Chapter 490: I’m His Daughter! (I)

Lazarus’s eyes burned with anger. "Then keep your faith," he said. "And stay away from my daughter."

Primrose could feel the smile on the blurry-faced man’s lips slowly fade after hearing Lazarus’s bold statement.

As a Cardinal, the people around him always obeyed his orders and never dared to speak to him rudely.

Maybe Lazarus was the first person who bravely declared that he didn’t believe in that damn faith. All he wanted was to take Primrose away, so she wouldn’t end up like his little sister.

Even though she was only a replacement for his little sister, Primrose could still feel his love for her, the pure love that a father gives to his daughter.

Wasn’t it cruelly ironic? 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦

Her biological father wanted her to suffer so she could become a "perfect" Saintess, while a strange man who had only known her for a few months desperately wanted to protect her and give her a comfortable life.

"Son, you have made the wrong decision," the Cardinal said. His voice gradually turned as cold as ice, and Primrose knew that he must be very angry.

"Oh, enough with that disgusting title," Lazarus said as he spat in the Cardinal’s direction. "I’m not even your son!"

Without waiting for any reply from the Cardinal, Lazarus suddenly ran toward the window and smashed through the glass without hesitation. He covered Primrose’s head with his hand, preventing the glass shards from hitting her.

"Don’t worry," he whispered as they landed outside. "I won’t give you to him."

He ran as fast as he could, choosing routes that weren’t crowded with holy soldiers. As a former bandit, he naturally had the skills to run and hide from people chasing him.

However, this time, it seemed difficult for him to escape, because the Cardinal had ordered hundreds of holy soldiers to guard the area around his house.

Every corner of Lazarus’s escape route was being watched by the holy soldiers, and no matter where he ran, someone was always there.

"Don’t let him take the Saintess away!" one of the soldiers behind him shouted. "He has insulted the Cardinal! The only way for him to pay for his sin is to die!"

Primrose’s eyes widened when she heard those words. She quickly looked toward Leofric, who was standing silently beside a house, watching as Lazarus carried her away.

He didn’t say anything, but the look on his face was enough to tell her that something terrible was about to happen.

No.

She didn’t want to imagine it.

She didn’t want to think about it.

She didn’t want it to become real.

Primrose wanted to scream at Lazarus. She wanted to tell him to leave her behind and run by himself, but she couldn’t.

This was only a fragment of her memories, and she wasn’t able to change the fate that had already happened.

Her heart pounded so hard that it felt like it was about to burst out of her chest. She could feel that this body was filled with overwhelming fear, whether because she didn’t want to fall back into the Cardinal’s hands, or because she was afraid something bad would happen to Lazarus.

"Aim at him!"

Two arrows shot through the air, and before Lazarus could dodge, one of them hit his right calf, causing him to fall to the ground.

Primrose was thrown from his arms. She quickly got up, even though her legs felt weak, and ran back toward him.

But Lazarus immediately pushed her away. "Run! Don’t look back! Just run!"

His words gave her strength in an instant. Without thinking, Primrose moved her legs and ran as fast as she could, just as Lazarus had told her to.

If she could escape from those monsters, she and Lazarus could live happily near the farm... right?

As long as Lazarus could also crawl away from that place, they could be together again, right?

"I’ve got the Saintess!"

Primrose’s eyes widened the moment someone grabbed the back of her clothes and lifted her off the ground.

"Let me go! Let me go!" she cried, struggling with all her strength as the holy soldier held her tightly.

All this time, whenever something bad happened to her, Primrose would only stay silent and accept it. She believed it was her fate because the Cardinal often told her that to become "perfect," she had to suffer first.

For eleven years, he had filled her mind with those words. He kept telling her that her only purpose in life was to prepare herself to serve the temple and the Gods.

For eleven years, she had never felt the warmth of someone’s arms, not until Lazarus took her away from that cage.

He gave her warmth.

He gave her safety.

With him, she could eat warm meals every day, she could sleep on a soft bed, and she could even choose the dresses she liked.

After tasting that kind of life, how could she ever go back to a cold, lonely room?

"FATHER!" Primrose screamed with all her strength.

She knew her body was moving on its own, but honestly, even her mind wanted to scream for Lazarus.

She kicked, bit, scratched, and hit the holy soldier who was holding her, but he didn’t care at all. To him, her struggle was no stronger than a kitten’s weak bite.

"Your Holiness, I have brought your daughter," the soldier said respectfully as he lowered his head.

They had returned to the front of Lazarus’s house, and the other soldiers had even dragged Lazarus back there.

"FATHER! FATHER!" Primrose cried even louder when she saw blood running down his injured leg.

Her chest felt like it was being torn apart because seeing Lazarus in pain was like having countless knives stab into her heart.

"I’m here," the Cardinal said calmly as he took her from the soldier. "You don’t need to shout, my daughter."

Primrose kicked his leg and screamed, "NO! I’m not your daughter!"

She pointed at Lazarus with shaking fingers. "I’m his daughter!"
