingered around him, distorting the air.

But his voice was steady. "We find her."

The team exchanged glances.

Orion crossed his arms. "Easier said than done. If she didn’t leave willingly, we have no idea who took her."

Mia’s voice was sharp. "We have one idea."

The Council.

The thought sent a ripple of unease through the group.

Selene inhaled slowly. "Alright. We don’t panic. We regroup, track her last known location, and figure out what we’re dealing with."

Nefera cracked her knuckles. "And when we do?"

Kieran grinned darkly. "We burn down anyone who got in our way."

Ethan didn’t smile.

His shadows pulsed once.

"We’re getting her back. No matter what."

Elsewhere... Isolde Awakens

Pain.

That was the first thing she felt.

Her mind was foggy, her limbs sluggish. She tried to move, but something held her down.

No, not something—bindings. Cold metal pressed against her wrists.

Her eyes fluttered open.

A dimly lit room. Metallic walls. A hum of unfamiliar energy in the air.

She wasn’t in Haven.

She wasn’t even near the battlefield.

A voice echoed from the darkness. "Finally awake, are we?"

Isolde stiffened.

She recognized that voice.

And it meant nothing good.

---

The Unseen Threat Looms

But not everyone was laughing.

Selene stood near the window, staring out at the ruined sky, golden light flickering in her palms.

She could still feel it.

Something had changed.

Not just in Ethan.

In the world itself.

Orion walked over, his voice quieter than before. "...You feel it too, don’t you?"

Selene nodded. "Yes. Something is shifting. Something... is coming."

Orion clenched his fists. "Then we don’t have time to celebrate."

Because deep in the Rift—something had awakened.

And it was watching Ethan.

Waiting.

Preparing.

For the true war to begin.
