Chapter 54: I Am Here

He continued to walk.

Far ahead, he could see a massive forest—huge trees loomed up, blocking all light.

The farther he moved away from the castle, the more he could feel Wreth’s presence.

His senses started to come back.

It wasn’t that strong—

probably because of the lack of light.

He could tell Liz was probably somewhere deep in the dark.

Somewhere the sunlight wasn’t reaching.

A place where her shadows couldn’t fully appear.

Still, he felt slightly relieved.

He knew Liz was alive and okay—thanks to the ring.

But he couldn’t sense Caius.

He knew for sure he wasn’t dead.

If he was, Envy would have returned to him.

If he had to guess... Caius was probably locked up in a place like he was.

Still, he couldn’t focus on that now.

He needed to find Liz.

He started to run toward the forest.

The forest was dark.

Quiet.

There were no sounds. No movement. Nothing.

Just silence. Stillness.

And once again—

he couldn’t feel his shadows.

His senses started to fade.

Not a single bit of light touched the ground.

He was getting tired of this weakness.

"I need to solve this issue once I get back," he muttered, as he kicked the nearest tree so hard it shook down to the roots.

Right then, he felt the sunlight hitting him for a slight moment.

He stopped and looked up at the massive trees above him.

The forest was so thick, sunlight couldn’t reach the ground—

but it did hit the branches above.

He bent his knees and leapt upward.

He jumped as high as he could, soaring into the branches.

Up there, he could feel the light—

and his shadow appeared.

Faint, but it was there.

He started leaping from one tree to another, heading in Liz’s direction.

He needed light to track her.

All his shadows were connected.

He couldn’t shadow travel there due to the lack of light—

but he could sense it.

Without it, he was completely lost.

Blind.

Whenever the light vanished, he’d cut the branches with Shadowbind.

He clenched his jaw and continued to move.

Leaping from tree to tree.

With every step, he felt closer.

After traveling for a while, the light slowly disappeared.

He was stuck.

He couldn’t feel her presence.

He didn’t know where to go.

He stopped moving.

He realized—

that could only mean one thing:

The sun had started to set.

"This is bad..." he muttered.

He started to panic.

He tried cutting more branches to make space for the light to slip through—

but it was no use.

Everything above him was too thick.

No light could pass through now.

He had no other options.

He had to wait for the moon.

He waited...

Minutes felt like hours.

Panicking.

Random thoughts poured into his mind.

He couldn’t sit still.

He climbed all the way up—

to the very top of the trees.

There—

the moonlight shone bright.

It hit him fully.

And in that moment, he got his senses back.

Liz was close.

He could feel Wreth’s presence again.

He stood at the top of the tree, the moonlight covering him.

And behind him...

his shadow stretched long and clear.

A full shadow.

He smiled.

Then leapt from one tree to the other.

And every time he landed—

his shadow hit the branch first.

It stretched like rubber—then snapped back,

pushing him upward to the next tree.

It was like bouncing on shadows.

Each leap faster than the last.

As he continued to move through the endless forest,

he suddenly felt a tingling from his ring.

He moved faster.

He knew the undead soldier he placed with her would help—

but Wreth wouldn’t be able to come out.

Not while she was stuck in this forest.

He didn’t know what to do.

He could tell she was slowly moving deeper into the forest.

He was slowly losing her direction—

but he kept going.

Until he heard explosions.

He changed direction and followed the sound.

Ahead, he saw fire burning through the trees.

The forest was on fire.

Which meant—light.

Which meant—shadows.

That meant it had fully manifested.

Her shadow.

Slowly, he could hear Wreth’s voice.

"Boss, I tried to reach you but couldn’t.

She’s surrounded. Do you want me to kill them all?" he asked.

"No. Stay put. It’s better if you stay hidden," Kael answered.

"Is she okay?" he added.

"Yes, boss. Someone came and helped her," Wreth said.

"Who? Other demigods?" Kael asked.

"No... it was a lady with pointy ears," he replied.

"Okay. I’m on my way," Kael said, as he dashed toward the fire.

The ring on his finger pulsed wildly.

He could feel it—her heart was racing.

They were exhausted from running.

Fighting something they didn’t understand.

Ten mages had surrounded them.

Liz pulled out an arrow, aimed at the sky, and screamed with everything she had—

"KAEELLLLLLLLLLL!"

The arrow shot upward, glowing like a second sun.

Light burst through the trees.

And then—

in an instant—

Kael appeared above them.

The moonlight shone behind him, casting a long shadow through the smoke.

He hovered midair for a second—

calm, deadly, eyes burning red.

They all looked up.

Frozen.

He took one breath and roared—

"I WILL KILL YOU ALL!"

His voice cracked through the air like thunder.

His anger radiated—pure, sharp, electric.

As he dropped, he muttered—

"Shadowbind. Second form: Mage Slayer."

In the dark sky,

his face was blank.

Only the glow of his eyes cut through the night.

Then—

midair, he drew his blade.

Black, shadowy energy hissed off the edge like it was alive.

In one violent motion, Kael crashed into the ground.

The impact split the ground beneath him.

He muttered—

"Shadowbind. Second form: Mage Slayer."

He swung his sword in a full vertical arc—

and from it, a sand-blast of black energy exploded outward—

ripping in every direction like a shockwave.

Trees split in half.

Boulders shattered.

The mages were torn clean through before they could react.

Silence.

Their bodies hit the ground in pieces.

No screams. No resistance.

Just clean, brutal silence.

Kael stood in the center of the wreckage.

He turned toward Liz and smiled—soft, breathless.

"Told ya... I won’t let anything happen to you."

Before he could finish—

Liz launched into him, arms wrapping tight around his neck—

and kissed him.

"I’m sorry I was late," he whispered.

"Shut up," she muttered, as she kissed him again.
