Chapter 27: Chapter 27: Reprimand

In the back hall of the side wing, Gu Yifeng sat in the chair, quietly savoring the tea in his hand. Gu Yixuan, seated below, dared not move recklessly. After entering, he greeted his older brother with just a nod, and after taking his seat, he hadn’t spoken a word.

The more silent it was, the more uncertain Gu Yixuan felt.

Since childhood, Gu Yixuan had feared this older brother. Though only a few years older, he exuded an indescribable authority, a battlefield-like bloodthirstiness. Whenever he made a mistake, his brother wouldn’t scold him but would have him kneeling in the ancestral hall, even in the cold winter without allowing charcoal to be lit. Because of this, his legs would ache when the weather turned cold.

"What exactly happened last night?" Gu Yifeng suddenly asked, startling Gu Yixuan, who quickly sat upright.

He wilted, "Brother, truly nothing happened. Sister Ru came out and merely called little sister once, and little sister got scared."

Gu Yixuan met his brother’s gaze, his voice growing smaller. Gu Yifeng’s gaze sharpened, making Gu Yixuan feel increasingly anxious and uncertain, not knowing if he should continue. Although he was telling the truth, under his brother’s scrutiny, he felt guilty.

"Why not continue?" Gu Yifeng lightly furrowed his brow, "You are about to establish yourself and your family, yet your actions are so unstable. Will you still have mother worrying after you start a family?"

Gu Yixuan hesitated.

It wasn’t that he didn’t want to speak, but he had already said everything he knew. He didn’t know what else to say.

Gu Yifeng’s brow furrowed ever tighter. He knew their mother had spoiled his younger brother, but he had always watched coldly. His brother might have some frivolous habits, but his heart was not bad. Now it seemed he had underestimated things, thinking that as long as he supported the mansion, it was enough, but this let his brother misunderstand depth and weight.

"After the Mid-Autumn Festival, focus on your studies in the mansion and prepare for next year’s Spring Examination," Gu Yifeng decided not to discuss further, "Postponing the marriage will be good. I’ll go to the Duke Mansion, and we’ll delay it to after next year’s Autumn Examination."

Gu Yixuan put on a bitter face, yet dared not argue, merely muttering an acknowledgment before retreating.

After Gu Yixuan left, Gu Yifeng couldn’t help but sigh, "Have you found out what happened last night?"

Li Si respectfully stepped forward to report, "Master, the servant found out that it was the young lady from the Duke Mansion who sent a note early on to see the Second Young Master. The Madam had the Second Young Master accompany her in writing Buddhist Scriptures, and only by evening did they go out with the young lady. It was just in the front hall that they met, and the young lady got scared."

But simply seeing Kong Tianru, how could she be frightened?

Gu Yifeng did not doubt Li Si’s ability, which was why he had followed him for so many years.

Thus, it seemed Gu Yixuan hadn’t lied, but merely being frightened by a meeting was still hard to fathom.

Gu Yifeng furrowed his brow, "Have someone pay more attention to the young lady’s movements."

Li Jing agreed, then said, "Master, last night, the servants from General Xu’s Mansion, when returning, were met by mountain bandits, resulting in four guards and two maids dead, only one old woman surviving."

"What boldness, even at a place like Pure Path Temple! Is Xu Kuan still on the mountain?" Gu Yifeng stood up, striding outward.

Today, he wore a blue-green robe, lacking his usual sharpness, instead exuding a Taoist aura.

"Last night, it was Mrs. Xu Sr. wanting to return to the mansion, just meeting with the young lady, who persuaded her to stay, thereby avoiding disaster." Li Si reported as he followed.

Gu Yifeng paused, then strode towards the front hall. Li Si, seeing his master silent, said no more, merely following behind.
